Why is the MN iPhone app so huge?

venusinscorpio · 13/01/2017 13:36

It is possibly just me and I don't know much about the tech involved. But it takes up 1.57 gb at the last count! It is the most massive app I have by quite some way, Netflix is the next biggest one and it's nearly three times smaller and has 2 offline video downloads. I keep having to delete things from my iPhone 5 because it's taking up so much space. It's not storing photos or other files offline, is it, so I fail to see why it is so large! Perhaps someone can enlighten me?

Hi OP, is it the Talk app? We've just checked on an iPhone and the Talk app is taking up a rather more modest 266.7MB so this doesn't sound right. Before we pass this on to the tech team, could you delete then reinstall the app to see if that makes a difference and get back to us? Thank you.

Sure, will do this! I thought it was strange!

Wow, that is huge - ok I have a few questions and I'll look into it (I'm the iOS developer):

  1. What device do you have?
  2. What does it look like when you go into Settings > General > Storage > Manage Storage > Mumsnet ? I've attached mine for comparison, on an iPhone 6.
  3. As mentioned above, what happens when you reinstall?

It's likely an issue with caching images, and me not deleting them properly (oops!).

Thanks Tim. I've been away so haven't deleted and reinstalled yet but will do so tomorrow. It's an iPhone 5. When I go into the storage filepath it says 1.56 gb of documents and data.

Just for comparison, I have MN talk on 30.5 MB. Currently.

To be fair, it's going up (now 32.6) but it's still way down there.

PS - do you actually switch the phone off on a regular basis?

It's 603mb on my iPhone. Is it the number of threads I'm on or something?

venusinscorpio · 15/01/2017 23:58

Yes it's turned off and on regularly.

Beats me. Mine seems too low now. (On an iPad but it's still iOS.)

Not in comparison to the OP's though.

Gawd. Mine is going down. It's less than 30 MB now. Shock

Mine is 556 MB on my iPhone 5. Currently switching over to an iPhone 7 plus and on there (with the same threads watched etc) its 33 MB. I did wonder why it was so big on the other phone! Most of the other apps seemed to have stayed the same size between old and new phone though.

My iPad sizing seems to be around that, consistently. (On the beta test, though.)

Sorry - around the 33 that is.

Some of these sound huge. I'm on a 6s, and mine's 28M.

Does leaving apps running in the background use more space? If I'm low on battery I shut down all the apps I've been using, which happens a couple of times a week. Could that be why mine is so much smaller?

Report
venusinscorpio · 22/01/2017 21:02

I frequently shut down MN as it rinses my battery quickly but it didn't reduce the size of the app. From Tim's comment it sounded like he had an idea why it could happen (not deleting cached images properly) and there was a tech reason on MN's side.
