How would I even know where to start, the free weights bit of the gym intimates me Grin

Maybe book a session with one of the gym trainers to show you the 3 basic lifts with a bar - deadlift, weighted squats, chest press. You might have to pay, or they may do it as part of the gym services. But it's worth it - a good trainer can check your form, and set out a reasonable training programme for you.
