I am reading The Friend by Teresa Driscoll and enjoying it. Never read anything by this author before.

For each of the last few years I' ve read a children's book at Xmas time. It feels like a comforting and festive thing to do. So I just finished Bookworm by Lucy Mangan hoping for inspiration. I enjoyed the parts on the history of children's book publishing but TBH I was disappointed in her selection; most of the books she mentioned are so well known already. And she did read a lot of dross didn't she! (So did I, but I don't expect other people to be interested!) I'm still looking for ideas for an amazing, warm, comforting children's book for Xmas day. In the meantime I'm filling the gap with a kid's fantasy book ''Stranger Days on Peculiar Hill' by Grimly Darkwood. Yes, the author is a friend of mine, but his previous book ' The Shop on Peculiar Hill' was bonkers and funny in a genuinely charming way so I have reasonably high hopes.

And suggestions for my Xmas day read would be greatly appreciated. My dream book would be a cross between 'Little Katia' and 'Charlotte Sometimes'.

I'm reading Under the Skin by Michael Faber, very good.

Also reading Storm Keeper's Island by Catherine Doyle to DDs at night, love it. Just finished Inkspell, after Inkheart, and this was brilliant, too. Looking forward to Inkdeath next.

David Copperfield is my favourite Dickens, but some recommended Our Mutual Friend on another thread so I'm hoping it's good.

I’m halfway through the 5th book in The Game of Thrones. I have enjoyed the first 4 but finding this one heavy going, but I’ll persevere.

All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr is in my bag for reading on the bus to work
The Mirror World of Melody Black by Gavin Extence is on kindle for reading while waiting for DC2 to go to work

Reading 2 at the moment.

Underground by Murakami - about the attack on the underground in Tokyo by a cult - some gas (Sarin). He interviews the people that took part in it and some of the victims. Amazingly no one actually hated the group. Of course the emergency services where overwhelmed (as were several hospitals), who would have expected that in Japan??!

Also The good Terrorist by Doris Lessing - Quite entertaining. The Alice character in particular needs a big slap (but at least she cleaned the squat up, organised electricity and got the loos working again., They all needed smacking I think!!!

Recently finished The Last Policeman. There's a huge asteroid on a collision course with earth. The guy mentioned is one of the last policeman on his patch. A lot of people have committed suicide. He comes across one that he feels is murder. Move other policemen have given up but he is determined. It sounds very black but I did enjoy it. Only trouble is, my water bottle leaked over it. I finished the book but then could not hand it over to my colleague!

The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead.
It was brilliant, and made me gasp, and sob, wonderful book, I've already bought The Underground Railroad.
Highly recommended.

Was reading The Pharnacist's Wife by Vanessa Tait, which was given to me. Interesting subject matter but dealt with in an utterly meh way. Skimmed the last 50 odd pages.

Bridge of Clay by the author of The Book Thief. Completely different. Jumps all over the place - full of humour but loads of emotions. It seems a little strange at the beginning but then you are drawn in. I am only a few pages before the end and have been captivated by it.

A Murder at the Vicarage by Agatha Christie, I am working on reading them in order, in between other things.

I just read The Binding by Bridget Collins , and I loved that.

Winter by Ali Smith, very good so far.

Have given up on Binding- maybe I should give it another go.
