I have nothing in I store I want :(
I like crime/thrillers, like psychological thrillers, but fairly tame/domestic
Sophie Hannah, Elizabeth George etc
Like medical thrillers, michel palmer, obin cook
Like apocalyptically stuff
Like sci if to an extent - can cope with a zombie-creating virus, don't like anything that involves lumpy foreheads or pointy ears
Not keen on chick lit, tho I'm sure some of the stuff I read (liane moira ty) overlaps. Hate romance. Hate highbrow thrillers set in snowy Russian landscapes where I have to really concentrate to remember who is who. Hate gritty stuff, Madura Keller, that woman who digs up bones

Have you tried Denise Mina...crime drama set in Scotland. Or I've enjoyed Brady Udall's two books The Miracle Life of Edgar Mint & The Lonely Polygamist. Have also enjoyed Under the Jewelled Sky by Alison McQueen.

I think you would like Susan Hill's Simon Serrailler series.There are 8 books so should keep you going for a bit.

or oryx and crake by Margaret atwood or the children of men by pd james if you've not read them but if you're into apocalyptic stuff i imagine you have. have you tried jo nesbo? or barbara vine (aka ruth rendall but a bit different) . will watch thread with interest as our taste in books sounds quite similar

How about 'Into the darkest corner' by Elizabeth Haynes. I've recently finished it after hearing about it through mojomums book club (on fb, great for book recommendations) I used to go to bed excited to read it, though it's quite a harrowing story. The hairs on the back of my neck would stand up reading it x

I really like apocalyptic fiction and recommend this thread.

I have also just finished 'Amity and Sorrow' which I rather liked (about a polygamist family escaping their abusive father)

The Unit by N. Holmqvist is page-turner ish and a great translation.

I read Elizabeth is Missing earlier this year and it was quite compelling - a mystery with a twist.

I can't wait to get lots of books for Christmas - just need to find some time to read them

Have you read American Psycho by Brett Easton Ellis?
Did he ever kill anyone?

Just couldn't get into Jo Nesbo.
Like Mo Hayder and Val McDermid.

Never got into mo Hyder, are they gritty or is that just my impression

I thought the first two were good. Birdman and The Treatment I think, but I'd have to go check. Some of the later ones were a bit weird though. Not the same calibre of writer an Val McDermid.

I second Denise Mina, especially her Garnethill trilogy.

I also recommend The Guilty One by Lisa Ballantyne - sort of crime fiction but the crime story interwoven with the troubled childhood of the lawyer on the case. I found it really gripping.

I really liked Jean M. Auel's books, particularly The Valley of Horses and The Mammoth Hunters, I thought they were beautiful books.

Would you be interested in non-gory crime thrillers that take place in different places?

Jason Goodwin writes historical crime/detective fiction about Ottoman-era Istanbul. A dead body in the palace, the detective is a eunuch etc. They are pretty good. Start with The Janissary Tree.

Eliot Pattison writes great crime thrillers that take place in modern Tibet under Chinese occupation. A Chinese detective who gets on the wrong side of Chinese authorities gets chucked into a gulag in Tibet, makes friends among Tibetan inmates, and solves a murder. Great insight into the clashing Chinese/Western and Tibetan/Spiritual viewpoints. Start with Skull Mantra.

Barbara Nadel writes about crimes in contemporary Istanbul. She has a pretty good local info and grasp on social issues.

I thought the rapture by Liz Jensen was better than the uninvited. For other post apocalyptic stuff, how about the leftovers by tom perotta or the testament of Jessie lamb by Jane rogers

I read the book first. Far better than the film, and a slightly different story. The film is to all intent and purposes about a serial killer, whereas the book is actually a biopic of an obsessive compulsive, and you don't actually know if he is a serial killer, or just someone imagining he is a serial killer. It is more of an examination of his insanity.

I really couldn't get into any of Brett Easton Ellis' other books, but Americal Psycho is one of those American Classics in the traditional sense.

I read The Good Girl recently - that's an enjoyable, page-turning psychological thriller.

Am also half way through Daughter and am enjoying that too.
