Every time I arrive on the site, half my screen is filled with stuff about Pregnancy.
I'm 52
one of my kids is at University, the other soon will be
PLEASE
make a way for me to hide stuff that most definitely does not "interest me"

Hi TalkinPeace,

Thanks so much for flagging this one to us. We appreciate the feedback and will pass your comments over to the relevant teams (sounds like adverts and content are the issue here).

If you could upload a screenshot just so we definitely send it to the right place, that'd be really useful.

But surely we all get these 'this may interest you' ads? None of them are my cup of tea either, but they're hardly the end of the world

Look at the bottom right hand corner of my screenshot, it looks as though a separate site is powering this ads, although MN will have sold that advertising space to the other site.

I treat it like monster sending me driving job opportunities when I couldn't actually drive apparently it was based on my interests 🤔

I have this as well. 6 adverts of utterly no interest at all, 5 of which are mumsnet content.

Hah yes. This may also interest you:
Parenting tricks
Mumsnet PG calendar guide* ("congratulations, you're pregnant" bla bla bla)
12 unexpected ways life changes once you have children
PG does and donts
Best short haul hols with babies and toddlers

Nope none of those interest me what with being a post meno woman with a small fistful of teenagers.

*this one isn't very kind, actually. Be mindful of those whose journey to parenthood is not easy. Thank you.

Every time I try to go to "threads I'm on"

Could there not at least be the option to click "no thankyou" and get rid of them.

as a week by week pregnancy calendar is NOT in my plans at the moment Grin

Meh it doesn’t bother me (at least as far as the mobile site goes) it’s below the content inaccess and I mainly only see a little bit of the first advert below the “this might be of interest to you bar”. They’ve got to make money somehow, I don’t care if adverts are irrelevant. shrug

Just remembered there was an MNHQ stickied (at the time) thread about this last year www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/2924841-Testing-a-new-links-widget-on-Chat?msgid=68975059

It's all the sales adverts that are driving me mad at the moment, all 'look how much we're reduced the dress you bought full price back in November'. Fuck off House of Fraser. I suppose at least I do go to the House of Fraser website though whereas we all seem to be being told 'this may also interest you' about the same things wherever we are in the site.

I hate it when people on MN. Like they're too cool to care.

This is what is currently on the sidebar of MN for me!

I have three adblockers running on my computer.
All of the links my screen is full of are MN's own

I don't think that the ads that the OP is concerned about is on the sidebar, but at the bottom, underneath the blue bar which says "This may also interest you". But I do realise that the desktop site, mobile site and App all probably look quite different. (I use the desktop site).

"I hate it when people on MN. Like they're too cool to care." Gonethebest, if I was too cool to care I wouldn't be posting on this thread in the first place.

My personal view is that I don't mind about these ads, but I'm more than happy to add screenshots and links if they're of any help to the OP - and MNHQ.

PS I agree with flibberty
There are people coming to this site who cannot have kids, who have lost kids, or have other reasons why that set of MN links is deeply inappropriate.

Fine, pop it there for a day, but have a "hide" button on it

  • for misery guts like me
  • for those who find it triggering

thanks matey.

I don't mind the ads, I click on 'em when I can be bothered sometimes fat fingers do it for me anyway cos clicks mean revenue for our lovely free-to-use site CAT me you cunt etc no skin off my nez.

I'm getting them too - 'pregnancy dos and don'ts' and the 'Mumsnet Pregnancy Calendar' are no use to me post-hysterectomy Grin. They don't bother me as I just ignore them, but the 'this may also interest you' is a bit bizarre - like an algorithm has misfired somewhere Confused. It's only within the last few days they have started popping up.

Report
PanPanPanPing · 12/01/2018 18:08

I do not have children. The reasons why are very private - and sad - to me. But as I am a MNer, I realise that this website's advertising tends to be aimed at parents. I do have the ability to ignore the ads which aren't relevant to me.

SexTrainGlue · 12/01/2018 20:34

What I find most annoying is that 11/12 of the so-called parenting tips are actually babycare tips.

Report
lougle · 12/01/2018 22:08

How do you get those Confused I arrive at the site via mumsnet.com/Talk/Threads-Im-On. Then I go from there to Active. I never see any adds except the horrible side bar stuff, etc.

Report
lougle · 12/01/2018 22:10

Ohhh I see them now, apologies. I'm on the mobile app. I must just never scroll that far. All those pixels are wasted on me Grin

My kids are still kids and all the ads are still irrelevant.

Yup, I'm still getting the pregnancy calculator.

How about a menopause calculator on there for balance Grin
