Eyelash curlers - worth it? Which make?

I've never used them before but want to give them a go. Always been a bit scared I might lose my lashes rather than curling them!
Is there a particularly good make and any tips on how to use? Thanks

Shu umera (however you spell it) are supposed to be the best. I did have some and they worked very well. It is trial and error as I found not every eyelash curler fits with your eye shape and I have bought quite a few over the years that were rubbish.

Eyelash curlers make a huge difference. I got some Shu Uemura for Christmas and they definately have more 'curl' than my old boots pair, but the boots were better than nothing.

I'm very interested in this too. After watching Lisa Eldrige's videos I'm trying to invest a bit more in makeup and would love to know which ones are the best!

THE most important beauty item in anyones make-up bag!! They make all the difference. I have a not-sure-what-brand pair and if I do nothing else in the morning I will brush teeth, hair and curl my eyelashes! They make me look more awake if nothing else!

I have the shu umera ones but I'm not sure whether they are really worth the extra money.

I love my Shu Uemura ones, I think the only other pair I have ever had were from The Body Shop, they were okay but the Shu ones are definitely better.

I got the Shu Uemura ones for Christmas. They are way better than my old generic ones. Use them every day now.

Question though: before or after mascara?

70isaLimitNotaTarget Sat 19-Jan-13 15:19:45

eager they always recommend before mascara as it can stick your lashes to the curler (unless you've got the really good professional silicone ones )

I have the most rubbish eyelashes in the history of mankind (not even Benefits They're Real cuts it with mine) <<sigh>>
I do right up at my lash line (careful not to pinch the skin -ouch ) then halfway, then the end.
I don't wear mascara every day (maybe twice a week) so I don't feel I'm damaging them.

wrenster Sat 19-Jan-13 15:20:01

I think before, according to the videos anyway!

Looks like quite a few votes for Shu Uemura.......very tempted!

Glittertwins Sat 19-Jan-13 15:26:26

Shu uemera here as well. They are better than my previous ones.

Kittycatcat Sat 19-Jan-13 16:25:49

I've just ordered shu ones from eBay on recommendation from this thread so thank you grin

louschmoo Sat 19-Jan-13 19:40:58

I use boots own brand ones and they're fine, i do warm them with a quick blast from my hairdryer though. I find this gives a much longer lasting curl.

Jammygal Sat 19-Jan-13 19:44:07

I have had several rubbish pairs in my time including a pair of tweezerman which were not cheap. I had almost given up thinking they just didn't work for me until.........
I splashed out for a pair of shu ones and I love them....don't use them every day but they do genuinely make a difference!

MildredH Sun 20-Jan-13 01:14:56

Definitely second warming the curlers when hair dryer although obvious caution needed before taking the hot metal to your eye! Does last all day tho..

I have the Shu whatsit ones too although they are in desperate need of replacement rubbers but I've been told they're not available and I need an entire new set which seems excessive.

I've been using eyelash curlers for years and years and couldn't honestly say I'm convinced these posh ones are better than my Superdrug predecessors..

Kittycatcat Sun 20-Jan-13 07:39:52

Mildews you can get them on eBay, I saw them yesterday when I ordered curlers.

Kittycatcat Sun 20-Jan-13 07:40:15

Apologies for predictive text Mildred

auldspinster Sun 20-Jan-13 09:07:18

I had shu uemura ones but got scuppered by the lack of replacement pads - I've got qvs ones from superdrug currently which are pretty good, the secret to good curlers is curved pads.

MildredH Sun 20-Jan-13 14:21:53

Thanks for the tip Kitty- I've ordered the £3.99 sheseido ones.. grin

Will try to remember to post back whether any good.

Deathwatchbeetle Sun 20-Jan-13 15:11:26

One tip I heard about after curling your lashes is to use waterproof mascara cos it holds curl longer. Even if you only use on ecoat of waterproof mascara and then use your 'normal' one.

CandyLoo Sun 20-Jan-13 15:30:07

Thanks for your replies, think I'll try the shu uemura ones, and watch some videos too (scared of losing lashes!)

Kittycatcat Sun 20-Jan-13 18:20:32

Good stuff Mildred. Fingers crossed.

Cheesymonster Sun 20-Jan-13 18:35:59

I have the tweezerman ones and they work great. Never tried shu uemuera though but please be wary of possible fake ones on eBay. I was put off by the fact you can't buy replacement pads!

AViewfromtheFridge Sun 20-Jan-13 18:42:09

Revlon do a pair with a spring in that are really good, and you can get replacement pads.
