My niece has been fealing out of sorts for the last few weeks (since she was on automn half term at her fathers)she is out of power, has pain in her legs, more speficifally her tighs, her hips, and now also lower back. She was so unwell teacher called my sister to come pick her up today.

She has been to the gp, he took some bloodtests last week, but they are not done yet, and he could only suggest cancer in the legs!

Has anyone else experienced any thing similar with their teenagers?

Glandular fever? The lethargy and general aches and pains sound similar. Does she have have any other symptoms?

I had growing pains, but not so bad I was exhausted on the bed, and had to come home from a shopping trip because my body ached so much. I think doctor established it wasnt that.

She hasnt had a cold, or sore throat or anything lately.

She eats a lot of red meat, only thing she is not too keen on is bread and milk.

Sounds like a urinary or kidney infection - I had this and displayed those exact symptoms, how is she passing urine?

I am going to call my sister and ask about passing urine.

Has she started her periods yet. I had all sorts of funny pains around my stomach area when that happened , as well as massive loss of energy in my legs. (I also got a type of dizziness/morning sickness thing).

I eat a lot of red meat, but when I started menstruating I was laid out flat on the sofa on-off for a couple of weeks before they found out that my iron levels had plummeted. She'll have those teenagy hormones swilling about doing crazy things at the moment,

Cancer of the legs sounds as batty a starting point as the doctor who told my SIL (with an air of curious trivia) that spots and a fever (or something like that) can indicate the onset of Leukemia.

yeah - SIL ended up in tears at the out of hours doc two days later. Tthe out of hours doc said this GP was a 'professor' type who had a reputation for saying inappropriate things. It was a normal toddler winter virus!

I've been debating posting this, but I thought you should have another viewpoint. I'm sure that what is wrong with your DN is nothing so serious, and you've been given lots of other highly plausible suggestions, but, seeing as the doctor mentioned it...

It could be "cancer of the legs" aka bone cancer. I say this because my DB had similar symptoms for about 6 months, and was tested for various things (hernia, old rugby injury, arthritis), and finally was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, which is a primary bone cancer that mostly affects teenagers (he in fact was 23 at the time).

The good thing in your DN's case is that they have already thought of this possibility, so will do all necessary tests, and so if (pray god not) it is cancer they can start the treatment asap.

Her uncle had cancer in the legs, bone cancer as you say. My mum has bone marrow cancer, but I dont thin there is any direct link

No, afaik there is so far no genetically proven link with bone cancer.

I wish your DN all the best, and hope she gets a swift diagnosis / solution to her symptoms.

Can I ask what other than blood tests has the GP done/arranged after dropping the it could be cancer bombshell? When does your DN get her blood test back? I'm only asking as I can not believe a GP would just drop this bombshell and then have a young girl waiting for news I'd have thought if he really thought it was cancer an urgent referal would be in order and if not he should have done some tests and then dropped this bombshell! If this was my DD I'd be devestated just waiting for confirmation either way! I really hope it all turns out well for your DN.

I spoke to my sister who said the gp had then ruled out cancer on the basis of alcaline levels in her blood moments after he had suggested cancer. My sister said she had been surprised to find that a standard blood test of the kind you normally find haemaglobin would also tell him this. The doctor had not referred her to any other doctor/specialist.

She has made an appointment at another clinic on thursday with a paedeatric doctor, as she was not satisfied that the first doctor was thorough enough.

I am beginning to think she is due her period. At least I am hoping.

Have they ruled out a kidney infection? Kidney infection cause all the symptoms you mention and it doesn't always hurt when weeing.
