Did anyone have a scan at 6 weeks?

I've got an early scan tomorrow when I will be just 6w 2d. My GP has gone to a lot of trouble to arrange this appointment, which I'm having because of a previous late miscarriage and some slight spotting I've had this time. However, she has me down as almost 7 weeks, based on LMP date, even though I know I ovulated later and am therefore only 6+1 today. I've tried to change the appointment but just cannot get through (Kingston Hospital).

My question is, for those ladies who had early scans: am I really going to get any useful info at such an early stage? I'm aware that a heartbeat at this point is a bit hit and miss and I'm worried if there is not one, it will just stress me out more....arrgh! These first few weeks of pg are such a worry aren't they?

I would love to hear from anyone who had early scans and what, if anything, you were able to see?

I had an early scan because our baby conceived through IVF and they like to check that babe is in the right place and not ectopic before discharging you from the programme. We had a strong heartbeat at six weeks but not much to see other than position and amniotic sac other than that. If you can change it to seven weeks I would but you have a good chance of seeing a heart beat.

yes, I had a dating scan which put me at 6 weeks. there was a yolk sac and a teeny flickery heartbeat. It was very reassuring. but as you rightly say, the heartbeat may not be visible, so don't get worried if you don't see it

I had one at 5 weeks and couldn't see much.

Then one just before 7 weeks and could clearly see a heartbeat.

Best of luck xx

i had early scans with both pregnancies due to having 3 missed miscarriages before. i actually had one at 4 weeks due to abdominal pain. they could only see the sac at that moment so brought me back a week later.the scanner still found it hard to pick up the heartbeat at 5 weeks so she used an internal instument that is more sensitive and that was able to pick up the heartbeat....anyway sorry for going on but at 6 weeks they should be able to see something and if not they may use an internal instrument.......dont worry its absolutely safe for them to do this and its painless )

yes at 6w 3d (exactly had been using OPK).. be warned ... its an internal scan

was able to see a heartbeat (I'd been bleeding) which reassured

If they hadn't been able to find a heartbeat I'd have been told to come back in a week or so and I imagine that week would have been hell on earth

i too had a n early scan for the same reason as you, wavedancer. i was about 6+3 (i think). it completely blew me away. dd looked like a little bean with a fluttery heartbeat and was at the top of things.

whay they basically check is how many babies there are, where they are growing and the heartbeat.

i'm sure you will be fine ((((((((((((((((((wdancer))))))))))))
but take some tissues in case you blown away too

why internal? i had a ultrasound(?) scan - you know- the one with the bloody cold jelly stuff

Report
fingerwoman · 09/07/2007 15:07

round here they always do internal for early scans because they're more likely to pick up on what they want to see.
I suppose because it's closer than doing it through the stomach.
Am surprised you had the regular one but maybe it's just a case of where in the country you are etc etc

Thanks everyone!

I had an internal before (ouch!) after my miscarriage, and I remember making a mental note last time about wearing a skirt in the future. .

fransmom - that's great that you saw a heartbeat so early on - I hope I do too.

I'm actually feeling really nervous about this appointment because I have had no real pregnancy symptoms to speak of and have had some browny discharge, which was the first sign of miscarriage for me last time.

I'm trying to remain positive though!

yeah i had one too but every pregnany is differant...sometimes the sac hasnt totally dissapeared so they need to do an internal one because its more sensitive and can pick up a heartbeat

yes, do be positive. I too had a miscarriage and then bleeding with the subsequent pregnancy but all was fine.
I also had light bleeding at around 6 weeks with this pg but now all is fine. so try not to worry

I had slight brown spotting too, and all was fine with pregnancy and baby. brown = not fresh blood. poss implantation bleeding. try not to stress too much!

I had brown spotting at six weeks 2 days when on hols in NY and ended up having internal scan at an ER there. We saw a heartbeat - flashing light on a little jellybean. Best sight ever.

Now 39+1 and all appears to be fine.

Fingers crossed for you...

Wavedancer - Firstly, congratulations on your pregnancy and secondly, I am sorry for your loss I know how anxious it makes you feel when you get into the happy state again By the way, they will think you are crazy by the way if you mention weeks based on OV, they did with me and actually, by 8 weeks, my beanie was measuring just a day behind LMP anyway.

When I had my early scan, I was 5+6. The purpose was to make sure the pregnancy wasn?t ectopic and was inter-uterine. This was because of medication I need to take that would have been dangerous to me if the pregnancy had been ectopic. At that scan we saw the gestational sac only on an external scan and a yolk inside it on an internal. It was too early for a heart beat and the sac measured about 7.2mm which was consistent with 5+2 (about right I thought based on Ov).

We had another at 8 weeks (they usually bring you back for a follow up scan when it is too soon for a heart beat as they cannot say the pregnancy is viable until they see one). At that scan we saw the baby (our gummy bear) itself with a head, body and buds for limbs. We also saw the heart beat. The baby was measuring 14mm ? so 7+6

What you will know after the scan, even if you don?t see a heart beat is that the baby is in the right place, how many there are (!) and if you are roughly measuring right for dates. All things that made me feel better. I hope whatever you see makes you feel much happier and more confident in this pregnancy keep us posted!

I had early scans with both my DD. DD1 scan at 7 wks due to previous MC. DD2 i had discharge and bleeding no pain just bleeding. Did a scan from wk 6 to 7 because i was so worried i was mc again, but doctors couldnt explain why i was bleeding. Now have a healthy 7 month old. I would go with you scan and drink loads of water it helps get a better look. Will be thinking of you.

Not sure if you've had your scan yet wavedancer.

I had an early scan dus to some bleeding (no pain) and previous miscarriages. I thought I was 6 weeks. They didn't see a heartbeat or fetal pole - jus the sac and yolk sac - but the sonographer was quite happy and said to see me again in 3 weeks (when I already had a scan booked). I was quite concerned as I knew I was at least 6 weeks but they put me down as 5+ weeks. When I did go back , we saw our wonderful little bean with a hb, and dated it at 9+3 - which means I would have been 6+3 at the original scan (which fits in with my dates much better). What I am trying to say, is ... if they don't see a heartbeat or not very much, then it's not all bad news. Except for the fact that I had some bleeding, I wouldn't personally go for a scan again before 8 weeks otherwise you end up in a limbo situation. Hope you do see your little one's heartbeat, but don't dispare if you don't as everything is so small at that stage that measurements aren't alwasy very accurate. Good Luck
P.S. now 24+2 with a very active strong little thing growing inside.

Hi
I had a scan at exactly 6 weeks and they dated me between 5 and 6 weeks. We could see a sac and a yolk but no embryo. Went back 2 weeks later to check progress and there was a little mini baby/ alien in there with a heart beating away, measuring exactly right for dates. They will probably have you back in a couple of weeks.
Hope all goes well today. x

Princesspowersparkle & heresfor2007, you don't know how much happier you just made me feel.

I went for the scan this morning and they detected a gestational sac and yolk sac, but no embryo. They dated me at less than 5 weeks, which does still worry me, as I am 100% sure of my dates and I am at least 6+2 today (they even had me down as 6+6 based on LMP, but I have 31-day cycles).

The consultant did not seem very positive, since I got my +ve HPT on 22 June whereas she was convinced I was only at 5 weeks.

I do feel as if I am about to miscarry. My uterus feels heavy, like it does before AF arrives, and my boobs no longer feel tender.

I don't know what to think really. I was told that at 6+2 there really should be a fetal pole and that m/c was very likely. I am holding onto a glimmer of hope, but it's very hard being in this limbo right now.
