Noise Complaint about my dog

I have just received a complaint from the council about my dog barking late at night and early in the morning. I am fairly certain it is from someone whose garden backs on to mine and who has recently moved in.

The dog goes out first thing at 6am - I am making tea at that point so although she barks to be let in, it will be less than a minute. I generally go to bed at 10.30/11 midweek and again I am pottering around in the kitchen so the dog will bark a few times and be let back in - very occasionally it will be later or earlier.

I don't consider the level of barking to be unreasonable or the above times to be particularly late or early, but would be interested to know what is considered excessive noise.

It would annoy me if I was woken at 6 every morning and my kids / me woken at 10.30-11. Can't you make sure you're not pottering so can let him in before he barks?

I love dogs although don’t have one due to being out at work all day.

This barking would annoy me. Not sure I would do anything but I would inwardly seethe. I think it is a bit late at night and too early in the morning (although I get up at 5.45 during the week).

Train him to scratch the door not bark ? I would throw the dogs out first thing before six then set up there breakfast they literally did there business and returned for food no barking at all and same routine at night

It’s totally avoidable though, huh? Regardless of whether you or “we” think it’s reasonable, you’ve got a complaint & it’s easy to avoid (monitor dog in garden & let her in quicker) so just change your behaviour a little rather than getting cross about it?

Surely it's easily solved by waiting for your dog so he doesn't need to bark?

Used to have a neighbour whose dog barked at about those times, it really pissed me off. Didnt mind the odd bark between 7.30am and 7.30pm though but at 6am and 10.30pm, thats just inconsiderate! Sorry.

Sorry but having been on your neighbours end of this I think you need to make this stop, barking at unsociable hours is unacceptable, my neighbours dog used to wake us at 5/6am every morning and wake my kids at night constantly, I honestly nearly had a nervous breakdown about it, it was all I could think about.
What may not seem like a big deal to you may be affecting someone else so id deal with it as quickly as possible if I were you.
FWIW I reported my neighbours dog and thank goodness she decided to move out.

Can’t you just go out with your dog? It would annoy me if I was next door.

I get up at 7. I'd be annoyed by being woken at 6.

I have a dog and I think you're being really inconsiderate. That must be so annoying for your neighbours at those times daily.

You need to watch/stay with your dog and let him/her in before there's any need to bark.

It was a bit OTT to put in an official complaint but it should be easy to stop your dog from barking so it would be best to do that.

Being woken up at 6am every morning by a barking dog would really annoy me. I'm assuming it's 7 days a week too so no repite at all.
You need to find a way for him to come in much more quietly.

Thing is, you're up and about when your dog is barking, so you see it as reasonable, but your neighbour is probably asleep, and therefore regards it as really unreasonable. Put yourself in their shoes. Barking is incredibly loud in the early/late hours because of the lack of other noise. We lived next door to three really noisy dogs and it totally ruined our ability to enjoy our home.

Our dog has his last walk/toilet trip about 8pm and then goes out around 8am. So maybe try changing the times, or taking him out on the lead and standing with him so he doesn’t need to bark to get back in.

Why can’t you either leave the door open or stand at the door and watch the dog?

I could set the clock by a previous neighbour’s dog barking and it disturbed my sleep.

Longwalk - good idea - I will leave the back door ajar.

Just plain selfish, our neighbours dog barks repeatedly when they let it out. You want the dog, it's not fair to inflict it's barking on your neighbours!! It's massively disturbing and you are selfish for allowing it to upset people living nearby!

Put a baby gate on and leave your door open. What you're doing is really selfish, because not everyone likes getting up that early. I used to work twilights, finishing at midnight and would be seriously pissed if if I was your neighbour. Take responsibility for your dog.

If your dog woke me daily by barking at 6am, I turn a fucking ice cold hose on it.

I have 2 dogs myself and find would find this extremely annoying especially if they were to wake my dd/ds up. Leave the door open or take it out on a lead for a walk

1 bark at 6am is fucking annoying!!!! It's enough to wake someone. Up to a minute is unbelievably inconsiderate. I know - I have a neighbour who lets her dogs out at that time and shuts them out so they have to bark to be let back in.

We let our dogs out much later and go out with them or leave the door open. Had it really never occurred to you to do that?

Dog barking at 6am and you seriously think the complaint isn't aimed at you? Leave the door open.
