Black leather jacket

I've lost quite a bit of weight and planned to treat myself to a black leather jacket when I'd hit my goal weight.

But.... Everyone seems to have one. Is it a bit passé? Is there anything I need to know to avoid or get in particular eg quilted? Buckles etc?

The thing is they are so classic, especially if you get a good one. Jaeger Outlet has a lovely black biker on just now for £149 and I was so tempted but couldn't justify it this month 🙁

I'm after one too! I agree with Bejay that they're pretty classic. Different styles will come and go and I suppose bikers have been around for a while but I don't think leather jackets change that quickly because they're not really fast fashion.

I'm going to look for short, fitted, not too much hardware and not black. That's not because I'm in the know about trends but because that's what will suit me best.

There are some great links on the Autumn/winter essentials thread.

Bejay don't suppose you have a link to that?

Thanks for the tips I was also thinking of a dark grey/blue as an alternative?

Whistles have navy.

My black one is definitely my favourite, but it took me years to find one that I loved, could afford, and didn't have too many zips etc. I felt a bit too 'fat old goth' in some of them.

I've got a lovely pine green one. Looks much nicer (on me) than any black ones and goes with black white grey navy and jeans so v versatile.

That's lovely, BeJay.

That is lovely. I'm more going to be wearing it with t-shirts converse jeans- do I need something less fitted/more relaxed. What do you think of the all saints ones?

I think I want fairly fitted but I'll have to try some on. I'm mainly thinking grey or possibly navy or dark brown if the shade is right. But then Remus linked a khaki Whistles one on the autumn/winter thread and it's been calling to me Grin

I actually think black is in less danger of dating as it's so classic but I don' t suit it so it's out for me.

I quite like this grey All Saints one but I'm not sure about the quilting. I don;t want too much going on but that's mainly because I'm small:

I have this All Saints one and LOVE it, get tons of wear out of it, loads of compliments: www.allsaints.com/women/leather/allsaints-cargo-biker-WL047C/?colour=140&category=25

Leather is incredibly soft and it's super comfortable. I also have a green one that I inherited from a friend that's thoroughly broken in.

Both those all saints ones are lovely. I think I might have to get out and actually try them on.

I'd really like to try and find one that hasn't been pre-softened. One of the joys of owning a leather jacket used to be breaking it in and watching it get better and better with age. That's all gone now. Plus I dread to think what processes they use to soften it up.

So if anyone knows anywhere that does modern jackets in old-school leather, please shout!

You'll never regret a good leather jacket. I have a very dark navy one from Armani which I bought a million years ago and it is still one of my most worn things. I am steeling myself to pick an AllSaints one but am forever unable to decide on which one.

Oh BeJay I Really wish you hadn't linked to that. My fingers are itching to buy one. In a fit of enthusiasm I gave my bike jacket to my niece who lives 100s of miles away and now I want that jaeger one really badly.
Black or tan? What do people think?

^dark navy bike jacket* - swoon.
I still lust after a bright blue one from Paul Smith but it was £400. And, you know, bright blue.

But black or tan Jaeger and only £150...

Agree - classic. I have a biker one one from mango that I bought about 15 years ago and still going strong! Ageing nicely in all the right places and I still love it.

Don't listen to me. The cargo one isn't in the sale. Typically.

I love the Allsaints one, definitely more casual and younger style.

notagiraffe, not tan!

giraffe I'm not a fan of black but I don't like that shade of tan either. So neither for me, sadly.

There's one in Topshop called the Quilted Faux Leather Biker which I have and is amazing! It's a cheaper way of doing it but it looks and feels like real leather and the best thing is it has no top collar so it's much less bulky around the neck and you can wear big scarves with it and not feel strangled.

However you have to size up in it (as all the reviews say) as it fits v narrow unless you have no boobs.
