I want to buy a pair of trainers for myself, can some young mumsnetters tell me which I could wear without looking ridiculous as I'm 40+
Thanks!

I'm 50+ and happily wear trainers.

If you are after traditional "sporty" style trainer, New Balance are nice, but I prefer ones like Adidas Gazelle or Puma Classic Suede, as they are a bit more neat.

A lot of people rate Adidas Stan Smith, a classic white trainer, but I find them too clunky-looking.

(I realise you said "young" mumsnetters, but who said 20-somethings have the monopoly on style? Wink )

Leave age out of it!

What do you plan to wear them with? Are you bothered about brand? Any particular colours you are after? How bright do you want them to be? Do you actually want to do any sport in them, and if so what sort?

Hi if they are just for walking everyday rather than serious sports use, then Skechers are nice looking in many styles and very comfortable. I'm not sure how good they are for sports use (they may be great). They are good for everyday wearing.

I love Adidas and Nike trainers. I personally think that black trainers (probably the mesh type ones) look good on anyone, regardless of age.

Thanks for the replies, they would be for walking, I like the Adidas/ Campus/Original but want to be sure that they are not a style just for teenagers!

I'm 53 and a half (!) and have just bought black mesh Nike ones. Not bothered if teens wear them too. Not bothered if anyone older than me wears them either. Wear what you like!

Do yourself a favour and get a pair of skechers. They have memory foam insoles and are like walking on air. I love the skechers gliders which have elasticated cords instead of laces and can be slipped on and off very easily. I am 47 and own 3 pairs I love them that much. DD is 10 and she is on her 3rd pair too. She wears them for comfort in preference to her adidas superstars.

I am the wrong person to ask op , I still wear the bulky skate shoe style of my youth and I'm not far from 40.

Wear what you love with pride.

Never knew there were an age limit for trainers? My theory is, if it fits you and you feel good on it, just wear it! But If you are so concerned, try to avoid bright colors which would be made ideally for teenagers.Maybe Black, white , blue ones would be a good match.

FitFlops if you have any foot problems or posture issues. I've always found them comfortable, and I'm much older than you.

I'm heading towards 60. If there is a decree about trainers, I haven't got the memo :). I live in them because of a nasty accident to my leg, and I wear them with everything - skirts, dresses, trousers. If I thought I could wear them with a cocktail dress, then I would! I'd be ashamed to count how many pairs, but they include silver, leopard, velvet, red, navy, pink and ones with glitter stripes. As well as functional black ones, a brown leather pair, and a white pair I actually run in. I have Nike, adidas, new balance, reebok and Air & Grace. I love my trainers - embrace them! If they fit, are comfortable and you like them, then wear them.

I've recently switched from sports' brands ( which can be quite bright) to Merrells and other types of walking trainer.
I can recommend the Merrell Mimosa Lace.

New Balance are super comfy and are stylish on any age. Also Nike Internationalist, Adidas Haven and Adidas Campus are great.

Please avoid Skechers.

Has anybody seen any nice black leather ones? I lived in some white Geox ones over the summer.

New Balance looked weird on me and made me look like a giant toddler.

I'm past 40 and have just discovered Superstars and Gazelles

I think if you like something you should wear it...and if you wear it, 'own' it then age doesn't come in to question

I'm 46 and i love my trainers!
i wear puma, superga and onitsuga tiger at the moment. my OTs are the plain coloured ones. white and in silver. i love them.
am also looking out for a pair of Nike.

i live in SE Asia atm and everyone loves trainers here. all ages and all brands. new balance also popular but i also find that i look like a giant toddler in them. i have one pair tho.

age doesn't matter ~ find a pair you like and enjoy.

Age has nothing to do with it! I'm heading to my 40s, I have way to many pairs of trainers, Nike air max, adidas Stan smiths, superga, converse, new balance. Pick a pair you like, buy them, wear them. Easy!

Is it a sign of age to continually open threads where the OP declares they are too old to wear something and then I realise they are younger than me?

What women can wear over 30

I'm older than you and am currently wearing sequinned converse with my smart work clothes. They always get compliments.

Geox are brilliant, especially at sale time! Loads of options and comfortable. Some are breathable so better for your feet. Love Nike Flyknits. I am wasaaay older than you!
