Pregnancy

Do I need to call the hospital?

35+3 weeks now, second pregnancy but didn't make it this far last time as DD was born at 35 weeks due to pre-eclampsia.
Feeling really short of breath, got a weird pins and needles type feeling in the bottom of my chest. Everything feels like an effort, even getting up to go to the toilet.
Anyone else have this? What is it? DH thinks I should ring assessment unit, but I'm not sure. We were only there Saturday for reduced movement, don't want them thinking I'm a hyperchondriac.

They will never think you're wasting their time - it's their job to care for you and safely deliver your baby. Call them Flowers

I've checked my own BP (they wanted me to self monitor instead of going to the midwife twice a week) and it's fine.

I'd get checked. Better safe than sorry. I'm not 100% but I think you can have pre-eclampsia without high blood pressure.

I would call them. If they think you're ok they won't get you to come in unnecessarily.

It's possible that the shortness of breath is just the baby restricting the amount of space your lungs have, and the heaviness is just the reality of late pregnancy with the strain it puts on your circulatory system. But it's better to be safe than sorry.

It really doesn't matter if they think you're a hypochondriac. In any case they won't think you are - they want you to have a healthy baby almost as much as you do and they know that erring on the side of caution is the best approach. In late pregnancy things are unlikely to go badly wrong but when they do it happens fast, so don't make your decisions based on potential social embarrassment.

Go get checked, I know it feels a bit embarrassing but you'd feel a lot worse if it turned out there was an issue and you'd stayed home! They honestly won't care, they're there all day seeing women who 9 times out of 10 are fine, that's their job. I had history of pregnancy complications so probably went to the day unit 30 times over the third trimester (the final time I went there was a problem and ds was born shortly after...) good luck!

True, I did have "normal" BP last time, but it was higher than it is now. BP now is 119/75. My pre pregnancy normal is 100/50. With pre-eclampsia last time it was around 135-140/80-90.

They won't think you're a hyperchondriac. Please call them. It's what MAU is for.

YES. When I was being monitored for pre-e and other issues as an inpatient, they regularly asked me about pain/sensation in that area (assuming you mean the bit above your bump/below your ribs). What is the worst potential downside of calling? And what is the worst potential downside of not calling? There's your answer.

Shortness of breath is also worrying - could be a pulmonary embolism if there is also pain as you breathe in, or any number of other things. Call!

I would suggest a&be as you need a medical assessment

ring, while your bp isn't high on most people's scale, it's significantly higher than your normal

So midwife sent me to A&E. Several hours later I'm back home with clexane injections and an appointment for a scan for suspected blood clot tomorrow!

Well I thought I was going for a scan to confirm or deny a blood clot today. Turns out all they wanted to do was more bloods, another ECG and then will ring me with an appointment for the VQ scan! Not impressed.
