Did anyone hire packers and movers? If so, how much did they charge?

We're thinking we'd be better off hiring someone to pack our house when we move (kids, pets, loads of work on, etc).

But no idea if it'll be too expensive.

Did anyone do it? Was it worth it? And I'd love to know how much it cost?!

The move isn't far, just a couple of miles, but london.

I will dig out our quote to pack up a shameful amount of stuff but it was laughably small for the effort they saved us.

Do it!!! By the time you have had a couple of takeaways and bottles of wine at London prices and taken a day of work because of the packing you will have spent more than you would on the packers. Truly a false economy not to, unless you don't have the money.

I used packers as our son is young & autistic, he would not have understood a slow pack with boxes around the house for a few weeks (and would probably have tried to unpack them again).

Having used them once, I'll never go back to packing myself again! What they did in less than a day, would have caused me heaps of work and annoyance for weeks ...

It was £450 for our move, and about £350 for the packing service the previous day - 2 bed semi.

We were quoted £700 for the move and and another £500 for packing. We did it ourselves in the end

About 350 for a 4 bed house including a loft. We lived as normal until 27 hours before we were leaving which is perfect with little dc.

Removals £1200, packing £350 for a 4-bed house. Dismantling beds would have been £180 but we chose to do that ourselves. Unpacking would have been another £350 but we did that ourselves too. It was definitely worth it, I've had packers twice now. Unpacking might also be worth it if you're ok for storage in the new house, we were not unfortunately so lots of things had to stay packed while we assembled wardrobes, shelving etc.

I've always had packers and movers because firstly the army paid and I always seemed to have newborn babies plus others. I wrapped and packed my precious items, sorted through drawers and cupboards and did a tip trip (many tip trips actually). They were always brilliant. They even thoughtfully wrapped and packed a nappy. That was delightful opening that a week later! 🤢

Sorry, the info you actually asked for. Our last move (non-military) from south UK to south Scotland for three children and two adults (five bedrooms two receptions) was £1200 five years ago.

We paid £1k in london, 4 bed house, for movers and packers. But did masses of decluttering first.

I can't remember the cost of packing, but we've been packed twice and it was worth every penny!

We're about to pay £815 for packing and moving in the south east. Can't remember the breakdown of cost but larger proportion was for moving rather than packing. Worth every penny!

Moved from a 3 bed house to a 4 bed house in Scotland. £600 for moving, and an extra £275 for packing. Best money I've ever spent, wouldn't hesitate to do it again. I'd have spent the extra on packing materials alone.

Thank you Summery for this thread. I've been trying to get a ballpark figure for a two-bed pack and move from London to Thanet but It's like pulling teeth. I now have at least some idea. Flowers

Ours was £1200 - moved from a 3 bed house with huge cellars and garage to a 4 bed with cellar and garage. Awkward access at our new place which meant a Luton and transits were used to shuttle up from the huge wagon on the main road. Took a day and half for them to pack before moving day. Well worth it.

We're paying an extra £360 for them to do all our packing and taking down beds (and putting them up again in new house), and it's worth every penny in my opinion!

East Midlands £200 for packing 4 bed 3 recep house. Removal involved storage costs so not easy to advise, depends on how far you're going.

We've only ever used that service where it's been paid by dh's company so I'm not sure on price but unless there's no way we could afford it privately, I will NEVER pack/move/unpack again. It was marvellous. Worth every single penny if you have the pennies to spend.

Paying for packing was my non-negotiable item when we moved last year. I made that crystal clear after the last time when I did 90% of the packing as DP works away a lot. Never again.

Do! Its not much more than the price for do it yourself, and what would take you weeks they can do in a couple of days max.

I think I paid £350 out of a total move cost of £1100 - best thing ever!! I was 8 months pregnant but even so would definitely use it again.

We paid about £900 for a local move in London. Totally, totally worth it - I'll never do it any other way again. PM me if you'd like movers' details - would be delighted to recommend them.

I paid £600 for removals and it was £200 for packing which I did myself in the end BUT I was seriously downsizing so had got rid of a lot of furniture and also left the kitchen appliances eg American fridge, dishwasher, washing machine.

I had had a previous quote for £200 more.

I also looked at online reviews which was helpful.

Yes I would pay for packing if I did it again as I was on my knees by moving day with all the chucking, sorting, packing and cleaning.

If you can afford it, do it. Just make sure they label boxes really accurately. Really helps the other end.
