if they last quite a while is it worth paying out for a good one?

well if you shell out £150 for a tripp trapp it's meant to last till they are grown up.

otherwise it's hard to see anything wrong with the £12 Ikea one

Ours is on its third child. Each child used it until about 2yo. We've had to replace the seat cushion, but other than that it's still excellent. Chicco, I think.

Yes it probably is as they get used over and over everyday and then the next child comes along and they are brought out once again and become part of the furniture for another year or so!!! (Well that's what happened in this house).

The best bit of advice I could offer though is look for one that is easy to clean. I bought a Mamas and Papas once which was fine and has lasted the course but it does have quite a few nooks and crannies which are a bugger to clean bits of food out of.

My 4 year old is still using his tripp trapp, definitely worth the money. He's much more comfortable than in an adult sized chair and being too low or having to kneel. Friends sometimes have a separate child sized table and chairs for this age, but it's not very sociable at family mealtimes!

Def worth getting one with removable tray too so as soon as they're ready they can sit up to the table properly. Also a tray that pushes in nice and tight to your child so they don't drop mountains of food all down themselves. We paid £99 for a Chicco Polly when ds was 4 months. It saw him thru and is now being used by dd.

we have tripp trapp chairs for all three of our boys, they are 8, 5 and 2yrs and they use them everday, they are easy to clean and totally adjustable, plus they actually look nice

you can get them for less than £150 too

We have a Tripp Trapp. Got it when DD was 5 months old. Now used as a chair and DD is 5y7m. I use it at the computer sometimes too Still looks in great condition. Been worth every penny.

We bought a Chicco Polly, now been confined to the loft after 6 months we have just bought a tripp trapp and would highly recommend it. More comfortable, DD likes sitting up right, very easy to clean. Tripp trapp only a bit more expensive than the Chicco Polly or the Mamas and Papas. The need for trays is very overrated.

I have a chicco mamma, 8 years old, has been used by 5 children so far, my two plus various mindees, and still going great guns. Three height levels plus lie-back positions too, perfect for when they fall asleep in their lunch. Aw

Scrubs up easily too, and the straps detach completely, and the whole cover comes off.

Can't remember how much we spent, perhaps 100 quid? but has definitely been a trouper.

i have a 12 quid ikea one, it's lasted to baby no.2 so far who is now 14 months, and i take it outside and hose it down when it gets particularly caked in food. I really can't see the point of spending alot.

I haven't used a tripp trapp, but it is worth paying extra for something that has fewer places for food to hide, and for one that is covered with plastic coated cotton rather than pvc.

Not sure if the offer is still on but boots had a chicco Polly highchair on offer- usually £100 we got it for £50. Really well padded and looks really sturdy.

Please don't get a chicco polly, all the food goes into the cushions, its a nightmare to clean, never used the recline position and actually not upright enough for my DD. I've got a big house and it still looks huge and very unattractive. I'm so glad I don't use it anymore.

I started a thread a few months ago about Tripp Trapps, and mine rocks.

Main thing is it's easy to clean - the previous one was a fabric one, and stank as all the food go stuck in the corners.

Would never have a fabric one again, unless the cushions are removable and you can chuck them in the washing machine.

We bought the £12 Ikea one and it's great, the whole thing is washable (having no fabric on it) and it fits under the table so baby can sit with the family and it's not huge and take up loads of space!

Another vote for Tripp Trapps, only trouble is you end up having to buy one for each chid

Tripp Trapp, no doubts. Have 2yo & nearly 7yo, both use theirs every day. Sometimes baby uses it to stand on foot rest to do washing up and its very stable. Totally adjustable for every age. Great buys, can't wait to see them leave home with them

i vote ikea, the tripp trapp is pretty but it's unbelievably expensive. you can just buy a long-legged chair for £20 out of ikea when they no longer need the highchair.

I agree about the removable tray. However (since we didn't get one with a removable tray, just a removable insert) we graduated onto a booster seat from Mothercare when DS was 14 months, and tbh I'm very happy with it and DS loves it. So I think I would go with a fairly cheap highchair and move on to a booster seat - much smaller to take around with you as well.

I have the ikea one. It has lasted 8 years, is easy to clean, practical, comfy.

My mum has it and hers has seen a procession of grandchildren

It depends if you need something more "house and garden"

Personally I didn't care what it looked like, it was functional, easy to clean... and it worked

I just got a strap on plastic booster seat with a tray, both ds's went in it from 6mo, ds2 is still in it (21mo) pulled upto the table now. Easy to clean, easy to throw in the car if we were going to the inlaws, adjustable, v cheap.

Another vote for the IKEA 'antelop' one - cheap and dead easy to clean. DD1 has graduated onto the IKEA high stool chair thing, wood, looks nice and not expensive either.

AitchTwoOh · 14/11/2007 23:59

oh yes, the booster seats are great too. dd has one at grandma's.
