I keep seeing this program advertised on TV. You cannot open a magazine or paper without seeing it advertised. It's unavoidable.
But I'm thinking hmm not sure about watching this one. Too much potential for triggering bad memories Sad

Lots of people on Relationships have been burnt by affairs, so surely I'm the only one not looking forward to it? Are there others feeling this way? Or am I being silly?
Prepared to accept I am. Being silly that is.

No. People who have affairs are in a hormonal mental health crisis imho. If I want to watch that type of thing I would watch psycho or nightmare on Elm Street.

i have experienced, firsthand, the true ugly fallout from an affair. That's why I can't stand to see it glamorized in any way.

Haven't seen it or heard of it. Maybe Im oblivious to advertising. Doesn't sound like my kind of thing though.

Watch it before you judge it... I've seen the first two episodes and it's a really good drama with excellent actors. I don't think the affair is glamorized particularly. As for hormonal mental health crisis just a bit of a harsh generalization

I watched the two first episodes too. It's very well acted and doesn't paint either of them in glory or glamourise affairs. It's interesting how they have done it from both their points of view as they both paint themselves as the innocent, chased one.

The whole point of the story is a murder though, the affair is just a story telling tool IMO.

not seen it advetised, when is it on

I have seen too many people lose their rational mind because of an affair hormone rush. They go into fantasy and selfish mode all over sex, secrets, lies and doing wrong like kids smoking in the bike sheds at school.Confused

Agree BPeas about the points of view, not sure yet if a murder but something bad has definitely happened!

It's not glamourised I don't think. I think drama can show just how least and hurtful an affair can be. A cautionary tale, if you like.

I think it's the title that puts me off. Hmm

Yes, it has an affair in it, but why call it The Affair?

I recently watched a film about two characters dying of cancer, but the film wasn't called Cancer. If it was, it would be too upsetting to too many people. So even though the film centred around that one particular theme, they had the sensitivity to call it something else.

The title of this program makes me uneasy and I suspect will be upsetting and triggering to a lot of people

what do you suggest they call it?

Report
jenenberry · 19/05/2015 00:14

I'm sure they could have thought of something else.

The film I'm referring to about was called The Fault in our Stars. It wasn't called The Deaths

I haven't heard anything about it. It doesn't sound something Id watch though, Im simply not interested in watching affairs unravelling and the aftermath. I don't want to know. You could watch a weekly soap opera for all that then again, I find them uninteresting and uninspiring too.

I've seen the whole series and it is excellent, highly recommended.

I have watched the whole series - it really is excellent. The affair is the glue that holds a much wider story together.....by the end of the season, it's more of a crime drama (you get that in the first episode, so not a spoiler, don't worry!) It tells the story from two people's perspective, without explanation or an attempt to reconcile, and this is pretty interesting in itself.

I think it's a bit much to talk about adultery as being 'triggering' - while I understand that it can cause devastation, and is traumatic, it is also common in life, often discussed and portrayed in the media, and in many (most?) cases not abusive.

I was more upset by what has happened to the woman in the series. Maybe that should have been in the title too as a warning!
This is a strange thread, but interesting to see how different people look at things.

I've seen the whole of the first series and it is brilliantly acted and a gripping story - I wasn't sure about it because of the title, either, but as pp have said above, it is so much more than that. Finding it quite funny that both lead characters (American) are played by British actors. I don't remember having seen either of them before and they were both revelations. Can't wait for the second series!
