I do like this programme but wish they didnt use families who spend £150/200 so easy to cut down and save money

It's always people buying brand names and ready meals etc so cooking from scratch Obv saves

And use families who spend £50/70 a week and really could use the extra £10/15 they may save

And love it when they try something and say it's horrible and it's their original brand 😂😂😂😂

I was 😮 at the diabetic boy eating all the high fat, high salt branded meat snacks!

I thought last week was funny, that the daughter was happy with very cheap meals, like pasta with tinned tomato and tomato soup. Sure she was happy with the basics soup swap but it felt a bit unfair she had to give up the heinz when she wasn't the one eating all the snacks or take-aways.

Despite it being so predictable, I still find myself watching it every week and shouting the same things at the tv; "don't buy brands", "make your own food", "don't fall for super market fake offers"! I love how the couple are always shocked to meet gregg and whatshisname watching them in the supermarket - I feel like shouting "they have been doing that for the last 4 series - surely you know that they are going to be watching you!"

And yes, they should do some episodes featuring people who are already trying to be thrifty

I'm always in awe how much shite some people eat - kids drinking Coke/sugary cereals etc etc etc

Report
JustDanceAddict · 14/06/2017 21:57

Love it, but so stating the bleeding obvious!! And the crap they eat: 2 bottles of Diet Coke, choc spread and choc cereal every day for the kids. I'd rather see them swap for healthier choices such as ready break, wwetabix (the supermarket versions if necessary).

Also in shock about how much shit people feed their kids, things I see as treats these kids are having all day every day it's crazy! I liked the idea of the homemade doner kebab but was surprised that the kids were used to the take away version as a regular dinner, my father in law owns a Turkish restaurant/kebab shop and my children have never had a doner kebab in their life, I agree that they should focus on families that already try to be frugal, as I feel some families could really benefit from this

Do the people appearing on this type of programme receive a fee? Most of the couples seem reasonably intelligent so would surely know what they have to do to save money. As someone else said, this programme has been going for 4 series, they must have watched it!!

How could the parents of the diabetic boy let him eat all that crap? They just come across as so lazy.

Couldn't believe the woman on last night's programme. She didn't want to waste time cutting open the bread rolls.Shock

I watched it last night in all it's predictable awfulness. The parents came across as snobs i.e. gotta have the brands. (Did they just go on t.v. to brag about their spending habits ? There's people who have got their grocery spend down to a fine art due to budget constraints.)

When it came to cooking a meal from fresh food that was a bit tired even Gregg remarked, 'you are obviously able to do this'.

The more the programme went on the more the mum and dad looked like sheepish school kids.

I think after 4 series it should be less predictable, I would like to see a more variety of families and their spending habits, they are always saying the average family spends x amount ect , well show us an average family then!

^what 91 said.

Also, I'd love them to be realistic about getting stuff from 5 different supermarkets. It's great that veg soup is 19p at Asda (or whatever) but if they don't have that shop nearby they're hardly going to traipse there every week for the bloody soup.

My main issue with it is that the replacements are from loads of different supermarkets.
You would waste as much as you had saved in fuel or bus fares.

I think it's ridiculous that the swaps come from multiple supermarkets (I think some were Morrisson's and some were Aldi last night) - who has time to drive to multiple supermarkets ??(I know it is really to make their point). Also, a stir fry isn't the same as an actual Chinese takeaway- just don't eat takeaway every week!!! Have one for a special treat. The whole point I think is to get you shouting at the TV. Wouldn't be as interesting if the shop was cut down from £80pw to £73.50!

I love this show - yeah some of it is obvious, but most of us wouldn't necessarily automatically swap to a budget brand AND wouldn't believe it could taste the same/better.

I for one will be trying Lidl humous after last night's episode!

Ditto annoying they go to different shops

They should try the value /cheaper brands in the shop they shop at

Seemed insane tho that they spend so much money that they could save £160 a week 🙀🙀🙀

Which is double what the average family spends

And £80 a week on takeaways. We may have a CHINESE Friday night and be £25

Doesn't make sense they go to different shops. I usually shop online and top up on essentials, no way do I have time to faff about. If all replacements were from Tesco where they shopped, it would make more sense.

Is it a BBC thing, that they can't only feature one supermarket (though through the series they could choose one a week)?

Report
Embekkisson1 · 15/06/2017 20:25

The parents with the diabetic boy were not as clever as they made out. It was common sense just to give the boy simple healthy foods than swamp him with expensive snacks and treat food then have to add up aload of sums to keep he's diabetes under control .

I think as it's the BBC they presumably can't favour or endorse one supermarket or brand over others. Also I don't think it's meant to be literally "You must buy these Asda fish fingers and this Tesco squash and these Sainsbury's beans", more "You couldn't tell that these weren't the branded version so next time you're doing your usual shop try the store's own brand and see what you think"

Report
EssentialHummus · 16/06/2017 09:31

I'd personally like, "The family have a Tesco, Coop and Asda within x miles of home, so we've looked at prices in these stores."

Signing in. I find myself rolling my eyes at this show for all the reasons already mentioned in the thread. But I watch it nonetheless :o
