Removals cost? (past 12 months)

Can I ask those of you who moved in the past 12 months what your paid for your removals service?

We're moving a (full) 2 bed terrace 2 miles up the road and the first quote has come in at £950 for removals and £550 for packing. Does this seem about right? We're waiting on 3 more quotes. I had thought it would be nearer £1200.

I’m actually in the removals industry. Have done hundreds of quotes. What part of the country are you in? How many steps to the front door on each house? Do you have a shed? Full? What’s the parking like and what needs dismantling and rebuilding? I will give you a rough quote.

Sounds pricey to me. We're in Cheshire and just moved from a three bed mews to a house ten miles away and it cost £450. Plus £180 for them to pack.
£450 included dismantling beds and supplying all boxes.

Just moved from South East England to Wales. £1500 including packing. One bed flat with masses of stuff.

Quotes can vary a lot though. I had one for £2500 so shop around!

We moved middle of last year, from a two bed terrace, and about a twenty minute drive. We had the kitchen packed and the move included a playhouse and the contents of a shed (2 x 7.5t lorries), four men in packing day, three in moving day. SE England. £980 all in (extra £30 for loan of boxes).

We had quotes as low as £680 for ‘man with a can’ set-ups, through to about £1400. Ours was a proper removal firm with several lorries, but still a relatively small company.

£1300 for move from 5 bed to 3 bed. S East and 12 miles. I did my own packing. Used a small ( though not cheap) family business

Hmmm yes I'll definitely shop around. Got another quote due tomorrow so it will be good to compare.

@natnat84 we're in Staffordshire. Our current house has one step down out of it and the van would literally be able to pull up by the house (it's a terraced house) so just a couple of steps to the van. The new house is on an estate with a standard drive. Easy parking and maybe ten steps to the front door if they choose to park on the road rather than the drive. Nothing overly difficult.
We've cleared out the shed and will be taking a lawn mover, couple of rakes/spades, a two seater garden bench, garden table and 4 chairs plus 6 normal size plant pots. Inside we have nothing in the loft. Main items are 2 sofas, washer, dryer, fridge freezer, sk bed, cot bed, small Welsh dresser, 4 door wardrobe and 2 x 2 door wardrobes, 1 x 4 drawer chest of drawers. The beds and 4 door wardrobe would need dismantling.

£1400, moving from a 3 bed (with shed plus basement room so quite a lot of stuff!) to a 5 bed less than a mile away.

Included all reassembly of flatpack furniture. Fully packed. Local company who take great pride in their reputation & protecting it - and were amazing.

Had another identical quote from another local company, pickfords quoted £2k then hassled for ages after I said I wasn't going to use them.

Ezs23 that sounds like a very straight forward move under 1200cube to me. ( unless you’ve kept every family heir loom since the 1600’s) I would probably quote an all in price (move, pack, materials, inc and vat) at something like 1000. Shop around. Make sure you use bar registered company and I’d recommend going on really moving.com . You’ll get a few calls offering quotes, get about 3/4 different quotes and remember to tell each estimator/surveyor that you’re getting multiple quotes as they will be more competitive. Sounds like the company that quoted you is going for a very wide margin and frankly taking the p£&@ if they are unethical at this stage and willing to rip you off , just imagine how much fun they would be to deal with if you need to make an insurance claim? Get on a comparison website and google reviews like your life depends on it. Good luck

£1200 to pack up three bed flat in London and move halfway across the country. Yours seems high.

Ours was £1200 to move a very full 3 bed to new house down the round. Included packing and all boxes

£1100 inc packing and VAT to move 1 mike from a 5 bed to a 4 bed with a flight of steps up to the front door at the new house. The packing element was around £250 and included all materials.

Thanks everyone, this has been really useful. I'd originally guesstimated £850 for removals bringing it up to £1200 with packing which seems reasonable based on your experiences. Hopefully the other quotes will be nearer to this.

@natnat84 thanks for that. They're a local independent company that have good Facebook reviews etc and have been ringing me every week for the past two months wanting to quote me (I filled something in online ages ago). I thought I'd let them quote as they seemed to want the business so I hoped for a good price. I forgot to mention, we will be moving on a Monday or Tuesday so not peak days. I've got two well known local removers quoting me this week along with pickfords. Thanks so much for giving me an idea of a ballpark figure to work towards.

I recommend posting on anyvan.
Got a large van load of stuff (all of the contents of our one bed flat minus the bed) moved 40 miles for £86. That was just over 12 months ago.

Did you haggle at all? My friend has suggested I should try and haggle whichever company we decide on but is this the done thing? I don't want to p*ss them off when they're going to be handling all our possessions!

No I didn't haggle just waited for the quotes to roll in on any van.
I wouldn't haggle in a situation where I had to get a quote, tbh. Seems wrong to me

It’s absolutely fine to haggle. I would regularly get clients coming back to me saying something like “we’re really impressed by the service you offer and have found your staff really helpful but we’ve been quoted by another local company who’ve come in x amount cheaper, is there anything you can do? “ i’d Look back at the quote and the date they were moving and try to give them a discount if it wasn’t a very busy day. It is the ‘done thing’ and it’s fine. Anyvan can be a bit of a gamble as any two blokes can meet in a pub, lease a van and get g.i.t insurance and call themselves a removal company. Just proceed with caution if you go down that route.

We've had some (what I think) are really expensive quotes. We're looking at moving from a 2 bed to a new one half a mile down the road. Only taking a few pieces of furniture- 2 beds, 2 sofas, dining table and about 20 boxes that we have packed ourselves- quotes £1200?!

I used a Staffordshire company to move from a 2 bed flat to a 2 bed house down the road last year. Paid £200 for 2 men and 2 vans, they dismantled and reassembled the wardrobe. It took 4 hours. The guys were brilliant, if you want a recommend send me a message :)
