What to wear with sparkly/sequin skirt?

I was thinking a nice, simple short sleeved black top and smart black coat.

I know black opaque tights and boots are nice but my legs are my best asset and bare legs a no in winter!

I know some think sheer tights are awful but can't you get barely there ones? How would they look with a sparkly skirt and nice plain heels?!

It's for a Christmas night out

It depends how long the skirt is.

Mini/above the knee would need tights. I would probably still wear opaques; I haven't quite bought into the sheer tights trend, I'm afraid. But if you can get truly nude/invisible tights and have great legs, then go for it.

Midi/below the knee, I'd go with bare legs. How long are you going to be outdoors for? With party shoes or heeled ankle boots.

Sparkly skirts can be dressed down really nicely with a chunky jumper, half tucked, or a sweatshirt.

I suggest a black t-shirt or grey or navy (it depends on the colour of the skirt - the T-shirt should be in a similar colour).

Then wear high heels and no tights - see the Paris fashion front row for inspiration.

And a smart black coat.

DO NOT WEAR OPAQUE TIGHTS OR BOOTS

I have good, toned legs but varicose veins and not very tanned! I can't believe many get away with bare legs?

Skirt is above the knee

I actually really like them with tights.

This kind of thing.

I also think some people look fab in sheer black tights with DM boots. Not sure about all three together though..

I have just bought a black one from eBay so I'm also looking for inspiration! I like these links too, though I would prefer the gold one if it was black.

i have a few sequin skirts, with which i wear black opaque tights and ankle boots.
on top a cashmere jumper or a t shirt type top, sometimes a silk (or polyester) utility style blouse.
a blazer or a military jacket. depends on my mood.

So definitely Opaque rather than sheer tights?
Seems to dress it down which is fine but I want to look glamorous!

I really wouldn't rule out either. I sometimes like sheer black tights on other people, but they don't suit me. I'm tall and leggy (get me), shame about the enormous mum tum. Sheer tights look a bit tacky on me.

I do like them on others though as I say. Especially with chunky black ankle boots, like DMs.

And I agree, for a dressy look, sheer might be better. I really like them dressed down though, which is how I'm planning to wear it. I haven't been invited anywhere glamorous anyway, sob.

If it is drinks/dinner at a flash place. Wear heels and a grey/white tshirt made from v nice material.
If it’s just drinks at a nice bar you can prob get away with doc Martin type boots.

I wouldn’t wear tights if it’s midi and heels. Can look a bit frumpy. But if it’s shorter def wear tights opaque or sheer.

Yes, I agree with that @uptonogood.

I was eyeing a midi, sequinned skirt on ebay too and would have worn that with bare legs and nice shoes. But, the one I've ordered, (and the one the op says she has too I think), is shorter, so I am not planning to wear it with bare legs. Oh sorry, I mean, I AM NOT GOING TO WEAR IT WITH BARE LEGS. Ahem. Forgot we were doing the caps Halloween Wink.

This is great tips thanks ladies
At the moment I'm thinking smart black short sleeved top tucked in. The sheerest tights I can find and black heels.
Nice earrings but not much else Jewellery wise.

I've ordered two navy and green. The green is to be worn with a black jumper and navy one a silk blouse. 40 denier tights from Primark are good.

Opaque black tights.
Either a tight long sleeved black top, a tight black vest top, or (only if your skirt is tight) a loose oversized t-shirt style. All tucked in.

Oh and nice bag to match the skirt colour. Simple plain and classy. I'm wearing one colour to the Panto and the other for a Christmas meal.

I've seen a nice green Mini Croc Bag but still on the look out for a navy one if anyone has seen one ?

You sound like you have nailed it OP.

I have a midnight blue, sequin pencil skirt. I wear it with a slouchy, black cashmere sweater, nude micronet tights and black suede ankle boots with very pointy toes.

Ooo nude micronet tights sound fun!

I'd wear opaques and ankle boots - heeled or DMs.

I have a silver sequinned skirt and I wear it with a slouchy teal jumper.

Boots and opaque just don't feel right for a nice dinner and dancing!

Am I the only person on the planet who hates ankle boots with skirts? I freely admit to having no fashion sense whatsoever but it just looks so chunky and clunky and shortens the leg. I’m old fashioned - give me an elegant court shoe every time!

I think the boots make your legs look longer. The trick with sparkly skirt is to either get a top that matches exactly (itchy AF) or something as simple as possible. Definitely keep jewelry minimal. Statement earrings OR necklace. (I would always choose earrings as they highlight your eyes) Maybe look at some Trinny videos on YouTube as she’s always styling a sparkly skirt!!!

Dark black tights (80/100 denier) and shoe-boots you can walk / dance in! I like a plain black turtle neck with a statement sparkly skirt.

@dementedma - yeah, you probably are. Grin

To be fair, it has to be the "right" pair to wear with a skirt. A boot that is close-fitting at the top, finishing above the ankles looks best to me. A court shoe just looks a bit too....sensible.
