When do (a) pupils receive their A-level results (b) universities receive them?

Pupils get them on Thursday 19th August. Not sure when universities do, but presume it's pretty soon after!

I have read before on here that universities get them a few days before.

The universities, if they don't get them beforehand (maybe a day before) will get them that morning. They need them to decide if they are going to accept the student against the grades they offered for the place.
Do you have a concern about clearing or something, or a DC not getting their place?

I have helped a French boy with UCAS this year. He missed his offer from Imperial very slightly on one subject, but far exceeded his offer elsewhere. Imperial has told him that they will consider his position when the A level results are out. He wants to be able to ring Imperial to negotiate after Imperial has received A level results but before English pupils have, as his negotiating position will be strongest then!

Universities certainly used to get them first - same day but first thing, while most schools in England, anyway, get them at 6ish then fanny about with them for a couple of hours (mine were done up in some bizarre, unneccessary origami with a couple of official-looking forms about the old girls' association and "how to contribute to the new astroturf" ffs - not what you need in the envelope that tells you whether your plans for the next phase of your life is on track. They'd also managed to do a typed list of everyone in the year with all results from all exam boards BEFORE we were allowed in to collect them!) There was a group of early results on the local breakfast news though, so they were in the building by then!

My DB had to ring his uni as he got hisAAB in the wrong order(!) It was fine, but they'd blatently already seen his results and decided his fate before he even knew he had to call!

Clearing only opens on the Thursday the results come out. Universities won't staff the clearing lines from then, so that it's fair for everyone. He'll need to be on the phone first thing, like 8.30am (although he may not get through until 9). But they should be able to tell him straightaway. Hope he gets his place :)

I've always felt it would be fairer on the English,Welsh and NI students if they had their results and 24 hours to look them over and think carefully about their next steps before Clearing opens. These students are clearly disadvantaged when they are having to cope with the disappointment of lower grades and still decide instantly on what their next steps should be.

I thought someone last year said that the universities got the results on the Sunday before as the admissions tutors etc needed to see who they would admit despite not meeting their offer and of course compiling their list for clearing. I would imagine this takes a few days

checked on student room here and they advise that Unis get the result on the Sunday before (as pointed out by goinggetstough )
However clearing itself opens mid July (according to the student room)

Uni officer told me they get the results on Sunday and start looking at them on the Monday - they consider all those who have just missed their firm offer and tell ucas who they will take despite missing their grades. The A grades go out electronically on the Wednesday to the schools and the schools give them out on Thursday 18, but some people late on Wednesday eve/early thurs can see on the Ucas site if they have got their offer (but not their actual grades).

Tell him to call on Monday morning - we have people working on Sunday all day when we get the results and decisions will be made on Sunday. And ask to speak to the admissions officer for his course - not just the person on the phone who will in all likelihood be a temp.

Ahhhh. Assume your French student is an IB kid? Just to let you know that, from past experience, universities still don't let you know decisions until A-level day- even if you are an IB student and thus have been sitting on your results for a month. There probably isn't an official policy so it's worth a shot, but don't get his hopes up!

Last year, results day was on the Tuesday. Schools received the results the day before and universities the Friday before.

There are also major extenuating circumstances because the subject he missed his offer in, Maths, had a big problem this year as one of the four questions was leaked. Hence that question was not taken into the equation ie examinees got marked on 3 rather than 4 questions.

Results out Thursday 18th (not 19th) and Unis do get them the week before. A bit anxious as one of DS's subjects was maths which was one of the papers that had the huge problems with it (impossible question) so waiting nervously to see what his grade is

IME when my DDs logged onto their UCAS page, the morning the results came out, they saw if they had been accepted or otherwise before collecting their actual results.

I start a 12 month sabbatical at a university next week (I am usually a secondary teacher) and I can confirm the university will have the A-level results on the sunday. They won't talk to anyone prior to the official release though (or at least we won't) so he may need to wait until the morning of the 18th.

Last year A Level results were on the Thursday with universities receiving them on Sunday and schools on Wednesday. It's the same every year.

I'd have thought that IB students who already have their results would have to wait until Thursday 18th to speak to universities about the availability of places in order to put them on the same footing as A Level students.

My niece was in this position two years ago and wrote to her department after IB results and before A Level results, having just missed her offer, but the department wouldn't communicate until the A Level results were known to the students.

My candidate narrowly missed his offer for Imperial and greatly exceeded his offer for Bath (his insurance offer). The first thing he did when he got his results (French bac) was to ring Bristol, where he had declined an offer, and ask whether he couldn't change his mind and make Bristol his insurance instead. Bristol agreed immediately, and he let Bath know. Imperial told him he'd had have to wait until they'd received A-level results to know whether they had space to reconsider him.

So universities definitely do talk to candidates who have results out before A-levels!
