My birthplan went in the bin shortly after arriving in hospital. Tbh as long as you've got a rough idea in your head about what you want and don't want and your partner knows as well, that's all that's necessary.

Mine was pretty basic. I just put about 5 or 6 things and was half expecting it to get ignored. But actually the midwives all read it first thing when they came in the room and referred to it when explaining why (for example) they thought I should have an episiotomy although I'd said in my birth plan I'd prefer not to have one. Of course at that point I just said "Yes yes whatever! I don't care! Just get it out!"

I think the other things were about wanting to wait for a while before the cord was cut (I'd read that was better for the baby), about dh wanting to cut the cord. Oh and about not wanting an injection to get the placenta out.

Re the injection, that was the other thing I ended up having anyway... reason given was they were worried I was losing a lot of blood quite fast. Who knows if I really needed it or not, but it's one of those situations where you feel you have to trust their word for it!

Hi my birth plans have always been quite detailed although I dont know if they were even ever looked at! Infact with dd I knew it wasn't because it didnt leave my labour bag till after she was born!

I put things like what types of pain relief I was very open minded about and which I wanted to avoid if possible. That I didnt want a cs unless it was really necassary. That dh wasn't to leave the room, that he wanted to cut the cord, that I wanted the baby to be passed straight to me not cleaned first. I did have the injection afterwards that helps the placenta out have had it both times and will have it again.

Trying to rack my brain for anything else....as I have to fill in my birth plan sometime soon, am only 20weeks tho so lots of time left!

oh can i just ask another question.. when ultrasounds are dated.. are they dated from where your lmp would have been or just the fetal age plus 2 weeks to where the lmp should be based on a 28 day cycle? so for example-
if you had a 10 week scan would the fetus be 8 weeks old + 2 weeks for where an average lmp would be
or
if you had a 10 week scan would the lmp have been 10 weeks ago and the fetus was concieved some time after that or is it always 2 weeks? sori if i confused u all haha xxx

i had a scan when i was 8 so was i only really pregnant for 6 weeks here? did i concieve about 6 weeks before that scan, the lmp date they gave me didnt really tie in i think it was about a week before where they think it was but it wasnt a huge diff so i just ignored it lol xxxx

Do they actually read the birthplan? I can't say I noticed anyone reading mine! This time I'm not bothering, as my carefully written and beautifully presented birthplan outlining my wish for a waterbirth resulted in a c-section!

iv heard that most mw are quite respectful of your wishes in the birthplan unless obv its a risk to you or your baby and something else has to be done i dont really mind aslong as the baby gets out okay really theres a few things id rather have though xxx

Mine weren't!

Although it was a very busy night with all sorts going on. The midwives were really stretched and running between women. I really felt for them.

I spent Monday night at Labour Ward and the place was empty. The midwife even made me a cup of tea...and with DS1 I spent a week in hospital and didn't get one miserly cup of tea. What a difference 2 years makes.
