Where to start...

They're described as part dog, part monkey, wearing a cat suit.

Affable natures, described as "bomb proof". They will make friends with your other pets (whether existing pet likes it or not), and are probably the most ideal cat to have if you have DCs.

Very athletic, need a lot of stimulation, so interactive toys like these are good. They like to be the centre of attention, and will bring you gifts, like muddy sticks from the garden. They like to play fetch, and might drop their current favourite toy on your face at 5am. He's not destructive, loves running up his scratching post, then running down headfirst like a squirrel.

Mine doesn't miaow, just a funny trilling, crooning sound, and when he's excited, he'll do a little riverdance of joy, accompanied by "errr, erngYA! noises. Likes to ride around on your shoulders, and very sweet and gentle, and he's a little comedian, with a big personality.

They're not a "sitting on the sofa looking pretty sort of cat, they like to be involved in everything you're doing, apart from when they're asleep, from which a bomb going off wouldn't wake them.

Very trusting, a lot of breeders stipulate not to let them outside. I let Little Monsieur out, as he only has access to the gardens at the back of our terraced house. However, by his own choice, he doesn't leave the courtyard.

I wake up every morning with him taking up most of the bed. And if I'm sad, he'll gently reach up and tap me on the shoulder with his paw.

Take time to research your breeder well. Little Monsieur was very well socialised when he came to live with us. If you live in the South East I can recommend my breeder, just pm me.

Their large ears are waxier than other breeds, so need a little wipe inside with a Refresh'r wipe or H2O babywipe once a week. Often vets who aren't familiar with the breed confuse that with ear-mites.

Here's some photographs of my little pixie alien cat. First pic was before his curls had grown in properly, hence the semi-plucked chicken look. Second one, is as he is now. He really is an absolute joy.

Second what the PP said. Extremely friendly, characterful and entertaining cats. Ours is quite vocal with a loud Siamese like voice, apart from when he is trying to catch birds when he coos and chirrups to them which has me in stitches.

Lots of Rexes actively like water (ours likes to shower with us). Ours goes out but comes when called.

Ours also loves to touch our faces with a paw and collects soft toys from the children's rooms and carries them around.

I think they are really nice cats to have, we have another moggie cat, but she treats us with appropriate disdain, comes in for food then clears off again, our Rex couldn't bear not to have all the attention!

My DR likes eating mango, potato peel and broccoli. He also likes hand cream and cosmetics. As a kitten he would climb on my head and try to catch my mascara wand.

I have three and they are completely nuts. Middle-aged now, so calmer much of the time, but still go tearing round the house at least once a day. Still very much into climbing (ladders, clothes horses, trellis, anything you care to leave in their way).

Playing fetch, carrying around soft toys like kittens, catching toys and howling over them in triumph, shredding tissue paper, flapping cardboard flaps on boxes, the list of nonsense goes on and on.

Highly entertaining, very affectionate, excellent company pets.

Goodo that's exactly what I was hoping you clever lot would say...I already have one very in your face moggy ,one don't you dare touch me unless I ask then I'm going to bite you anyway moggy and a small dog who thinks he's a cat...a dr should fit in OK then?? Won't be allowed out but I have a cat run directly off house so will get outside time.. I have had Siamese before years and years ago

Mine also chirrups at the birds, Absinthe He also chatters his teeth and makes a nickering sound at them, like a baby goat.

They're very dexterous, they have long toes, which they can use almost like little hands, give them a drinking straw to play with, and you'll see what I mean.

OP, I also have a "don't you dare touch me unless I ask then I'm going to bite you anyway moggy". Little Monsieur won him over, but bitey cat has taken to bullying him a bit lately, Little Monsieur never retaliates, just walks off and leaves MCat (the biter) to it.

Another thing, they're often bald when you adopt them at 13 weeks, so you might need to get him a little jumper when he's outside in his run of an evening.

And an interesting fact - Steven Spielberg had a Devon as a child, and that inspired the look of the alien in ET. Attached is a pic of Little Monsieur doing his impersonation of ET. Grin

I was thinking of knitting him/her some jumpers once I know what colour.. I won't be getting him/her at 13weeks- breeder will be keeping until neutered etc so a bit older..very hard to find litters where I am..fingers crossed

Sounds like a responsible breeder.

Mine let Little M go at 13 weeks, but would only sign the pedigre (GCCF?) papers over to me until I emailed proof he'd been neutered.

And I had 2 long interviews with her, (I didn't mind, because I got to snuggle little Monsieur, who promptly fell asleep on me).

Have they been born yet? I picked mine out from a photograph, taken with his litter-mates when he was about 10 days old. He's the one boldly staring into the camera, with Dorito ears. I didn't even consider the rest of the litter (who were all gorgeous). I didn't care what colour he was, it was that look.

Here's another one of him at 4 weeks. Full of attitude.

Why are you doing this to me? I want a Devon Rex now! I'm sure Harry would love a little brother...

Report
RubbishMantra · 22/06/2016 10:36

They really are lovely little beings Pink.

A Devon will befriend Harry no matter what it takes. They just sort of assume that everybody will love them, but not in an arrogant way.

BUT, if you don't want nice bits and bobs broken, stick them down with Blu-Tak. Little M's "job" is to wander about, paw outstretched, searching for objects that he deems would look better on the floor. Especially glasses filled with liquid. I decided to take a bottle of water instead of a glass to bed with me, after being rudely awakened several times by getting a soaking, as he pushed the glass in my direction. At 5am.

TBF, he is still going through his teenage dickhead years.

And their antics make you laff at least once a day, even if you're down in the dumps. (which I have been lately). He's my little sunbeam. despite being a dickhead

they look ADORABLE!!

I am juggling between something siamesey or sphynxy, but these look like fun!

it'll be a while though, current catfaces are all very hale and hearty and dh is convinced three cats is just too OTT.

mapline · 22/06/2016 11:08

Lovely, sociable, vocal, active. Though, due to this, I wouldn't say they make great only cats, especially if nobody is around much during the day. You won't need to be knitting jumpers, they get a good coat of fur quite quickly, and are far from Sphynx-type 'bald'

Sphynx cats have the similar appealing personality (we have both) and they have the lovely peach-type down fuzz fur

Report
PinkSparklyPussyCat · 22/06/2016 12:43

Oh God, I want one! I really don't think DH will agree to it though and my main worry is that Harry would feel pushed out - when we tried to take in William he chased Harry out and he just left. It's probably my fault for telling him he's a sandal wearing, tree hugging peace cat!

Harry is obviously going to live forever but, on he off chance something goes wrong, I'll be thinking about my Devon Rex then.

RubbishMantra · 22/06/2016 12:44

You're right mapline, they do thrive on company.

IME, they go through a baldy stage from about 3 to 6 months. Mine was born with a good, curly coat, but lost it through the kitten moult. He now has a lovely sheepy, curly coat on most of his body, It's only his inside legs arms and neck that are peach fuzz. His tum is also peach fuzzy, but he has some curls in that area that would make Burt Reynolds envious! Also very curly around his (non existent) man bits. Like a Sporran. Grin

I was very sad when I sent a photograph of both my beautiful boys, to be the face of Aldi's cat food. I was sure one of them would win, but MCat being a black and white mog, and Little M looking a bit... unusual, they didn't get a look in.

Pink, MCat was vile to Little M at first, so much so that I thought I may have to return him to the breeder. But he just kept on his merry way, and eventually had MCat under his spell. They're just too friendly to be ignored.

There's been a spate of bullying from MCat recently, but there has been a massive life change for us all (you know), so the dynamics have changed. They no longer have a "person" each.

To use Cozie's phrase, they're very clubbable cats.

I may have to look into this further and try and convince DH. I tried to tell him that 2 can live as cheaply as 1 but he's not having it for some reason...

I was gutted whe Harry didn't get a look in when I entered him for our local cutest pet competition. I've entered him into the Royal Canin rescue cat of the year competition but they probably won't appreciate him!

I have a Thai/ Korat :)
Her name is Mavis and she loves people especially children. She is a ninja cat leaping and twirling everywhere then flopping to sleep. It took her a few days to settle with my 2BSH but they are the best of friends now.

One of mine was a finalist in the RC rescue cat of year last year..haven't got around to entering this year, was on my list of things to do but I haven't been great at all for a couple of months and paperwork just sits looking at min in disgust..

The litter have been born and I have been in touch with breeder but it's not guaranteed I will be accepted for one of this litter.. Very responsible breeder who looks for the right homes rather than first come etc.. Of course I know I'm the right home but am just quietly waiting- if it's meant to be then it will sort of thing ..

I'm in a lot so no probs with company mad house is cat/kitten proofed/wrecked so no worries there either..plus I have the cat run now for outside time which makes my current two very happy and me too

All my current animals are rescues and I have a bit of quilt about 'buying' a cat rather than rescuing another one but I would rather like to have one who we have chosen and who's going to be the one who hopefully stays with us for many years ( the others have health issues and I was asked to take them on for however long they are here) ....I also have my worries about having three cats and a dog but we have plenty of love to give and friends/family to help out if I need to go away ( unlikely)

Pictures are lovely .....

Of course, you really meant to say 'you can attend the breeder's home to allow a kitten to choose you if they want to'? Grin

Yay! I chose my little monkey-cat from a photograph taken from when he was a week to 10 days old. I was allowed to visit him when he was 5 weeks, and his breeder kept me up to date with photographs.

When I met him, he put his tiny paws on my shoulders and really looked at me, as one sentient being to another. Then snuggled for a kip under my chin.

You're not mad... but the waiting to bring your curly baby home could make you feel like you're going mad with impatience. He yelled all the way home, strolled out of his carrier, had a munch, played with his Flying Frenzy for 2 hours, then slept between DH and me, under the covers, head on pillow.

They're very energetic, and you know how some cats are just "meh" when you bring them a new toy? Devons are the complete opposite. Also be prepared for announcements from doing a poo to have finished her dinner, possibly also expressed through dance. Grin

Rubbish ..funny that's more or less exactly how the breeder described them..Got to have a cuddle with some of her cats today..soo soft but solid if you know what I mean.. One of my rescues 'talks' a lot and expects an answer so I'm used to that..toy wise I have a basket in living room full of dog and cat toys..I rotate them so hopefully that will be good... I have just had a Catio made so outdoor time will be safe and easily accessible..

Cosie toes..yes of course you are right...I will let the kitten pick me and the kids... It's a bit of a journey away so am hoping I can visits an adventure....

Now the name game begins...female quirky name preferably beginning with a M is needed...

RubbishMantra your Devon is beautiful! I wanted to get a Devon but DH refused point blank, so we went for Burmese instead. They are also really sociable.

Interesting that Stephen Spielberg had one.

One of the few upsides to the poo that has been thrown my way the last few months is that I don't have to worry about what anyone else thinks..I can do what I like! Was at a show last week to see Devons and listening to the comments from other people there- you either think they are fab or you think they are the most horrible looking cat- kids mad me stood and laughed listening to the comments.. As did the breeder... ( but they were still all jealous when we got cuddles and they didn't! )
