Suit on a toddler - naff??

With a family wedding coming up in the next couple of weeks, I'm debating whether or not to buy ds (18 months, but wearing age 2 - 3 years, and running around everywhere) his first suit. Just told my sister about lovely suit I saw, and it took her a good 5 minutes to stop laughing...

Am I pfb? Classless? Just plain stupid? If so (well, judging from dsis's reaction, probably) - what should I dress him in? It's bil's wedding, so ds will prob be on a lot of family pics!

I've got a week and a half, please help.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit now, but these were the suits I considered:
black - prob too dark anyway

(I cringe to think of hideous waistcoat and tie combo I bought my nephew when I was about 20. Hadn't a clue!)

Monsoon thing just about passes muster but best bet is a pair of cords or chinos, nice shirt and a plain jumper in winter and sometihng in linen for summer.

I'm going to go against the grian here but at the last wedding i went to there was a toddler in a suit and he looked DARLING! I think it's dead cute and cords etc. are a bit boring by comparison.

Suits on toddlers are naff, particularly if used with a tie or even worse, a bow.

Oh wow, thanks for all the quick replies! You must be seriously worried about the harm I was about to inflict on dear unsuspecting ds.

Hmm, ok, well, since at least PortBlack and FlameSparrow like suits so far, I'll try and console myself that I was almost there, just go a bit carried away with the tie bit...

Soooo, plan of action - to be safe and going by majority opinion - no suit then? Will go off to search for linen trousers etc then.

Oh I think a suit would be cute!

I've just got home from my nephew's christening and although not a suit, there was a toddler in a shirt and waistcoat with jeans. He looked gorgeous!

When my sister got married, my older nephew was 2 and he wore exactly the same as my bil. He looked so sweet!

I'd say the M&P item would hit just the right note.

I personally think it's a bit silly to pay money for something a child is going to want to take off the second they can. Which is why for my wedding, I didn't even go for a jacket in the hire suit for my pageboy who was 7, because it would be uncomroftable. He wore a shirt and waistcoat and cravat and smart trousers.

We got a suit for ds as we had two weddings to go to this summer. He/we got loads of compliments on how sweet/smart he looked, (pic on profile) Think it cost a total of £26 (from the net) inc postage for a 5 piece suit so not expensive.

Maybe it's a marmite thing toddlers in suits. I like marmite!

I should probably concede that there is a practical problem too - if it is actually very hot, a suit won't work anyway, would it?!

I'm having problems moving away from suit idea! I go all mushy - also think they look so, I don't know, dapper! Will promptly close the pages in question and try for something halfway then.

It's weird, I'm not a silly designer-clothes-for-rapidly-growing-kids-kind-of-nutcase, but go all mushy at suits. On men too (dh, not random bankers in the street of course). Oi.

two little lads at my cousins wedding had the cutes outfits on... collarless shirts and waistcoats with scarves tied a bit like this (excuse the pic... finding an image of what i wanted proved harder than i thought and this lad was the closest i could find... obviously the little lad didn't have the fag or drink )

they looked brilliant though and much more comfortable than most of the other kids whilst more formal too iyswim?

i had ds2 in linen pants and a kadin shirt from monsoon and he looked fab too

I agree that is silly to pay such prices for something he is hardly going to use. For DS christening I used something that emulated that look but got the pieces form here and there and at the end I spent less than £20 with the jumper being the only expensive option.

If it's in Southafrica (and summer) is even easier, some beige linen shorts/trousers, a good long sleeved white shirt with brown leather sandals.

Since it's a very strong argument either way, maybe I should play it safe, as it's going to be first time in a year I see almost everyone, and I will feel terrible if half of them think I'm being stupid and feeling sorry for poor ds! Will pick another battle to fight and show I have some backbone.

I'm nervous at the though of having to tie a cravat, but guess the "day tie" not too bad here. Hmm, he'd prob just pull it out anyway! Sounds lovely though, will keep in mind in my new search.

If going for summary linen, I'm hoping to find it in a sale somewhere. Another night of browsing coming up.

I wouldn't hedge your bets on it being too hot yet - depending on where in SA it is end of September might still not be that warm.

Oh that's really nice, PinkTulips. Only thing with that - I'm wondering if I go that formal, it's almost the same as suit, not? (Which I love, clearly, but think I'd rather go for the safe option and hopefully still show off my darling ds.)

Alwayslooking - true, true. It's in Pretoria, so at least chances of nice weather is good, but yes, change of seasons and all that. I'll go for something I could layer, and will take casual clothes for once he's covered in mud during the reception.
