Yesterday i went to a pub with my 2 week old to meet a friend and have lunch he was sleeping soundly. Anyway when i told my oh he complained saying that i shouldnt of taken him out that early to a pub and now he might end up catching germs and diseases that are going around! Now i am really worried about it i.e flu, whooping cough, :/ seriously I am scared to take him out again after that!! Was i wrong for taking him out so early?

I took my 2 day old on the school run in February! She is a healthy 9 months old... nothing to worry about... is he normally worried about germs etc?

Congratulations on your baby x

Well to be honest, if it was a quiet pub in the afternoon for a bit of lunch with a friend, I don't see the problem.

I was taking mine around shopping centres at two weeks. You take the baby to the Drs and see the hv-those places are full of people who are ill!!!

I wouldn't worry.

Has he done this sort of thing re you before; pulling you up on going out without him?.

He is being ridiculous here as well as controlling; its very low of him to use his child to get back at you. Germs are all around us. I do not think he wanted you to go out and meet your friend.

Whereas I probably wouldn't have taken my two week old to the pub personally, simply because I'd have been too knackered, I don't really see the issue here or what the risk is, babies aren't puppies who have to stay home till they get their injections,

I took my 1 day old ( yes ONE day old) to a large shopping centre.
He was much smaller than we thought/were told he would be and he needed some tiny baby clothes.
It didn't occur to me to stay at home whilst DP went so we both went!

He was absolutely fine, don't stress OP

Your OH is overreacting. Baby will be fine.

I was really hysterical about my baby before all his jabs were completed. Even now at 9 months I'm not keen on taking him to soft play as I know he'll put disgustingly germy things in his mouth. I would worry about having him in a pub or restaurant though. I think your DP is being a bit OTT.

I didn't know babies were supposed to be kept inside for the first two weeks of their life! How inconvenient.

Don't worry about it - unlikely that your baby will have picked up anything. Think of it as building up his immune system :) Life doesn't come to a standstill when you've had a baby.

Trifleorbust · 01/11/2016 09:54

Some people think babies should be inside for the first 2 weeks or so. I'm sure he wasn't trying to be controlling and was just concerned. Reassure him that the baby will be fine and was, I assume, just sleeping quietly Grin

Does he usually try to control what you do?

Report
hellsbellsmelons · 01/11/2016 09:58

Tell him to get over himself.
Blimey, what's he gonna be like when you have to take him to the doctors for jabs etc....?
There are loads of sick people there.
Nothing at all to worry about.
Do NOT listen to him, he knows nothing!

Attila how on earth you can construe what looks like slightly over zealous but perfectly normal parental concern as controlling I have no idea. OP is it your/his first ? In that case probably a bit of PFB stuff going on, but I suspect the baby will be and is just fine , also start as you mean to go on ie getting out and spending time with your friends Smile

I asked my doctor about germs and going out when DD was tiny (this was in the states) and she said just don't let someone with a cold etc kiss or sneeze on my baby. Seems quite good advice.

DeleteOrDecay · 01/11/2016 10:02

There's nothing wrong with that at all. Your oh is being ridiculous. Pay no mind to it.

Well other posters have used the word control in respect of him so I do not think I am that wide of the mark here.

I think when each of my kids were 2 weeks old the local pub was probably cleaner/tidier than my house!

I took my 8 day old for a pub lunch. Can't see his problem.

Report
BonusNewt · 01/11/2016 10:11

With DS1 I wouldn't even go on a bus with him for ages because TEH GERMS. DS2 on the other hand obviously had to fit in with what we were already doing so came to a toddler group at about 5 days old. That's way more germy than a pub. There was no noticeable difference in their health!

I took my one week old to a huge church service.
He's almost 10 now.

I think it may just be a culture and experience clash. In my family, babies weren't taken into busy places until they were a bit older. In DH's family, babies were in busy environments almost from birth. Neither attitude is wrong, just different.

As PP said, if this wasn't your first born but a subsequent child, they would have gone on the school run, being to playgroup and what not.
Because life can't just stop once a baby is born.

Your baby was safely tucked in his pram. He didn't touch anything from the pub, he was absolutely fine.
And your DP is overreacting.

I would want to ask him though how he thinks you should spend yur days? At home, never going out (not even to th supermarket - too many people therefore too many germs isn't there?) until the child is ... 2 yo and has had all their immunisations, incl the MMR?

I didn't know babies were meant to stay inside for 2 weeks!

We went into town yesterday with 6 day old DS and are going to get out somewhere every day this week so that we make the most of DH being off work. Surely the amount of visitors we have had coming and going at home is just as much of a risk?

No you were not wrong and I'm sorry your OH put that worry in your head.
If it was really an unsafe thing to do then all new parents would be warned.

Babies are tiny and vulnerable but taking them out is good (for you both!).
I hope you had a nice lunch.
