Sleep

How can I get my 2 yo to sleep in her bed and not by the door?!

She has been in her bed for a month? Maybe a bit less.

She loves her bed, but gets out of it lots. We put her back, she gets up, plays with bears or reads a book, then goes to sleep. We go in to check on her to find she is asleep by the door on the floor, although sometimes right next to her bed like she fell asleep before she could get back in it!

This evening, I heard a noise thought it was her awake, and it was her turning in her sleep, on the floor. Again! I have put her in her bed again, and she will now sleep in it for the rest of the night no problem.

I think she gets up because she can and then gets tired and falls asleep before she realises she is tired and that she should go back into her bed.

She is getting very tired, as she also wakes up earlier now too. I would say her actual sleep in 9pm to 6:30am, not enough.

Any ideas on how to keep her in her bed in the first place? How can we teach her to return to her bed on her own before falling asleep?

And again. On the floor, after being put into bed countless times.

I took out almost everything out of her room. Her clothes were already moved into our room as she takes them out of the drawers. I have left her baby and crib, and a small box of dominos, 3 books, 3 bears.

I was thinking that perhaps her room was too cluttered, but she just wont settle.

She had a good routine this evening, as she does most evenings. I snuggled with her, we sang gentle nursery rhymes, read a couple of books, had kisses and cuddles. She was nice and dozy.

Two minutes after I left the room, she was banging on the door because bear had poo'd! Then she played with them for ages.

Should I take everything out of her room? That seems really cruel...

sounds like my dd, we put stair gate on to stop her dancing round the house (post her discovering how to climb out of cot)

she would often be asleep by stair gate, that was about 2 months ago, now increasingly she is in bed, not so bad being asleep on the floor if you are little and you are put back to bed

sorry your thread not been responded to, I am eratic poster so apols in advance as not much time to get on here

good luck with her

How old, exactly is she? Ie is she nearer 2 than 3.

If you're concerned about her sleep deprivation, I would consider putting her back in her cot for a bit. I don't think she's ready to be in a bed.

I didn't move my son until he was 2.9. When I did I told him he wasan't allowed to get out of bed, and that when he woke up in the morning he had to shout for us. And that's exactly what he did.

I'm not sure he realises he 'can' get out of bed, IYSWIM?

LOL, I was not being entirely serious, sort of digging at another thread (oh how norty of me!).

She is not falling out of bed, she gets out to play with toys/read books, generally anything to be out of bed, just because she can. I think she likes the freedom of not being restricted to her cot, and sort of forgets to get back into bed before she goes to sleep. She has fallen out of her bed, twice though!

I dont think she is sleep walking, she does it before she actually goes to sleep in the first instance.

Kafka - she got out of her cot too, which is why she is a bed now.

So I am just going to have to ride it out? She is so tired, little love, she just wants to play, and play, and play, and play!

spud oh don't say that, its in the loft in pieces now!!! And her room is all giggled around for the bed!!!

She is 2 and 1.5 months, and went into her cot at 2 and two weeks, and the only reason we did that was because she climbed out of her cot. She is a tiny girl, and even with the side bar down, the fall was quite a fall, although she sort of pole vaulted over. Very agile!

So, she would be out of the cot too, playing with toys, and she fell asleep on the floor then too. Which is why we got the bed. I went in one day when she was still in the cot, to find her sprawled in the middle on the floor surrounded by bears, books and toys!!! And it has not changed since!! .

My 6.5 yr old did this for the first 3 years of sleeping in a bed. Still does sometimes. I just took to putting a mini duvet thing by the door so she was comfy until I went to bed and then I'd somehow get in, trying not to smash the door into her head, and carry her into her bed. Oh and when she was teeny and used to do it, I put a gate up at her door so she slept behind that and I could scoop her up and put her back into bed easier.

Seems like there are just some kids who like the floor.

When I haven't shut her door poroperly before I've heard a strange noise coming from the landing, gone out and gone flying over her as she was just asleep on the landing, snoring.

Thomcat - yesterday when I picked her up, she opened her eyes, smiled and said in a surprised voice 'mummeee', snuggled into me, and then when I put her on her bed, rolled over, sighed and went to sleep.

Then woke me up banging on her door for a drink at 2am! I have put a drink in her room this evening.

Mmmm cute. Sounds like it's worth her sleeping on the floor for a snuggle like that.

My DD at a hefty 6.5 yr old isn't so easy to scoop back into bed these days!

When we were on holiday DD1 and DD2 shared a twin room with a v small gap between the 2 beds. They ended up on top of each other on the floor at some time in the early hours. It was most amusing!

My two dd's share a room. Unless dd2 (2.9) is really tired she doesn't stay in her bed until she falls asleep and she has been like this since she moved to a bed. At least now she stays in her room and doesn't wander round the house at random times during the night.

Their bedroom is normally trashed by the time they get to sleep but as long as they are quiet I don't care. When I go up to bed I put dd2 back in her bed and remove the cat from dd1's bed. That is unless all three are asleep in dd1's bed or one occasion where dd2 was in dd1's bed, the cat was in dd2's bed and dd1 was in the wardrobe!!!!(we have pictures)

Sorry no help at all - I think you just have to ride it out!!

Why not stay in the room with her until she falls asleep, that way she will not be getting out of bed and playing. Just sit on the bed, or on a chair by her bed and wait for her to go to sleep. Or lay in the bed with her, what ever works!!

If she's like my DD though she falls asleep in her bed and then gets out / falls out later.

Elk - ROFL you must show us pictures of that!!!
Green - she wont sleep with us in the room. Never has. Even when she is poorly, unless really poorly, she will fidget, play with my hair, talk, get up, fuss, and NOT sleep.

If I am there, she stays too excited. Even if I don't talk to her, just stay there.

She has a lamp on which I think might be a bit bright, but she insists on it being on. I have fairy lights which give a nice soft glow, but she cries if the lamp is off. Although it is more an annoyed cry not an upset cry, and I turn it off when I go to bed myself.

Hmm, how about sitting outside her door and telling her to get back into bed when you hear her get out, or putting toys in her bed so she doesn't have to get out of bed to play?

I'm clutching at straws now, neither of mine like going to sleep alone so I am in the opposite situation to you!!

greenmonkies - she chucks all toys/bears out of her bed 'OUT' she shouts if I put them in it. She does not like toys in her bed. Apart from occasionally Baby, who can come to bed so she can pat her bottom and cover her in a blankey and shhh her, then when she has had enough, she gets chucked too!

Mostly I dont mind her wanting to go to sleep on her own, it makes it easier, usually, to get our own space. But sometimes, I like to snuggle with her in bed, and would love for her to come to bed with me and us fall asleep together, if I am feeling a bit poorly, or if she is, I love it.

But she is such a bag of wiggles. She gets it from me, cant sit still for 5 mins usually! She has two modes. Go. Stop. there is no rest period in between that. Even though the nursery claimed today she did not sleep, but she rested for an hour. Er, yeah right!

she sounds like my ds was at that age, non stop, however he was very obliging when it came to staying in his cot and was in it until nearly three

dd on the other hand can climb out of anything, and is one of those people who with narcolepsy tendencies today she was found asleep on the table

good luck with it at least she is staying in her room
