50th Birthday Present - Bottega Veneta Bag? A ring? Other ideas?

Hi all,

I'm 50 in the Autumn. I've always loved the look of the Bottega Veneta woven design bags. I'm not a big designer bag person, but I used to sell preloved items for other people and this is how I first came across these woven designs. DH knows this, and I have a feeling he may be thinking about buying me one for my birthday (it would be the small Olimpia). I've done some research and some people seem to say that because the leather is so soft it marks easily. This would put me off. It's such an enormous amount of money, and tbh I think I'd be very uncomfortable owning a bag that expensive! Does anyone have any experience with them please?

My other idea is to have a nice ring for my right hand. Probably something plan without stones. I have big hands, so a nice chunky platinum or white gold ring (engagement and wedding rings are platinum). Or even a mix of colours but definiately not gold on its own. Does anyone have any favourite jewellers?

What, if anything, have others had for their 50ths please?

TIA

Ohhhhh I’d love a Bottega Veneta bag, I absolutely adore them! No experience with owning one, sadly. But I personally think with a beautiful bag like that a bit of wear doesn’t matter. Especially with the slouchy styles they do...I’ve got Mulberry and other designer bags and honestly, the pleasure of carrying them isn’t ruined for me by the odd mark here and there.

On Jewellery I’m quite partial to Danish jewellers. I’d probably get something from Georg Jensen or Ole Lynggaard.

I’m not 50 yet, but I’m definitely going to have a bag or jewellery for mine (unless I decide to get a motorcycle, which is a distinct possibility).

I will also be 50 in the autumn and daily walk home past a jewellers that sells some very handsome Georg Jensen rings that I might possibly be coveting...

It would be this one:-

I love how understated it is. I too think they are a think of beauty Nink. That price though! I'd definitely need to get over the "save it for best" mindset.

I'll check out those rings...

For my 50th my DH bought me an Aquaracer Tag Heuer watch & my Dad a lovely pair of white gold hooped diamond earrings - channel set hoops is how I would describe them.

I like bags (a lot) which is why for this birthday I went for jewellery.

A watch is a nice idea Bea. I nearly went for one for my 40th but on reflection I'm glad I didn't. I live in my Garmin sports watch which is one of my favourite possessions.

Maybe I can have both! I really like this ring!

Love the ring , talking of fave things I have a lovely wide oval shaped textured silver bangle that DH bought me and inside is engraved with one of the things he says to me the most - a sort of injokd - I wear it loads and it goes with everything

I bought myself a Bottega Veneta bag for a significant birthday, when I was single and childfree. I used it absolutely loads and it wore very well. I don’t use it any more, it has dated but it’s still lovely. Brought me lots and lots of joy.

Bottega bags are my favourite, no bling or obvious logos and the craftsmanship is gorgeous and perfect, leather so supple and soft. I say ‘are’, but that’s wishful thinking. ‘Would be’ is far more accurate. When I win the lottery....

@championquartz which one did you buy? Pics please?

I know exactly what you mean about the joy that a beautiful bag brings.

@CJDoesTheJackal that ring is very pretty.

I have a woven bottega veneta. Surprise present from DH. Mine is a few years old and hasn’t marked at all. I love it. I especially love the fact that there is no obvious branding on it.

There is a Georg Jensen mobius ring which is gorgeous. I'd go for that.

I love Bottega bags and love the colour of the one you have chosen. However, having had both bags and jewellery I would definitely choose jewellery for a big birthday. In 5 years time, the bag will date and look used where a piece of jewellery will still be lovely.
The ring you have chosen is not comparable to the bag. Start looking at some more high end jewellery. If you’re not looking the stones, £2000 could get you a lovely plain ring.

Hmmm do you know, I’m a huge lover of bags but I’m starting to ever so slowly move away from wanting to spend on them (I have quite a few already); I think by the time I’m 50 I’ll probably agree with Emily that jewellery is a much more prudent choice being a truly lasting thing of beauty. I might go for a watch and a piece of jewellery!

Thank you for your words of widsom.

I actually went into my local jewellers as they're a Georg Jenson stockist. I tried on the ring I thought I wanted but it didn't suit me but they did have the Marcia, and it fitted me so I treated myself Blush. I really, really like it.

I quite like the diamond stud version too:

I take the points about bags dating. I do think the BV one I like is pretty classic. It's just sooooo much money.

I'll think on about birthday presents. I have another 2.5 months and perhaps DH already has some thoughts...

@CJDoesTheJackal
Have a look at Hannah Louise Lamb for a ring. I had mine made by her and its amazing and very personal.
