I'm too old to have periods and my dd is too young . But give it ....I dunno .... and she will start. Obviously, it's going to be her choice but if her choice isn't available (where she chooses disposables), I want to make sure we have options. Which means cloth pads at least for a younger girl - mooncup later maybe.
What are your ideas on this? What resources do you know of or already use.
Precious Stars Pads on YouTube is calm, friendly and straight talking. YouTube rabbit hole has also taken me to Flow of the Goddess. Any others?

I'm pretty nifty with a sewing machine (Dad taught me) and she's learning too. DH's mum is pretty handy with a sewing machine too. And we're all pretty good at the basics sewing by hand. Planning to give cloth pads a go.

I have a coil so not an issue and also have a mooncup from previously. But for anyone this would affect I think it would be sensible to have cloth pads.

Washable pads - good for environment too!

I'm currently looking into washable pads. I'd love to be able to make my own. I have a sewing machine (never used) - maybe this would be a good project to start with. But I'm unsure of the type of fabric to use to avoid leakage. Any ideas?

There's loads of info online and pluses and minuses with everything. You can start by looking to reuse materials in clothes you no longer use. I think .
Cotton or flannel cotton for the topper.
Towel for the core and fleece for the bottom.
There are loads of different fabrics options but they could be a start for you.

I've had a look online. Apparently fleece is good to prevent leaks.

It's a really good idea to use old clothes rather than buying new fabric, actually. I have a few boxes of used baby/kid's clothes to sort through, but rather than just taking the lot to the charity shop I may keep a few back to repurpose into pads.

I think the posters on Ethical Living topic would be handy with tips. I've lurked and posted there.

DD has appreciated some leak protection period pants (uses disposable pads currently) as an extra bit of protection. She wears them at night over her normal pants (sized up), now doesn’t have any more leaks. I’ve stored some cloth pads for her but she’s not keen on them unless necessary.

My dd was surprisingly up for it when I broached the subject with her. She liked the idea of completely customising it to suit her. Or rather me doing the sewing with her design. At least to start.

I have endometriosis and an irregular cycle so I keep pretty well stocked. I also have two washable pads (£7 I think from Bloom & Nora) to wear on days where I think it might start, or where I think it’s finished (basically more as liners than relying on them as pads for bleeds).

I have heavy periods and wouldn’t want to use reusable ones on an ordinary basis, but if needs must (and my stocks ran dry) I would probably get the sewing machine out and line a few pairs of swimming bottoms with old towel and a fleece liner (using an old fleece coat or blanket). I have a good stocked rag bag so I’m sure I could fashion up something. Worst case I would just put strips of towel inside a pair of pants and tack them on loosely (so I could pull out the threads to soak the strip separately) like a period belt set of the 1950s (or whenever it was they had those!)

I'm sorry that you have such a rough time. There are patterns for nighttime pads that are also considered suitable for "post partum ". I wonder if they would be a nicer option .
