How much do TA's get paid during the summer holidays???

I am currently a cover TA through a Temping agency. They're great and find me plenty to do, but I only get paid for the time that I work and during the holidays, I receive literally no money. I'm not complaining, but I would like to know if permanent TA's get paid through the holidays.

Also, every time I see a job it says "14,500 pro-rata" this usually means that if you work 25 hours instead of 40, you get 25/40ths of the advertised wages. What does it mean when a TA post is advertised???

you get the same pay in August as other months as the pay is evenly distributed over 12 months.
It's great being paid in August when you haven't been at work Grin

Your annual pay is split into 12 and so you get paid every month. Same as teachers.

I have a permanent contract.
I am paid pro rata - ie only for the hours I work, so no pay for holidays.

It also nothing like the salary that is advertised for the job - always take that into consideration when looking. Usually temp TAs get a higher daily rate than permanently emloyed ones.

However, my pay is divided into 12 equal payments, so I recieve the same amount of money in school holidays as I do in term time.

Hi Hulababy,

So if you worked - lets say - 3 hours a day, 5 days a week, then you'd earn 60 hours pay a month, but then you'd be paid less than 60 hours per month each month, but it would be each month - ie during summer.

Yes, that's it.

So my contract is for xx number of hours a week.
This is then worked out at xxx number of hours per acadmic year (so xxx * 39 weeks)

So - say I do 25 hours a week - this is then 975 hours a year.

I get paid for those hours, divided over 12 monthly pay packets.

Mine is VERY completicated tbh.

I do 16 hours of my job at HLTA rate and the rest at Level 3 TA rate. So working out the pro rata for both of those - and then working out the mnthly wage - I never really know how much I should be getting tbh! Especially as I do the odd hour or two extra every few weeks or so - but I usually don't get paid for them til a month later.

TAs are generally on term time contracts but averaged over 12 months so get a pay cheque each month. But for NI and pension you do not get a full years contribution you only get the c. 36 weeks a year you work.

It isn't the same as teachers, teachers are on a full year contract so get pay, NI and pension for the whole year.

Our TAs are salaried so their annual salary is divided by 12 and they are paid every month even during holidays (in the same way as teachers). So in my area generally the advertised pay scale is what you can expect.

Hulababy I thought under the workforce agreement schools weren't meant to be paying 2 different rates for anyone undertaking HLTA role.

I get paid for (I think) 43.26 weeks per year - term time is 39 weeks, so the rest is holiday pay.

I work 17 hours a week and take home just over £500 per month. I am paid for 44 weeks per year (after 10 years service).

Not a lot for what a TA is now expected to do really is it?

You should be getting holiday pay though, that's a legal requirement?

I employ 8 staff who work term time only and I have to pay them 12.07% of their salary as holiday pay. So I work out how many hours a year they work x hourly rate x 1.1207 and then divide it by 12 so they get the same each month.

And a pro rata salary is usually for 52 weeks and 37.5 hours a week. So to calculate for 20 hours a week and 39 weeks a year you would do £14,000 x 39/52 x 20/37.5 = £5,600 per year. You the have to account for the holiday. Legal minimum of 28 days per year is the 12.07% as above. So your annual salary would be £6,276 = £523 per month. Currently at this level there is no tax to pay - possibly a very small amount of NI, but not more than a couple of pounds a month.

Mrz - apparently it is all fine and legal. Two different roles and define hours/times for each lakes it ok apparently.

In Sheffield Lea the advertised rates in jobs ads is not the received pay. They all say the 12 months FT hour rates with pro rata after it. Obv it's then reduced to 39 weeks and x number of hours - can't remember the FT is for a week - about 25 hours or so. Don't get paid for lunch or morning break.

TAs and support staff not working 52 wks will still get holiday pay, a legal minimum of 4 wks. So you often get 43-44 weeks pay spread over 12 months.

The current legal minimum holiday is 5.6 weeks. It is pro rated down if you don't work a full year, it's equivalent to 12.07% = (5.6 / (52-5.6)).

In our LA you get the FTE pay rate & multiply it by 0.87 to get the term time only equivalent. Then divide it by 12 to find the monthly gross salary.
Other LAs use slightly different formulae to work it out but that includes statutory holiday pay & is based on a 'full time' job being 35 hours a week.

Just thought I'd add that that I'm sure Agency workers now have a legal entitlement to the statutory minimum (pro-rated) holiday pay entitlement (which becomes effective from the 13th week of employment) so it should be worth checking that out if you don't get a paid day off at all (like me as I'm self-employed!).

If the Agency isn't purely an educational one maybe you could do a different type of job during the school holidays, or use a different type of Agency for those periods?

I've worked as a temp TA employed direct by the school, and always had holiday paid for each hour on my time sheet from the start. Following on from single status, the hourly rate was exactly the same contract/permanent staff

Currently I'm on contract, and I'm paid for 32.5 hours a week for the school term weeks, pro-rata holidays and 5 days inset. This is divided into 12ths. My current contract runs until the end of this term, so I will lose money as I'm paying for an August payment I won't get.

I work as a casual TA at the moment rather than on a contract. I work for 12 hrs a week but I am not needed if the child I support isn't in school. I am paid £8.08 an hour.

In my LA you get paid for 43 or 44 weeks a year (depending on length of service) for 39 weeks of term time. The extra weeks are your holiday entitlement. So to work out your pay it would be, for example

FT annual salary hours worked/37 43/52

(where 37 is FT hours, 52 weeks in a year)

This is then divided by 12 and paid each month through the year.
