Socks that DON’T get holes in?!

Eachpeachtree · 30/03/2020 09:33

I’ve thrown out about five pairs in the last week...I love bamboo socks but haven’t found ones that last yet. I’m a SAHM so walking around in my socks all day, maybe this makes them wear out quicker?!
If anyone knows of the holy grail (socks that LAST), please please tell me where they are?!

I'd like to know too... Maybe try slippers?

I’m here for the answer too! I cut my toenails properly but still seem to wear through a lot of socks...

You don't darn them? Just throw them away?

@thesandman I’ve never darned a sock in my life! I had a lovely bamboo pair for Christmas and they’ve got huge holes in already, so I figure darning would only get me another three months...or does it actually make them more robust?!

The holes are always on the balls of my feet!

@drspouse I did think of slippers but my feet get too hot, and I’m yet to find a pair that don’t make me feel frumpy!!

I’m not keen on shoes in the house, but maybe some very thin soled/fabric soled ones?

Anyone know of any non-fluffy slippers that are actually nice?!

Socks (thick Marino wool) and sliders. Feet don't get too hot, can easily clean and so comfortable. Also lasted me longer than any pair of slippers have.

try a size up.
we have wooden floors that seem to eat socks.
slippers are the solution.
fake slim birkenstock type maybe?

Bridgedales. Or any other hiking sock. They'll go eventually but you have warm, cushiony comfort for ages before they do!

Ok I think I’ve identified the problem - just been googling Bridgedales and merino wool socks and they’re about £10 a pair!! Clearly my usual habit of buying 5 for £5 from Tesco while I’m doing the big shop is a false economy! I’ll hunt for some decent walking sock multipacks and maybe just buy a few good pairs, and see how I get on?!

I find sliders and Birkenstock’s a bit chunky for around the house, but I might hunt down some of those roll up party shoes that are just fabric soled, or even ballet shoes?! Maybe those over socks would protect the socks?!
Thank you for all the sock knowledge!

If you darn them right it will.

I darn socks and I'm a pretty experienced sewist/knitter. They are a pain to darn and don't last much longer. I would rather they just didn't get holes!

I’ve given up on bamboo socks (also pure wool jumpers) as both are too soft to wear very well for long. I prefer natural fibres, but have come to realise that 20% or so synthetics adds durability.

Our family all have what we call an aggressive big toe!!

No sock stands up to it and we always get holes by our big toe and even get holes at the top of our trainers!

Fat face, not had a single hole in those.

I don't darn but I do quickly sew up holes which helps them last longer.

Look at Moshulu slippers, they're comfortable and warm and not too frumpy. I have wooden floors and they're currently very cold- no way could I live without slippers- I wear them literally all day!

Thought bamboo socks are great. Ethical company too. Never got any holes in mine after a year or more wear, all my pretty Seasalt bamboo ones wear through quickly! Thought ones only for me now, they are also very cosy Xxx

Try 'bam' bamboo socks. The toe bit is thicker to avoid holes, mine have lasted ages!

I wear Boots bamboo socks day to day, not noticed more holes than other socks but I wear slippers at home.

I wear Seasalt bamboo socks and have never had a hole in them but I do also wear Geisswein felted wool slippers. They don't make my feet too hot and I don't care about being frumpy.

They also have a hard rubber sole so I wear them outside to go to the bin/ rummage in the garage/ go up the road to my friend's house for coffee etc.

I have that weird genetic thing where my second toe is honestly half an inch longer than my big toe, and all my socks develop holes in that one place. Tiny thing but so annoying!

I wear Happy Socks in the house all the time, they last well, but the bamboo ones never last long at all.

But I do like 'haus shoes' slipper type with more rubust soles like these
Romika or Toms

Buutercupdawn I must be a secret member of your family! Add on to that the fact the pink of my big toe nail grows beyond the end of my toe, so I can't cut it straight or short enough ....

Happy socks have staying power with lots of use and washes as do Sainsbury’s socks from tu.

I make my own ( and all the rest of the families.) Usually bamboo for the summer and merino or alpaca for the winter
