What timing! I was waiting until I'd had my 20 week scan to start buying things and I've had that today - came on here to ask if anyone could recommend a sling and here is a whole new topic for me to ask on!!

DS is a very active toddler and I would love to be able to continue all of his activities once DD arrives in December (he'll be 2.9) I won't be able to take the pushcair everywhere so I'm hoping I'll be able to strap her to me and take her along that way. I'm thinking this will be most handy at the soft play center and our regular walks in the park.

I'm quite petite and only 5'1" and will have probably had a 2nd c-section

Can anyone suggest a good sling?

I will probably be the first of many to suggest a stretchy wrap- we had a Moby which was great. Our DS was born in November and the jersey fabric was lovely and snuggly in the winter. It takes a little practice to tie but there are plenty of videos on youtube which we found very helpful. DS lived in it for about 6 months!

My dcs are almost teenagers now but I loved our Wilkinet when they were little - so did they. Used to walk miles. I don't see them around much now though. Not sure why?

Another Moby fan here. I also used a hotsling when DD was tiny. Use the Moby more now though.

We've got one of these here and its really come into its own now dd is a toddler and is on the hip...

They are on sale in TK Maxx too.

If it is mainly for running around outside, then you might want to consider a MeiTai like a Babyhawk - will do front and back carries till 18 months old or so.

If you will wear round the house, so will want to pop baby in and out, then a Moby or Closer would be good

You can buy slings second hand on the Yahoo group UKBabywearingSwap, and they are much cheaper than new.

We have a kari-me and it's great (pretty similar to moby)
I can carry ds (6mo) in it, or DD (3.5) can still go in it on DH's back... meaning it's really useful on a day out, when DS is wanting to look at stuff he can come out of the pram, but at the end of the day when she is tired, dd gets a rest too.

I'd recommend a Coorie fleece pouch sling from {{www.brightsparkslings.co.uk}}, my dd3 was in hers constantly from newborn until she was approximately 6 months old, it's so easy to pop on (like a sash), as soon as I popped her in it she would magically fall asleep!

I'm going to be breastfeeding too hopefully - would I be able to just pop one out with one of these slings and feed on the go? (with practice obviously)

feeding on the go takes practise IME.

i would say a wrap, start with a stretchy like a moby or kari-me. then if you really love it, once baby is bigger move onto a woven.

Stretchy wrap. You can breastfeed in it (though I never managed to).

I think Wilkinets aren't seen much any more because there are newer carriers which are similar but better. I tried a Wilkinet with my 10 month old and didn't like it at all - but can see it would be great for younger babies.

I would say stretchy wrap too - although they have a limited life as they aren't as suited to heavier babies (despite what some of the manufacturers say), they are easy to get the hang of and really flexible if you want to pop the baby in and out without retying. Mobys seem to do quite well on ebay - if you bought one second hand you should pretty much get your money back.

I like the Baby Bjorn, so easy to put on and baby can be laid flat in it if falls asleep (just unclip the front part)Brilliant for newborns and great up to about 6 months for front facing. Sturdy and easy to adjust. Mine has been used for 8 kids (not all mine!) and is still in amazing nick. They also don't lose much in value if you resell. Also like the design, simple and smart. Had a Wilkinet and had to send it back as I could not put it on properly.

I've got a Baby Bjorn but I wouldn't be able to feed in it.

I also used to find it really uncomfortable. The cross at the back would ride up too high and I gave me back ache. And DS got too heavy far too fast in it too...

I suggest either a kozy carrier or a wrap type sling - like the storchenwiege carry cloths - they are very good from newborn up to toddler and beyond!

We have a (gorgeous rainbow fleece) coorie sling which DD slept really well in but she's 9mo now and its a bit of a squash, also I can't carry her for long on one shouldere.
She spends much more time in our close carrier which I love. Everytime we go shopping her little legs are kicking with excitement cos she can see whats going on and everyone talks to her! Carrying DS (2.5) in it was a really pleasant surprise, not as heavy as I'd expected and comfy too, for both of us - so I don't care who goes in the buggy and who in the sling.
Interested in the Tots bots papoozle with the waist belt though, anyone had a go?

I think either a Moby wrap, a Close carrier or a Kari-Me. It looks like it would give me the best back support and the most options for baby position and be the easiest to share with DH.

Are they all pretty much the same thing or are there differences I'm not seeing in the pictures?

The tots bots papoozle looks similar too!!

Who would have thought buying what seems to be a length of fabric would be so confusing!!

moby and kari-me are just long pieces of fabric which you wrap and tie then pop the baby in and out. Close carriers adjust with rings at the sides so no tying but I have heard that they are not as supportive as the moby type. I haven't seen the papoozle.
