Are fringes high maintenance?

I was just catching up with some Doc Martin and decided I really like louisa's hair. So now am dreaming of a fringe! Are they hard work though? Would like one just like hers but haven't had a fringe since I was 13!
Is it a bad idea?! (secretly sure it is!)

I had one done in April (am 32 and the last fringe I had I was about 13). It was a nice change but it's annoying the hell out of me now. My hair grows really fast, so it always seems to need trimming. So I'm growing it out.

DD got one cut in in August, tis a pain - needs trimmed every 4 weeks and she ends up having to straighten it most days

No, they're not. mine would look good for 2 weeks, bug me for 2 weeks before i either got it trimmed or did it myself and messed it up so had to pin back. I wouldn't get another.

I've had a side fringe for years. If I'm having a bad fringe day I clip it to one side or twist it up with a clip or slide. Solid fringes are trendy but you need the face to wear a bold fringe.

I got one, and the slightest bit of damp and it goes a bit curly, I'm growing it out.

Yes, I think so in terms of fitting in regular trims so it doesn't look crap. In terms of daily maintenance it's easy and makes me look more groomed if I have a week day when I just want to tie my hair up.

Plus it hides my grey and my eyebrows when I haven't been back to the threading woman as soon as I should have...

Oh yes, my fine hair finds it frizzes in damp weather too. I use straighteners and make sure my hair is very dry before I leave the house. That gives it more staying power.

It's quite easy to trim your own fringe - I know next time you go to the hairdressers they complain and look shocked but no one else seems to notice.Just take your time and be prepared to neaten it up a little over the next day or so as it sits differently.I think the trick is not to take it too short.

If you're greying ever so slightly round the temples but not dyeing yet a fringe makes it easier to wear it up without showing the odd grey hair.

And you can always clip it back...

Mine isn't hard work at all - I've got very thick hair though and my fringe naturally curls under though. I actually think I look rubbish without one!

I have a full blunt fringe, I have it trimmed every 3 weeks. It is free at my hairdressers so I nip in when I can. It is a bit of a pain sometimes, I used to trim my own when it was a side fringe but now it is too full and you can tell if I make any mistakes!

Can't help at cheap Botox, that's exactly why I have a fringe, trouble is I don't ever remember not having the creases in my brow.

I have a full blunt fringe too. I get a fringe trim (free) every 3 to 4 weeks.

I don't have to straighten it every day & have thick wavy hair. I LOVE my fringe...and like someone else said it hides my forehead wrinkles & also when longer unruly eyebrows !!

Well, let's just say that I have the most reasonable and unstroppy teenager ever invented, but since she's had a fringe 4 mornings out of 7 somthing gets thrown accross her bedroom.....

you so have to think about it a bit move, in as much as getting it trimed (though i trimmed my own)

if you've naturally straight hair i'd say it's less maintainace than if itls wavy, of if you have a cows lick itld be more so.

I have wavy hair with a cows lick but kept it for ages - also hadnlt had one since i was 13. I clipped it back on bad days, and grrew it out recently, mindd you ilve not had a haircut for agws so might go back to it

so in a nutshell it can be high maintainance but youlve likeing og it might outweight that

It depends on your hair type. Mine needs five or ten minutes of attention every day as my hair is fine, wavy and prone to frizz, and I have a cowlick. I have to wash my fringe every morning so I can blow dry it into the proper position. My hair is long so I just tie it back while I shampoo my fringe, no need to wash the whole lot.

The only problem is damp days...I usually wear it in a French plait across the front or clip it back if it's a filthy day.

I trim it myself, once you get the hang of it it's easy. Do it on dry hair though or you will end up with a tiny Bettie Page bang whether you wanted one or not!

Over the last five or six years I've had about six different fringes and grown them out, they are a nice way to make a difference to your appearance without a dramatic change to the colour/length of your hair (though I've done those too :) ).

I'm growing mine out again just now as expecting DC2 and don't want to look like a scarecrow when I get up, but it will be coming back once I go back to work, probably for good as I'm mid 30s now and they are really good for covering stuff up! See Mary Portas, her fringe makes her look really youthful I think.

Ask the hairdresser what kind of fringe they think would suit you and show them some pictures of fringes you like, then do it! Go on. Fringe fringe fringe fringe!

I think a side-fringe is easier. Straight fringe I found annoying as it seemed like no time at all until it grew long enough to be in my eyes and needed trimming, and I didn't like to cut it myself in case it went wrong!

With a side fringe I think it's easier to pin out of the way if you want to, more forgiving of getting a bit overgrown, and less of a risk to trim yourself!

Yes mine is. I have fine wavy hair and a thick fringe. It is high maintenance but makes the rest of my hair low maintenance. I get it trimmed every 3-4 weeks for free at the hairdressers. Every hairdresser I've ever been to will do this provided you normally get your hair cut there. i don't wash it everyday, but do straighten it with GHDs at least once a day. actually I have special mini GHDs especially for this

I've recently (last 2-3weeks) had a full fringe cut in and I love it. I straighten it in the morning which takes 2 mins tops and it makes a plain ponytail look much better. I've had lots of positive comments and been told it makes me look younger :)
