Vet says my boy kitten is not ready to be neutered

But I'm not so sure! He's a rescue so not sure of his exact age but he's around 5.5 months, still has baby teeth. I have two older female cats and he's recently started 'sniffing' them Hmm Problem is, I'm going away 21-31st and my friend is looking after them - shall I get him done before I go? I don't want him being a sex pest but the vet said he'll be OK until after Christmas (based on his teeth).

It's recommended to get it done at 4 months. I had to go to a different vet to get my boys done at 4 months as my vet said 6 months too

are the female cats "done" ?

www.cats.org.uk/what-we-do/neutering/enr/menu-early-neutering use this to find a vet that neuters at 4 months

That's weird, about teeth, doubt my vet looked at teeth.
You could phone around to find another vet & get 2nd opinion.

I was advised to leave mine as long as possible, better for their growth apparently. Mine boys were both about 11 months when they were ‘done’, yes they were kept in until then

I don't think that's true for cats, more likely info for dogs. Also they shouldn't be out if not neutered.

See a different vet. Most will now do at 4 months. My vet definitely would.

If you had got him from a rescue they would have done him as soon as he weighed a kilo! My girls got done at 9 weeks on that basis - resuce wouldn't rehome any cat or kitten that wasn't neutered. My vet was v impressed by this as it's microsurgery esp on the girls.

Bone development argument doesn't apply to cats and really really important not to be letting your boy cat out and about if he can be inseminating the local cat community. There are enough unwanted kittens in the world already Sad

Is it because his nuts havent descended/arent big enough though?

Report
forgottenusername · 11/12/2017 17:28

Mine was taken by the rescue when he first arrived there and his nuts went back up! they left it a week and took him back and they did the same again :) so in the end we rehomed him and his nuts :)

They said he was about 9 months when he came to us (based on the teeth I think). About 6 months later he started fighting loads with neighbouring cats, so we took him to be done then. Waiting didn't do him any harm, he'll be 22 in February :)

My vet did it by weight rather than age, he was 3.5 months but knocking 2 kilos the lardarse Grin and it was much easier doing him than his sister who was tiny. So we had him done and then her a few months later.

We have a 5.5kg tomcat, does this mean he is was neutered late in life? Gosh I wonder how many kittens he has fathered..

I think neuter ASAP!

Thank you for all your replies, so much to consider! My female cats are done. He had his second lot of jags last week, the vet thoroughly examined him (ears, temperature, eyes etc) but showed me his tiny teeth Confused and said it was too early to neuter him. This kitten was very homely and timid until Saturday when he suddenly decided he wanted to go out on the tiles Hmm. I think next week will be time to say goodbye to the nutsack.

I don't live in the uk, we have terrible problems here keeping the feral cat population under control Sad

forgotten your boy is adorable, 22? Bless him 😾

We've rehomed 14 week siblings, boy and girl. They were both done at the rescue centre as they won't rehome until they've been done.

Not so much poor SisterCat as brazen, buzzy who threw herself at poor bewildered BrotherCat and then when he mounted her head, attacked him for being so stupid!

I am having to wait with my boy- only one testicle has so far decided to appear so vet wants to hold off as long as possible in the hope the other appears before he has to go looking for it. I can’t wait to have him done

ShovellerDuck · 12/12/2017 20:29

I waited until my boys were six months old. We had no problems and kept them in until afterwards. It would have been different if they’d been boy and girl. I don’t like the idea of operating on little baby kittens or puppies. They’re not going to be reproducing at four months old and shouldn’t be let out that young anyway.

Little boy's been done today and recovered well. Not sure how long the hormones take to get out of his system but he doesn't seem to following the girlcats around so much and isn't desperate to get outside anymore.

I'd actually prefer to keep him as a house kitty as I lost my last two male cats to FIV and FIP.
