What has your child learned in their first week of reception?

My dd2 says she has learned 100 letters of the alphabet, and she now knows more letters than her big sister (who's in yr 2).

She has also learned that hippos live in forests.

DD has learnt what an assembly is, and that she can go to the toilet by herself.

She was suitably unimpressed by the fact that she has been there 3 days and cannot read yet

Dd2 has learned that she really, really, really, really loves the girl who lives round the corner .

Am fairly certain dd has learnt nothing. They have just played. An outrage in my opinion - where's the spelling tests and times tables learning.

On a practical level she has learnt where her peg is, what to do with her water bottle and book bag and the names of her teachers. I expect they'll start the times tables next week .

According to the letter I got they have been doing 3 letter sounds and the numbers 1-10

Plenty of artwork seems to have been produced

They also went to the library and had french, music and dance

I have one picture (a recognisable boat!) on the fridge
Had to carry home a book we have in the bookcase
only one person in the class has spoken to/played with dc

My DD learnt (last year) that she was the only child not to have had a doudou (comforter) and bottle. The teacher was doing a project to wean the children off comforters and bottles, but we had to go out and buy a bottle for DD, who felt deprived!

Nothing, according to dd. In fact, she says all she has done since Wednesday is fall over in the playground and graze her knees and hands!

How to be confident! I'm so pleased! They've been working really hard on his self esteem, (he had a bad time at nursery) and he's come home with stickers most days and on Wednesday a very prized Head Teacher's award that is now stuck on his pyjamas. He's also done loads of art, made porridge for Goldilocks and the Three Bears and apparently he can now write!

We asked my nephew this after his first day at school. "The teacher writes letters on the board and then we have to guess what they are", he replied.

Can someone explain what 'reception' is, how old are the children and is it compulsory to go? Just curious as to how it differs from the Scottish system.

reception is the first year at school children are 4-5 and you have to go the term ater your 5th birthday (I think)

hairyMaclary That is what has happened in my DS school too, he also had a bad time at nursery (it was like a prison scentence for him) But so far so good am chuffed His table got table of the week last week!!

We went back on Monday and one mum was going to rip the teachers head off because her DS didn't get the fun size bag of malteasers that the other children got (four to a table)

She ranted and raved about it in the playground, when the DC came out she scarpered,.....wooooose!!

ds1 has only been for one morning but he has already learnt that:

someone knows his name (he doesn;t know theirs, he thinks theyt are a girl because they "talked girl" to him, but he isn't sure)

that there isn't any point naming stick insects because they all look the same

that there are actually other children who go to his school!!! who'd have thunk it?

oh we're missing our nursery it was beyond fab... school is very average IMHO

DS has learned that dinosaurs are instinct, which means dead.

DS has learned that "that lady" is in fact his teacher.

I have learned that Howie is in fact Harry. Thankfully before I wrote the Christmas cards or the party invitations.
