Alternative to interior sliding doors?

Bumpy bus journey!
We are knocking the living and dining room into one and are looking for a door or system to enable us to partition the rooms if needed. Any good alternatives to sliding doors (we do not have enough wall space for these). Has anyone used accordion doors? Thanks.

Watching with interest - looking for something similar that looks good closed and opens as widely as possible !

I am not a fan of sliding doors as it looks too office-like. I was thinking of this myself a while ago and my preference would be bifold or four-fold white doors.

A lighter option could be Ikea panels.

I used sets of B & Q glazed bifold doors quite successfully, though they weren't for the whole width of a room, more like a 6 foot gap.

We had glazed accordion doors between dining & living space & they were great. We had a little screw lock thing to keep them in place when closed & a little latch thing when they were open. When opened they sat 50/50 into each room but against walls where they didn't cause any obstruction.
We installed before DC so didn't consider safety glass then had to stick safety film on later - looked rubbish.
They were pretty basic ones but I think still looked great (before safety film!).

Barn doors take up less space methinks. Would this be a consideration. To my eye they look great.

The wall either side of the opening is not long enough for sliding or barn doors (I agree barn doors have a lot of character). Interior bifolding doors would be too imposing too I think. The ones I have seen have quite wide panels. I like how compact accordion doors are once shut, but I have yet to come across one that looks attractive. I'd love to use something reclaimed with a bit of character or history...

Could you get a carpenter to put something together for you if you're after an aged wood effect? No idea what the cost would be.

That's not a bad idea, MammyKaz. They would need to be pretty skilled though to make sure that the mechanism works and remains operational. It is probably quite a fiddly job.

Mine were this kind of size & structure. Is it the same interpretation of accordion as you?
For a carpenter, or even furniture maker, I think it's more about the framing & fitting hinges (?). The fitting of the doors may have to be someone else like a builder - maybe they do the hinges as well as the & rails. We had a top & bottom rail.

My builder got them for me in my last house about 5-6 years ago. Sorry I can't remember where & we're no longer in that part of the country - no help at all . I'll try a search see if I can come up with anything

I was considering this for a while.

Decided not to in the end but Sliderobes are what I was looking at. They are called sliding room dividers I think.

These would probably need a little imagination to get them how you would like them but is the sizing about right? Add in a couple more doors to extend, paint & distress (chalk paint) & nice hinges could make a difference. ????

Depending on size of opening, two standard size bi-fold doors could work and would be a cheaper option.
I'd love to put doors in the opening we have in our open plan downstairs but the gap is an odd size and no standard sized sliding or bi-fold doors will fit it. We can't alter it as too costly and messy, even if possible, which isn't certain.

Ideally the narrower the panels, the better as we do not want them to be imposing when folded away.
Good point about the door width too. I should make sure we go for an opening size that can be bridged with standard doors.
DH has something like this in mind. Good acoustic properties and folds away nicely but I am not sure I like how it looks...

Agree Kefy I wouldn't be sure about the look either, looks a bit conference/banqueting hall like. Noise control was fine, we'd often sit with friends whilst DC watched tv literally the other side of the doors. Of course you could hear it but not enough to disturb conversation.
They folded very neatly, especially with the little latch thingy to keep them from moving. Hope you find something!!
