Relocating from Norfolk to Yorkshire!

Hello! I am possibly moving from my homeland Norfolk to Yorkshire with my partners job, I'm freaking out a little as I've never moved from here before!! & with 2 littles it's even more important to find the right area. Any Yorkshire experts out there? We need to be within 30 ish miles of Normanton which is where his job will be, I don't want to be too isolated but don't necessarily want the hustle and bustle of a massive town, it's really important tho that I make some friends and get involved in a community & also my boy will be starting school next year so need a lovely primary school too... Too much to ask?!?! Thanks xx

I live in yorkshire now, but grew up in Norfolk, the big difference for me is how busy and full yorkshire is.
The other thing is travelling thirty miles or so in Norfolk seems fine- I did it to college on the bus and thought nothing of it, but in yorkshire the traffic is so bad you might not think it's doable on a daily basis.
Trying not to be too negative I know loads of people think it's great.

Well at least it's honest :D Yh I had seen in other places that certain areas get really clogged up with traffic etc, it has to be right for his commute but also for our family life, difficult eh!!! I really don't want to move from here but trying to be positive about it :/

There are some nice places, of course.
I live north of Leeds so don't know the wakefield/ normanton very well. I only go that way for Ikea!
Have you tried posting on mumsnet local?

Firefly Congrats on your move! I'd try and go local if poss, as travel's a nightmare. Normanton itself is nice enough but if you have a bit more to spend then Ackworth or are lovely and both have nice primary schools. PM me if any questions. I moved up to the area from down south a few years ago so have got a fair bit of experience I can share

Come and live near me! I'm about 30 mins/20 miles from Normanton, road traffic hugely improved by the new M1 Smart Motorway around Wakefield. I travel east past Normanton on the M62 several times a week.

I'm in the countryside between Wakefield/Barnsley/Huddersfield - all about 8 miles away, with lots going on for children and families (and adults!) in each (my DC are 4 and 7). 3 tier (First, Middle, High) school system, of which the schools involved are largely Outstanding or Very Good. No pressure on places either (DD's incoming Reception class has spare places); reasonable house prices (you'll easily get 3 beds for £200K, and 4 bed at a stretch); its really a string of villages, some quite large (Denby Dale, Skelmanthorpe) which all have lots going on (we are never at a loss of things to do, DS does different activities every night!); easy access to countryside if that's your things - bike rides, walks, exploring the woods etc) and easy access (by car at least. public transport exists but isn't great, although do-able to some places) to the towns I mentioned and a but further to Leeds, Sheffield and Manchester too. Also Penistone (Tesco, Cinema, Grammar School) and Holmfirth (slightly hippy, lots of independent shops) - smaller market towns, locally.

We came here as a stop gap 16 years ago, and now can't imagine living anywhere else.

Anyway, it's the HD8/WF4 postcode around Denby Dale/Clayton West/Skelmanthorpe/Shepley I am urging you to look at.

+1 for Ackworth we used to live there. It is nice, also handy for travel (by road - not so much by train). There are some nice more rural villages between Ackworth and the A1 if that's what floats your boat. Also Hull way is more like Norfolk in terms of being flat and dispersed villages but travel on the M62 would not be good. That said if you don't mind travelling in Norfolk the smaller roads should be fine.

North Yorkshire and it really is a beautiful part of the world - so many lovely things to do , endless days out for the children, so much history, amazing food, lovely shopping in York - it's fab!

Can't comment on Yorkshire but popping on to say that we are seriously considering relocating to Norfolk from the South Coast! My partners family live up there.

We live beside the M1 on the Wakefield / Barnsley border and love it. 20 minutes from Leeds, 30 from Sheffield. Bordering countryside but close to everything. Best of both worlds.

Our catchment schools are brilliant and there's always loads going on.

Netherlands is lovely op. My cousin works at the primary school

Bus links are reasonable for commuting, or getting to the train, and it's a really nice 'community' village iyswim.

Not sure of one near Holmfirth, there's one in HD4, think it's nice with a lovely little Primary school but the Secondary school would probably be Colne Valley which was in Special measures recently (and might still be)
