Weight gain... how much is too much?

I’m 15 weeks, and gained half a stone. Was 8stone13lbs, now 9.6lbs Am I being too careless with food? At the start of my pregnancy eating was the only thing that stopped me feeling sick.
Just to be clear, I’m not fussed about the weight gain (been waiting for this pregnancy for a very long time) but don’t want to gain an unhealthy amount, especially if it’s not the norm xx
How much did you all gain in your trimesters?

Everybody is different, i gained 7 stone with dc4, he was 11.6 lbs and i had so much water retention. (Lost all baby weight by 4 months). This was very excessive but as my midwife said she had never known anyone get as large as me in pregnancy even though i didnt eat anymore. My twin sister however only gained 10lbs!

I’ve gained 3 stone (now 40 weeks), despite being underweight when I got pregnant it’s too much (although apparently I look great) my thighs are HUGE! Not worried about it though as I’ve not been doing any exercise (a mixture of illness and my sport not being safe) so I know it will all come off afterwards, it did with my first and I looked great but it took about 18 months (but I didn’t put any real effort into losing weight).

I gained 7stone with both pregnancies.

Lost the lot within a week just by sitting on the loo and peeing for 15 minutes at a time. I think it was all water weight with 1st.

2nd I am still trying to lose and he is doing his GCSEs next year

I'm almost 37 weeks and have gained 2st. Midwife said it was a normal amount. My baby is big according to growth scans so hopefully quite a lot of it will be baby, placenta, water and other gubbins.

Ahh this is interesting to read, thanks all for sharing. I’m only 13 weeks and have gained 1lb (that’ll be the carbs I was scoffing while feeling ill!) but I’m already overweight so very worried about getting bigger.

With my first I put on loads more than 5 stones and lost it within 5 months. I had to work really hard to lose it though. I still had 1 stone to lose to get back to pre pregnancy weight which I didn’t lose as I fell pregnant again

With my second I again put on loads which I didn’t lose. The pregnancy ended in a mc.

Now with my third at 14 weeks I only put on 1 kg so far. I am hoping to eat healthily this time so I don’t gain so much. I still have 20kg to lose to get to before 1st pregnancy.
I can’t exercise as I can feel the start of spd. Also had gestational diabetes in my first which am trying to avoid this time.

Lampert am also overweight so worried about getting bigger. It’s hard work to lose it afterwards for me; takes a huge amount of effort so am trying to do damage limitation this time.

You seem like you were pretty small to start, so I would say that sounds perfectly fine. I'm overweight (BMI of 29) and the healthy weight gain in pregnancy for me is 16 to 25 lbs, so I imagine it must be considerably more for you. I started at 15 stone and I've put on a stone at 28 weeks. With my first it was about 18lbs by the time she was born. I'd put on probably about 5lbs at 15 weeks, so I'd say that sounds pretty standard, especially given you're so much smaller.

@Botassur that’s interesting, GD is my big fear. My bmi is 27 at the moment but I don’t want to end up obese as I know I will find it reallllly hard to lose it afterwards! I also don’t want to feel I’ve put my baby at risk by being so fat so I’m determined to keep it under control!

That said I can’t wait to have a little bump as reassurance that it’s growing in there! I’m 13 weeks but nothing at all yet - no doubt it’s all hidden under my size 14 flubber.

Wahhhhh @AnUtterIdiot I want a normal non-B shaped bump 😂😂😂😂 but I guess as long as the baby is healthy it doesn’t matter!

I gained 2.5 stone in my pregnancy, probably around half a stone of that was during the first trimester when I was ravenously hungry all the time! Now baby is born the weight has come right off (stomach muscles will require some work though!).

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but how do women with high BMIs control their weight gain in pregnancy? I haven't been doing anything differently than usual but I have already gained 9 pounds at 21 weeks yet I keep reading about women with higher BMIs than me who have hardly gained anything! (My BMI was 23 at the start).

Gained 6 stone with my first :/ lost it like it was nothing though. Not all, but I was very small before so I don’t think it was healthy for me anyway. Second I gained about 3 stone and it fell off me the same way...: then I gained loads AFTER this! Lol. Can’t even blame my pregnancies for my size! I’ve lost weight so far this pregnancy, but I have a high BMI now so can’t be as careless with it

I'm 14 weeks and have gained 9lb already Shock
I'm starting to do 20mins walking on the treadmill every other day to try and stop me getting too heavy. I'm pretty active anyway as have a pony to look after and muck out every day but I've stopped riding and I think that's the main cause. I haven't put much weight on arms, legs etc but got quite a big bump already. I was 9st 7lb to start. I think it's steadying up a bit now...well at least i hope so!

25 weeks and I've gained 0.3kg or 11oz. Had a high BMI to begin with so I'm trying so hard to not add to it. Midwife at the fat women's pregnancy clinic still wasn't pleased. What do you want me to bloody do! 11oz is just a poo!!!!!!!

Gosh I put on about 2.5 stone on with my first but no wonder I was eating a big bar of chocolate every other day 🙊 no wonder when I went to my scans they said 'big baby' she was born 8lb 6oz altho I was 6 days over. This time round is totally different as not put on weight only 16 weeks and if anything I may have put on. Not Overly over weight but not at my ideal weight so whether that plays a part! 🤔. I do have awhile yet to go tho .Altho don't really eat much, no junk really.. Apart from my daily fix of ready salted/ Salt and Vingar crips, fizzy drinks and freezing cold water.

Your weight gain looks about perfect to me. :)

I had a high BMI when I got pregnant. Was REALLY careful in my first trimester and lost a stone. Now 32 weeks and have put it back on again! Mainly because I bought a house and was stress-eating! I'm hoping to get it back under control now and maintain at my current weight as near as possible.

Bear in mind that by 40 weeks, you'll have gained the weight of the baby, plus everything that goes with it (placenta, extra fluid, uterus, blood volume etc) - there's a good summary here (www.babycentre.co.uk/a554810/weight-gain-in-pregnancy), but excluding fat stores (which vary - women with lower BMIs need more, women with higher BMIs need less or even none) you're looking at around 18-19lbs in baby and associated things alone!

You can calculate your recommended weight gain by week here: www.babymed.com/tools/pregnancy-weight-gain-calculator-by-week

I find that I have days where I'm so hungry I feel sick, and days when I'm fine - I try to listen carefully to my body and eat when I need to, and not eat when I don't. It's easy to get into habits on the hungry days and carry them over to the non-hungry days, when it's not necessary.

If you continue to eat healthily and listen to your body, you'll be fine. :)

Those links are great, thanks ! I'm also struggling, I haven't put much on overall yet (13 weeks) but I feel enormous, and guilty that I feel worried about something so vain when I should just be happy that I'm pregnant. I've been on a diet since I was 19, so just "eating what I need " is an entirely foreign concept to me. I've been in a binge/restrict cycle for so long.

I was a size 14 pre-pregnancy and was told to gain a maximum of 2 stone - half a pound per week then 1lb per week in the 3rd trimester. Except Bump had a growth spurt and I gained 8lb in 4 weeks! So the midwife put me on a 2000 calorie per day diet. By the time I have the necessary meat, milk and vegetables there's literally no calories left for junk food!
