How do I unlock my daughters iPhone

littlepinkfizz · 19/09/2016 12:23

My 15 year old has lied re where she stayed overnight. She will not tell us where she was and remains defiant. If I could see her phone messages I'd be more at ease. She won't tell me her password to unlock it. Can it be u locked?

Probably not. My iPhone is set to lose all data if the incorrect pin is entered more than ten times so be careful.

Oh no! If she was older I would not abuse her privacy. But as her patent I need to know what she has been doing. Would a phone shop be able to unlock the password?

You don't need to know where she was to reprimand her?

You're simply acknowledging something she can control over you.

No they wouldn't and nor should they. Even leaving aside the issue of if you should be breaking into your 15year olds phone how would the shop know you hadn't stolen it?

The only person who can unlock that phone is your daughter

You don't need proof

If you honestly believe she broke your rules and refuses to prove she didn't, punish her

Now she knows your dander is up wouldn't she be likely to delete any messages that she doesn't want you to see anyway?

Even the fbi struggled to unlock iPhones in suspected terrorist cases. Me thinks you'll need another way to deal with this issue.

Confiscate her phone. Then you don't need to worry about who she's messaging.

pinkieandperkie · 19/09/2016 13:51

Even if they did unlock it you would then probably have to put in her Apple ID.

SO she lied about where she was overnight? take the phone away from her until she tells you where she was and you confirm it.

Or remove the SIM.

I find my teen is almost surgicallly attached to her phone and taking it away from her is the most effective sanction I have. You dont have to break in - just remove the phone.

If she absolutely must have a phone, then put the sim in an old brick phone without internet.

I predict you will find out where she was very quickly. Be prepared not to like the answer.

There are various pieces of software that will recover erased data and messages from an iPhone so if she won't give you it just threaten to take it and keep trying to guess until it erases the phone

My guess is she will either cave and let you look if she thinks the phone is about to be erased or delete the messages that would tell you what you need to know

If she deletes the messages and hands phone over then run the recovery software to get them back

If not guess enough to delete phone and then run recovery software after it is deleted to see what it finds

Most stuff isn't deleted more just a reference of what it is and where it is is deleted the info stays there until the memory is full and it has to be overwritten to reuse the space

"Run recovery software" Confused. She's never going to tell you anything if you start doing things like that. I get that there's obviously issues for you to have the need to know where she was, and to be angered by her lying, but going in all heavy handed will just push her away. Obviously I don't know how serious these issues are, so you may be justified - who knows.

I'm just glad I was a teenager in the 80s when there was no recovery software, GPS tracking or Find My iPhone or similar!

Confiscate her phone and ground her if you're sure she has lied to you. Going through her phone isn't possible unless she lets you.

My post was a bit garbled - obviously she's 15 so you need to know where she is overnight, whether there are issues or not.

If you know for sure she lied then all you can do is stop her doing it again. Take the phone off her and stop sleepovers.

I'm also bloody glad we didn't have mobiles when I was a teen so there wasn't proof of my shenanigans !

You can't get the history but you can wipe it - the threat might just be enough for her to cave and tell you the truth.

minatiae · 19/09/2016 23:56

If you enter the wrong pin consecutively ten times it wipes the phone completely. It won't tell you what you want to know but will annoy her enough to not refuse to give you the pin next time.

(I wouldn't really do it Grin)

Thanks for all the comments! Just got back on wifi this evening. She handed phone over as soon as she came home however I took it into Apple Store and turns out the home button is broken so that needs sorting anyway. She is suitably remorseful but remains grounded... without phone

If you absolutely needed to access what was on the phone (putting aside moral/ethical issues and the potential to damage the relationship) then you could sneak up on her and snatch it out of her hand when she's distracted using it.

Take it away, rather than trying to snoop into it. I have two 15 year old DDs and that's what I'd do I think.

At 15 knowing where they are overnight is a massive thing, diff when she's older.

Report
Believeitornot · 05/10/2016 10:44

Don't snoop!

That's a road to disaster.

You know she lied, you don't need proof. Just tell her what your concerns are calmly.

To be honest, your daughter may be angried if you unlock her phone. You are suggested to talk with her patiently. If you think it's necessary to unlock and remove the passcode on screen, you can also try Joyoshare iPasscode Unlocker. It's good at bypassing screen locks.
