Foundation for 60+

I'm hoping someone can help. My mum was round at the weekend and she's feeling really down about herself - she's 66, ex smoker, and quite thin and feels like she looks really old.

I've now got her coming round just after Christmas for a makeover - hair dye is lined up already, and I got her the big estee lauder make up case for her Christmas. I'm thinking before I start I'm going to take her to get her brows done and buy her a lovely new base - but I'm not sure what is out there and good for older skin, mine is still oily and spotty!

Can anyone suggest good options, or even which counters will be best? I don't think I'd get her in to space nk but I've got a big frasers and debenhams so lots available.

Estee lauder and laura mercier. Trouble with ex smokers is often the wrinkles especially around the mouth as product can sit in the lines. Maybe explore their skincare range aswell and tinted moisturisers?

Yeah the mouth lines are an issue, careful application and a decent primer are a must I think.

Annoyingly I don't think frasers or debenhams has Laura mercier. Harvey nichols does but I think I've got no chance of getting her in there . Might try anyway as that would open up nars, hourglass, mac, and a few more.

I've only ever used double wear from estee which I think would be much too matt- would their perfectionist be a good option do you think?

I'll take her to try and colour match but I reckon I'll get 2, maybe 3 counters before she loses confidence so I need to chose carefully and know what's worth trying iyswim.

Yes i know what you mean, big beauty dept stores can be overwhelming. I think double wear can be a bit heavy on the coverage. The key is base/primer prior to makeup application and getting her to a counter will teach her application technique which is important for mature skin.

Laura mercier is very good.. Estee and maybe bobbi brown

Charlotte Tilbury Magic foundation is demi matt and is marketed for all ages. It has a 'magic' ingredient that plumps out lines (from website: Genius Hyaluronic Filling Spheres and mushroom extract). I don't have many lines but the ones I do have aren't highlighted when I use this.

I also use Estee Launder DW and find CT Magic is a lot lighter but it does give full coverage if you need it to.

it sounds like there may be two issues: finding the right product and finding the right person selling it. If you're feeling a bit shit about yourself, a super glamorous consultant who's a third of your age can have you running in the opposite direction.

I like Bobbi Brown for both reasons. Their Skin Foundation works well for me although my face is more saggy than lined so it may not be the best product for your mum. But I also find their consultants are very approachable and really do listen to you as well as knowing their stuff.

Looking Fabulous Forever is an online makeup range for the older lady. They do a great primer and foundation, although colours are limited. But also they have YouTube tutorials featuring older models to show you exactly how to put it on. Highly recommended.

Statistically Not to worry, CT Magic is the same price as Estee Lauder DW, around £30.

Perhaps try Bobbi Brown serum foundation, or have a look online at the Space NK video with Jenny Hawkins; she is 59 and the make up artist uses Oskia Get up & Glow, then Hourglass Ambient Light Correcting Primer, followed by Laura Mercier's Candelglow Soft Luminous Foundation and Ambient Lighting Powder (I've use this powder with the serum foundation and it is excellent).

I have the ambient powder myself, I love it. I think I will try to get her in to harvey nichols as ours has a space nk in it too- the Laura mercier gets a lot of good reviews and so do a couple of the hourglass foundations.

I've got an almost unused bottle of the touche eclat blur primer, unfortunately it doesn't work on my skin so I'll give it a try on her I think. Happy to buy her one bit it's just sitting there looking sparkly!
