The litter tray

3 of our cats have died after being treated with flea tablets

We gave our two beautiful BSH blue girls a flea tablet prescribed by the vet after their annual checkup and vaccination.

Two hours later, E died even though she had been given a clean bill of health from the vet. Vet said that she had died from heart failure or poisoning but couldn’t be sure without an expensive autopsy.

Two weeks later, A died. As she had been playing with a mouse shortly before she died, we assumed she’d been accidentally poisoned. The vet said that it was definitely not the flea tablet.

We bought the girls to keep as house cats but eventually let them outside. They both died before their third birthday.

We bought two BSH cream boys and have kept them as house cats. Last week, we again gave them both the same flea tablets as we have previously given the girls as prescribed by the vet as we are away on holiday. They do not go outdoors so we only flea them when they are going to the cattery when we go away.

M died within three hours of taking the tablet on Friday, 2nd August. His death was exactly the same as E’s. Sick, tongue hanging out of his mouth, pupils dilated and then he was dead.

The vet rang the pharmaceutical company who have offered to pay for an autopsy and cremation after being told that we have lost three fur babies after giving them tablets to prevent fleas. They paid for our remaining cat to be seen by the vet and given blood tests. We don’t have the results back yet.

The death of our beautiful boy has totally ruined our holiday and we are terrified that our remaining boy will die.

Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this after fleeing their fur babies? The vet recommended this brand as the BSH breed have such dense fur. So worried about our boy and gutted that we couldn’t keep our beautiful babies alive even though we took such great care of them.

All 3 died after taking the same tablet, after being given a clean bill of health from the vet and whilst so young. None of them reached anywhere near three years old.

The girls were sisters, the boys were brothers and both were bought from different breeders. Any thoughts or advice please

Oh no that's terrible, they were so beautiful. Hope the other boy is ok and you find out why this happened to them. Flowers

We really can’t until we know the outcome of the autopsy and blood tests.

We asked the veterinary nurse if this reaction from the pharmaceutical company was normal and she said no.

What’s the name of the tablet OP?
Unfortunately I have seen this happen - not from flea tablets as such, but have seen multiple cats from households poisoned by the same thing and die at the same time as each other.
So sorry for your losses Flowers

This is just so awful. Please share the name of the product - I will avoid it regardless of the autopsy of your poor cat. I’m so sorry Flowers

I always use a spot on flea treatment/deterrent, easier than giving them tablets. Once a month, stops them getting fleas.

I'm glad the makers of this flea tablet are going to pay for an autopsy. It cannot be just a coincidence that three of your babies died not long after taking it. I bet other cat owners in different parts of the country have lost their pets too and no one knows why as they are spread out. However you have had three die, they have to sit up and take notice.

I'm so sorry, it's terribly hard losing a pet and it seems so unfair when they are young.

Please come back and let us know what happens.

How awful. They should stop giving out the tablets til they know what's caused this, surely.

Chewable products that protect dogs and cats against fleas can cause neurological problems such as stumbling or seizures, and pet owners need more warning, the Food and Drug Administration said Thursday.

The FDAissued an alertto owners and veterinarians and said it was requiring clearer labels on the products.

The flea pills and chews all contain a pesticide called isoxazoline, the FDA said. They include products sold under the brand names Bravecto, Nexgard and Simparica.

"Another product in this class, Credelio, recently received FDA approval. These products are approved for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations, and the treatment and control of tick infestations," the FDA said in a statement.

"Isoxazoline products have been associated with neurologic adverse reactions, including muscle tremors, ataxia and seizures in some dogs and cats," the FDA added. Ataxia is a lack of muscle control and can cause animals to stumble or twitch.

(Was it any of the tablets mentioned here?)

Can I ask if the tablets begin with a C and end in an O ?

None of the tablets mentioned here. Scary that we are poisoning our beloved pets, thinking we are doing our very best for them.

Actually you cannot be sued for libel for making factual statements.
Eg Our cats were treated with x brand of flea treatment. They died on x and y dates. There are current investigations ongoing.

You are not saying “x brand killed our cats” so you’d be saying absolutely nothing that could get you into any legal bother at all.

Scare mongering anyone?

Sorry to sound cold, OP, but why you can't reveal the name of a potentially lethal medicine to a bunch of (now) terrified cat-owners on a completely anonymous forum is beyond me.

Why mention it in the first place if you're going to be elusive?

Not the same but my cat max had his jab which triggered skin cancer, anyone having jabs on their animals should always insist on the jabs being done in limbs rather that the scruff. They had to take a 3cm margin around the cancer and that included the tips of his spine, he cost £16,000 in vet bills and only lived another 15 months before the cancer returned and he was terminal. Miss him every day! The rescue centre we got him from said they advise jabs are done in limbs as a limb can be removed to stop the spread of cancer if the jab causes it. He was only 6!

Hope you other fur baby gets the all clear xx

One of our cats died after a prescribed spot on flea treatment. She had ataxia and seizures but we didn't make the connection.

We have swapped the brand now but I still worry when I have to treat the others.
