This is how a slim person eats

I have never been overweight, apart from post-baby. Would it be helpful for me to tell you how I stay slim?

Disclaimer: I consider myself very fortunate to have been raised by a mother who a) gave us a love of healthy food and being active and b) never had food issues herself, so I have never learned to be an emotional eater.

I really think emotional eating is a huge issue for a lot of my friends. And I don't claim to have the answer to overcome this. I do know, however, that it's a lot harder to "binge" on healthy food. And I believe the food "industry" manufactures food that is addictive, precisely so that you'll buy more.

My self-imposed rules, because contrary to what people around me believe, I'm not "effortlessly" slim. I work at it.

  • nothing is banned, because that would create cravings (I love cake, but I eat it 2-3 times a week not every day)
  • food is neither reward nor punishment
  • vegetables at every meal
  • I don't count calories but I do count fruit & veg - aim for 7 a day
  • eat for health not weight - look at the nutritional value and eat mostly whole foods
  • carbs are fine but 90% of the time they are brown not white
  • drink mainly water or green tea, apart from one coffee & milk a day and approx two glasses of wine a week
  • eat mainly dark chocolate (70%), soon milk chocolate will taste too sweet by comparison
  • walk everywhere if time permits
  • plan ahead so time does permit!
  • do a form of exercise you love, 2-3 times a week (I am not naturally sporty but enjoy swimming and cycling)
  • snacks are to tide you over till a mealtime, not fill you up (nuts, fruit, yoghurt)
  • don't starve yourself, if you're hungry between meals have a healthy snack
  • no low-fat or diet anything, it is usually full of sugar or nasties
  • cook from scratch every day - not necessarily fancy, jacket potato and tuna is fine, with some green veg on the side! if you cook from scratch then there will be no secret addictive ingredients to make you binge eat
  • lean protein with every meal
  • don't buy biscuits or crisps (if you're desperate, bake some, it'll probably not be worth the effort)
  • don't buy sweets for your children, that way they are not there to tempt you (and your DCs don't need them)
  • eat seasonally
  • meal plan all the time
  • eat at roughly the same time every day
  • eat dinner earlier rather than later (for me 7pm)
  • if you need something upstairs, get it now, all activity is good (I potter a lot)

bloody hell.

What a smug, self-satisfied post. Do you REALLY tink that's all we need to know to have a "lightbulb" moment and miraculously lose weight?

Meh. I'm not over weight and never have been and I don't eat like that. Actually right now I'm tucking into pizza and chips.

I also drink more than two glasses of wine on a Friday.

I also binge eat.

I have a friend who eats much better than me but really struggles with her weight

But you go ahead thinking you're thin because your perfect and not just because that's the way you are.

And if I need something from upstairs, I send the child.

I'm a slim person too and I don't eat like that nor would I suggest that if everyone ate like me they would be slim too because people are different. Most of them aren't so smug luckily.

There there dear, feel better for that bit of smuggery?

FWIW I eat almost exactly as you do, with a bit less cake. I have a healthy BMI and do hard cardio multiple times a week. I am not and have never been slim. There's a bit more to it than that.

I'm slim and do none of that.

Actually, I may do, I just got bored reading that condescending list.

Not every slim person eats the way you do: it's oversimplifying to imply yours is The Way (unless you have a book/article to sell, perchance?)

I wouldn't know whether your list is useful. I have an arse you could park a small car on.

But I enjoy food, cooking and life. And along the way fat birds like me boost the egos of people like you. So I'm of use just the way I am: why would I want to be slim?

Thanks anyway!

I'm fat and I lurve the pizza, and the wine, and the crisps and I send the kids upstairs to get stuff that I need. Chocolate anyone? Seriously though, you don't understand why people overeat. It's not always a choice to trough through unhealthy stuff, for some it may be emotional eating, some may have mental health problems/eating disorder and also for some, it can be cheaper to eat unhealthily, as sad as that may be. There's also people like me who love food and aren't actually that bothered about being overweight.

I'm madlizzy, I'm 45 and I'm fat and loving life.

I'm slim and I eat my own body weight in cheese and chocolate. Good genes...

Oh my, what a thread title Hmm
I'm slim, don't eat like that and don't exercise like that. I think it may be genetic...but poverty and stress have certainly made me lose a bit of weight.
By this kind of logic this means that better off, happier people must all be overweight?
What a heap of steaming toss. Is it wine o'clock yet?, got some as a Xmas present today...
