Military or russian influenced with lots of embroidery/applique (sp) type stuff.

Look in any of the fashion mags out this month - they are in full winter fashion mode. There are some seriously scary "folksy" things out there, so prepare for a Ukrainian peasant type look.

Yes, either Anna Karenina stylee or the Marc Jacobs military rip-offs (which are nice but everyone will be wearing them)

I suppose a true Ukranian peasant would be lucky to have a blanket to wrap around them. I have seen some black coats with rather bright flowery embroidery in magazines. I usually react by saying no way would I be seen dead in that, and by the time winter is almost over I suddenly feel all left out and have to have one.

i have a couple of trusty single breasted pea coats- one in subtle grey tweed and one deep red.
I bought them three years ago and they seem to look good every winter
I reckon an expensive, well fitting classic style is best- rather than buying into the latest fashion which will look dated mid winter when every other person is wearing one.

I have a vintage Burberry navy peacoat with gold buttons that I thought was too German U boat captain but now think it might be dug out of the cupboard

Aww...stoppit..where do you shop?
I know a few charity shops are more savvy these days and employ people who know and then ebay off more valuable items..good for them , but not so much for bargain hunters!
same with vintage shops, these days they are very overpriced..i remeber getting some unworn 70's shelleys shoes about 7 years ago that are just fab for £3..no chance of that again!
