There's a huge utility room which the washer fridge etc will be placed

Could you afford a small extension. The kitchen is a bit long and narrow as it is now. Or do some replanning if there is also a large utility room.

Do you need the kitchen stools? if not

I'd be inclined seeing as you are losing stuff into the utility, to put in an L shape of units with wall units on the one wall opposite the window and leave the wall where the washing machine is now.

That would mean losing the radiator but you could put in a myson plinth heater which would run off your central heating.

Then where the breakfast bar/stools are I'd have floor to ceiling cupboards

You can also get free layout ideas by going to Howdens/magnet/B&Q etc. I am literally just about to have a kitchen by Second Nature who would also do you a free layout etc and give ideas on to what might fit where.

@Furball No we'll be ripping the breakfast bar out and using that space for kitchen cupboards etc,

Some good points

Thank you

I would be knocking into the utilty. They only work if you have a decent sized kitchen.

Yeah it’s a difficult space (unless you like cooking on your own and don’t really want to socialise in the kitchen- it’s not for everyone). Do you want to eat in there or just cook/wash up etc? What do you want from the space and how would you want to use it day to day?

Does the room end where the breakfast bar is? Can we see a floor plan? You might get a table in at that end by using bench seating all the way around? Then I would probably do a full wall of tall larder units at the other end and keep the sink in a run of units where it is.
I would definitely see what Howdens etc suggest, even if you know you’re not buying from them!

Thanks guys, we have a dining room so no need for a table in the kitchen, a full wall of units sounds good too.

@chickensafari we cook mostly so would be used for cooking, dining room for sitting, just need to make the most of it really with the small space we have

I'd consider moving the kitchen into the dining area and then putting French doors where the current back door is and making that the dining area.

Could you switch and use the dining room as the kitchen? Seems slightly bigger? Would also be handy being nearer utility/larder rather than having to walk through dining room each time you needed something.

With that floor plan I would move the kitchen into the dining area - near the utility room and have built in seating done in the kitchen area to create a dining area and maybe put in French doors to the outside

Move the door for the living room and go through the cupboard under the stairs.

The fridge in the utility? Won't that drive you mad?

I'd do as PP suggests and swap kitchen and dining room over and I'd know jnto utility.

Kitchen needs to go dining area
Otherwise you will need a fridge in the kitchen and you will be eating next to a spin cycle!

That layout doesn’t flow

Is there money in the budget to move the kitchen? The cost is in moving the drainage etc I think. It would make things easier using the dining room.
If not you can definitely make it work I think, especially if you have a utility. It’s narrow but not too narrow if it’s just being used for cooking and washing up. The link through to the rest of the house is good and you seem to have plenty of storage space elsewhere so you’ll only need space for everyday items in the kitchen area.

I came on to say the same thing as others about swapping the kitchen and dining room around. I was also going to say that I would put a door between the current utility room and the hall otherwise you’ve got to walk all the way around the house to get to the kitchen.

There will presumably already be plumbing in the utility so should be too difficult I wouldn't expect. Move the kitchen to the dining room.

If you can't move the kitchen to dining room, do this. Red circle is hob with oven under.

But without measurements I can't tell if there is space for the fridge where is put FF.

I think for now (with our budget) we're just going to have to stick with keeping the kitchen as it is for now, but maybe in the future we could convert the dining room into the official kitchen.

Some good suggestions though, thank you for the replies

I didn't even know you could use websites to plan the kitchen without purchasing!

Also I think we'll have to get a small under counter fridge for the kitchen and then maybe a bigger fridge freezer in the utility? I dunno arggffh

I think I'd at least get a quote for moving the kitchen into the dining area. A new kitchen costs a fair bit. And it might not cost as much extra as you think to move it round. Because all the old units will be stripped out anyway..

Report
Whythesadface · 13/06/2021 16:29

If you swapped the kitchen door so it opened the other way you could put a fridge there, or maybe do a barn door and gain space that way. It doesn't cost that much.
