Sun oven antics

Not content with a dehydrater, a pressure canner, a Dutch oven and a wonderbag, I also have a sun oven. A cheapo camping one because, y'know, it's the UK and I live near Manchester.
I used it once last year to make some pasta sauce with extra smugness added because they were home grown tomatoes.
Anyhoo, I thought, "it's hot, why not road test it with meat". So I did today using a US recipe which is basically chicken pieces in beer with some garlic and onion. For sandwiches with BBQ sauce.

  1. I'm not dead.
  2. It was pretty nice.

The oven is more of an opened chiller bag that has a plastic front.
Any other general preppers ever tried a sun oven?

Wow - I have never seen one of these. Anyone else used one?

There are far fancier versions @EstherMumsnet and you can make your own. This is a cheapo version.

Though that is more or less what happens to us if we open the kitchen blinds.

Is that 2nd picture of dead mice? Or was that your dinner?

I only caught a few minutes but I think someone was trying to cook with one/something similar on tonights Countryfile, but gave up because it was too overcast.

Thanks for the tip, @HuggedTheRedwoods . That's far fancier than anything I would buy living in the UK. Parabolic dish thing - that's living the dream 😂😂

You're welcome bellini. I'm going to have a proper watch again on iplayer tonight (out of interest only, not enough optimism for solar cooking also living in the North West!).

I saw something on CBBC - Tilda Ramsey cookery show? - where Gordon Ramsey cooked freshly caught fish in a foil packet on a car engine. Not for me .... or is it Grin

I’ve got one of these. Bought it for wild camping holidays so mostly done pretty basic stuff, heating tins of soup, beans etc (can do that without a pan). Going to try popping eggs in their shells directly to see if that cooks them.

A sailing channel I follow uses a more solid metal version on their boat to cook bread and brownies to great success

The metal one is called a Go Sun.

Maybe a silly idea, but I have car windscreen protector thing that looks to be the same material. Do you think that would work? If I cut it and put it on the edges of a cardboard box (I’ve seen DIY cardboard box ones using foil/aluminium sheets etc). And then a large glass lid over the pan?

Maybe i will try it with something safe like a tin of beans - if we ever get any sun again...
