Help me pleeeaaaaaassse...tiny holes keep appearing at the bottom of all my tops

It's driving me MAD! I think it may be where they rub on my jean button/fly. I first noticed it on drapey h and m tops, so just thought it was 'cos they were crappy fabric but have now noticed holes in my new merino jumper, and an Anglomania top ( sob) and some cashmere. Have anti-moth stuff.
Does anyone else get this and how can I stop it?

Title fail Blush should be tiny holes...

It's probably some work surfaces in your house, have a feel along the edge of the kitchen worktops and the bathroom vanity unit - one of them is probably rough.

Jbck · 06/10/2013 17:19

I find its when Im working at the kitchen worktops or doing the dishes. It is the button rubbing so I try not to lean against them now.
I don't know if it prevents it completely as I don't gave anything new in jersey or cotton as they seem to be worse since I started trying to avoid doing it.
I also wear an apron.

AndSheCalledHimCustard · 06/10/2013 17:19

Do you have a belt with a metal buckle with sharp corners? Probably one of the ones that kind of clip shut.

somethingscary · 06/10/2013 17:20

Mine do this rubbing on the jeans button bit. It's really annoying. I've tried putting duck tape over the top of the button/button hole which helps a bit

cathyandclaire · 06/10/2013 17:22

Haven't been wearing a belt...off to stroke my work surfaces to see if they're to blame.

Maybe the answer is to stop doing any housework Grin

Oh there have been threads about this before. I don't think it has ever been solved.

fivefoottwowitheyesofblue · 06/10/2013 17:24

There have been several threads on this topic. No definitive reason has been found, but stops you thinking you are going mad knowing it happens to others too Grin

BardOfBarking · 06/10/2013 17:30

I was convinced by the cleaning agents on counter surfaces argument. This also appeared on LBC mystery hour and it's happening to a lot of people - mostly women!!!

C0smos · 06/10/2013 17:32

I have exactly then same problem, not managed to solve it yet, it's only on 1 side as well so I obviously do something wonky

helloeverything · 06/10/2013 17:37

Just a thought -
Is it where the anti-theft device was? I have this problem a lot, don't wear jeans or belts or do house work (not really), and its often at the side.

cathyandclaire · 06/10/2013 17:38

DH rather disloyally said he was sure I didn't do enough housework to wear holes through my tops (also frankly I'm too short for the work surface to rub against my hips it tends to hit my tummy button) ...his theory is that it's the lap strap of the seatbelt ( I'm on my car loads) pushing the top against the jean button. Think I'm going to try the duck tape solution....oh the glamour!

do you have granite surfaces?

cathyandclaire · 06/10/2013 17:54

We do have granite surfaces

such an annoying problem!
I found it was the seat belt in the car rubbing my tops against the button or belt on my jeans. Now I always pull my top up over the seat belt so it doesn't happen.
It is no way cleaning too much here Wink

friendlymum67 · 06/10/2013 18:24

This has happened to lots of my tops - Sad. I don't have granite worktops Sad, don't do lots of housework Grin, but do wear jeans with and without belts ...... It is very annoying!

hattymattie · 06/10/2013 18:30

I just think there has been an overall decline in quality - especially that slubby cotton. I do remember somebody saying on one of the other threads that during a very fast spin cycle the cotton could be sucked into little holes in the side of the washing machine drum. I do try to wash the thinner cottons on a delicate cycle which works a bit.

plentyofsoap · 06/10/2013 18:39

I purchased some wash bags from john for delicate clothes and wash my cotton tops inside these. No more holes Grin

wrigglebum · 06/10/2013 18:39

Yes, I get this. It's got better since I stopped wearing belts with buckles (just use one with rings now, they're really hard to find for adults for some reason).

Carrying children around is what causes it for me I think, or makes it a lot worse since I've always had it happen. If it's just one or two I can sew them up, but otherwise the top is ruined Sad.

I do think things aren't made with such good fabric these days too- it never seemed to happen on nice thick tshirts, but they all seem to be made with really thin cotton these days. I took one tshirt back as it had 5 holes after one wear!

dilbertina · 06/10/2013 18:39

In our house it's down to a gerbil called "Nibbles". This probably doesn't help you though. (Apart from as a warning never to name an animal after an undesirable trait).

wrigglebum · 06/10/2013 18:40

I've had no luck using delicates bags.

Yes- that slubby cotton is the worst for it.

AnnaBegins · 06/10/2013 18:45

My holes in clothes were down to a belt, really annoying! Have mended most now but every now and again wear a top I haven't worn in a while and find another...

I think we had moths when this happened to us. Our wardrobes have spotlights above them so in the evening if we have the windows open the bugs flight right in, into the wardrobe. I hoovered out my wardrobe and placed cedar wood things in and hot washed most of the clothes. It was a nightmare. It cost me a fair bit in eaten clothes

VinIsGroot · 16/05/2017 23:39

I had this ... found it was carrying DS and the Velcro in his shoes rubbing against them!
