It's my MIL 65th birthday this month and I thought I might buy perfume. I was chatting to her and she's been wearing the same things for years. Beautiful in summer, red door in winter and opium in an evening if she's going out.

I thought a change may do her good so any ideas? Personally I can't stand red door or opium so I can't rely on my own tastes.

I wear Beautiful in the summer. Perhaps she might like one of the Liz Earle scents ? No 1 is light and floral and people always say to me"lovely what is that ?" . Comes in a pretty box too .

Buy her something frm Jo Malone. Pricey but you can't go wrong with that
I like the lime basil and mandarin body lotion but I also got red roses hand lotion for Christmas, which is lovely.

Giorgio Beverly Hills Eau De Toilette 90ml

Currently on sale at Boots. My Mum is similar with her choices and loves this one.

I would also stick with similar scents and not try to sophisticate her tastes. Perfumes are incredibly personal and you are being lovely to try to find something she would like that is appropriate for her.

I like Opium and Beautiful. I don't know what Red Door smells like.

Anothr of my faves is Clinique Aromatics Elixir. It's definitely a distinctive scent.

Thanks some good suggestions. I doubt she's heard of jo Malone so I'd be slightly reluctant to spend that sort of money . I love it for me though. Will look at Liz Earle and clinique. I remember georgio from the 1980's. I can't remember what it smells like though.

I wouldn't.

You can go very wrong with perfume.
Could you go shopping together?

I thought the smaller sizes of Jo Malone were comparable in price to "Beautiful", etc?

There are soooo many perfumes for you to choose from! But the thing is, your search going to have to take place in the "middle", with fairly "safe" scents.

Estee Lauder do a "Private Collection", which includes "Tuberose Gardenia" - this is available in a handbag size; so rather cheaper and less committable-to. It's bright, floral, with great sillage and lasting-power. I think it would be an easy step for your MIL from "Beautiful" to this, and "TG" is less 80s.

Dior do a set of "Escalier" perfumes which are floral, citrussy, and lovely.

A really beautiful perfume, modern but with a family likeness to the ones your MIL likes, might be "Iris Nobile" by Aqua di Parma. (I may have spelled the perfume house incorrectly there.)

I love the way your MIL has a "going out perfume" - I used to have that, back in the days when I "went out". I think Hermes "Ambre de Merveilles" is a lovely "going-out" perfume.

Sigh. I had hoped to be given perfume for Christmas this year.

All of these are available in John Lewis or another good-sized department store.

Jo Malone "Lime, Basil and Mandarin" is great. I think it's nice to introduce some new fragrance into your MIL's life. There has been a perfume revolution over the last couple of decades - you're bringing it to her, and that is fab.

I agree the choice now is overwhelming so I can see why she sticks with what she knows. I will take a johnlewis trip armed with the above names thanks.

Givency iridescence is like a heavier beautiful.
