Fishnet tights?

flamencina · 21/12/2016 23:08

I fancy getting some black fishnet tights to wear with a short black skirt and Dr Martens boots. I already wear the skirt and boots with black or coloured tights. Am mid 30s and wear docs all the time, that's the kind of style I tend towards.

However, I mentioned the fishnets to DP and got a weird face back. Apparently 'people' don't wear fishnets like that any more and they're just a bedroom kind of thing.

I don't think they're completely mainstream, I know they wouldn't be suitable for work/interview/funeral type situations but for going out of a weekend or a party, would they be okay or would I look like I've gone out with lingerie on?

Bleurgh. Just no.

I do like my Dr Martens. But I usually wear them with jeans, a blouse and a blazer. Or with a button up under a comfortable pullover... so, no. I really would not want to wear that.

However, that's just me. You're the one wearing these clothes, so it's obviously your opinion that ultimately counts.

I'm assuming you'd be going to a place where a black skater skirt and Dr Martens would be seen as appropriate? If yes I can't imagine anybody being particularly surprised by the tights...

I am a fan, but I think the finer fishnets look better these days. M&S have some lovely ones at the moment with a really soft waistband. They also have lacy ones but your DP might not approve of those either. Buy them anyway! Your look sounds great!

Well I think you have to style it up a bit. I'm 42 and wore light blue fishnets with gold sandals and a bright blue dress to a wedding in Sept. I was with the bride and bridesmaids and I asked what they thought before putting them on - the votes went 'for'.

If you want to modernise it you could wear big fishnet over same colour opaques - I think the less contrast the less tack. I wouldn't rule it out

I wear micronets quite a lot in the summer - wolford 20s are really nice.

Black fishnets are making a comeback but not with a short skirt. It's too in your face and a bit tarts and vicars. They're better with a longer skirt.

I have to be honest, I don't think it's a good look either. And defo not with a short skirt and doc martens, go for some semi opaque or something instead. There's not a lot of women who can pull that look off. Sorry. A long skirt and heels maybe though.

If it's your style you could pull it off. I wear Dr Martens and skirts/shorts a lot but always with opaques. I don't like fishnets because of the way they feel - maybe I just bought cheap pairs in the past!

I like the idea of fishnets over coloured tights. I've done that in the past.

I occasionally wear fishnets, usually with a pencil skirt and knee high boots so they are not so in your face though. Skirts and Dms combo are always with opaques or thick tights.

I sometimes wear them but as a pp has said never with a short skirt. That would look tacky. With a long pencil skirt though they can look v sophisticated.

I wear big clunky boots shortish skirts and fishnet stockings. (you wouldn't know they weren't tights... Not THAT short) for parties and weekends! Also sometimes add in a corset and leather jacket xD nice to know what people must think of me! XD (late 20s myself)

If it's your style and you like how it looks then providing as you said situation is appropriate f* what anyone else things and be comfortable and happy! I must admit I don't see many people where I live now dressed like me but where I was before there were loads.

Yes to fishnets. I wear them often. They look great with a short skirt and clompy boots. I'm early forties.

Long time ago (late 80s) I wore fish nets with DM s and short skirts ( tutu !!! ) but always with coloured tights usually red underneath! They don't look nice on their own , much better with other colour or even black underneath .....

I wear nude fishnets in summer, when I want to go "bare legged", but would always go for opaques in winter. Could you compromise with some lacy or other patterned opaques?

I wear black fishnets all the time with short dresses and my docs. I wore this dress with fishnets tights and these docs on a night out last week.

It's my style and I rock it.

Just remember OP, a large portion of MN can't get its head around wearing anything other than skinnies, naice top, heels and a biker jacket/blazer on nights out.

I say go for it Smile.

Hi OP is your style punk or goth or similar? If so this could work (exactly what I used to wear in my early 20s!) - no rules anyway.

If not - definitely steer clear.

I wear fishnets occasionally. I wear them for work with a pencil skirt or for play with a tartan skater skirt and DMs.

Fishnets and tartan are an excellent combination, GretchenWeiners Grin

I used to love fishnets (wore them all the time as part of my goth style at the time) - inc. the one with extra large holes in. They're also brilliant for avoiding the 'slip' you get with normal tights & heels.

I can't see why fishnets are tarty, and sheer tights are not Confused
It's not as if you'll be wearing lingerie out, so can't see how they're a bit bedroom either Hmm
I've seen them worn under ripped jeans a lot.
I say wear them, if that is your style.

horatio I wear a strapless bra with mine, you can't see it. If you have a good supportive one you could totally wear the dress!

Today

Of course not. I usually would as well.
But my breasts are probably still a bit too heavy for strapless...
