Anyone a bride in their early 60s? What did you wear?

I'm off shopping with my mum next weekend to try and find her something to wear on her wedding day.

She gets married in July and is 63. Wedding is smallish (about 40 guests) but reasonably formal (Stately Home. Sit down meal etc)

She's convinced a wedding dress will look ridiculous so I suppose will be looking more towards ' Mother of the Bride" type outfits? Then again, she goes on lots of cruises and has various full length formal type gowns so wants something that feels more "special" than those.

Any advice?

Sorry posted to soon, depending on her colouring etc what about a gold colour for a dress? Not so bridal but still a wedding dress in a way?

Something gorgeous in a colour that really suits her, her colour

Years ago now but I remember my x fil got married and his 3rd wife (yeh) wore off-white because it was a wedding I guess but it was so boring because she made it age-appropriate. It had a suit jacket on and such a respectable knee length. She would have been better off going for a gorgeous non bridal colour. jmo

I don't know what your mums style is but a couple of women I know in their 60's wore this kind of dress to get married in (Not to each other, by the way). It wouldn't have to be white.

I know you said not a wedding dress, but something vintage looking, not pure white, and not too fitted, like this could work possibly:

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I agree that she should just focus on something she feels amazing and not worry too much about whether it's "label" - be it a wedding/bridesmaid/mother of the bride dress.

She doesn't like white or ivory (it washes her out) but champagne or gold coloured could work well. I've also said she should consider bridesmaid dresses because she can pick the perfect colour. I think she's put off by the "young, slim models" advertising bridesmaid dresses. I think this style would suit her but in a navy/emerald jewel type colour

I'm of a similar age to your mum and would prefer something with sleeves.
I would personally avoid "bridal" but it should make a statement, she doesn't want to look like just another guest.

What your mum's shape?
I agree that it's hard to visualise a dress on yourself when the online model is 20 and size 8

I don't know about your mum or what her style is but, if it was me, I would want something fitted and with structure. I can't normally afford her but I love Vivienne Westwood because her clothes are cleverly cut and the way they hang is very kind to ageing bodies.

For example this kind of thing although I've not seen it for real and the fabric might turn out a bit clingy. There's also this one although it's way more £££ and it depends on how she feels about sleeves.

Or I'd look for a dress in a similar shape to the one Sarah Murdoch wore to Jerry Hall's wedding. Again it has shape and structure. Personally I'd want longer sleeves. Sorry I can't find a photo that isn't really dark but if you google image it there are others.

For my PILs golden wedding anniversary MIL bought some beautiful shot silk in Thailand and had a dressmaker (here) make her an AMAZING full length gown. She looked incredible because it fitted perfectly and the colour was perfect for her. Would getting a dress made work?

I liked the suggestion of structured by earlier poster (Vivienne W etc). Worth checking out Ted Baker and Adrianna Papell perhaps.

Thanks everyone. Some great ideas. Having something made could be an option and some of the dresses on those links are fab Smile

Hopefully we'll get something sorted during the shopping trip!
