Hi folks this might seem like a long winded thread but I need to say everything to make sure if possible my quesyions/concerns are answered.

Ok so 2 years ago I had my first glucose tolerance test and my results were deemed fine but only just therefore not treated as having diabetes. Anyway when ds1 was born he was 8.12lb which is ok in the 62nd centille which isn't bad considering went over by 8 days and ended up having an emergency c section. Anyway the ward was awful the staff although I appreciate they were short staffed and rushed they were neglectful rude unsympathetic and left alot of the ladies who had just had a c section without even a drink for 16 hours and didn't help at all when your baby needed a nappy change etc even though 30 min prior you were in a recovery room after your major operation! That's not the worst bit either!

So found out I'm pregnant again had my gtt last week and found out that hey had significantly reduced the limit of a healthy blood sugar level. Well my results came back better then last time but apparently one of my results are 0.3mmol higher then they should be therefore be if treated as diabetic even though baby at the mo IS's measuring in the 50th centille (30 weeks). Anyway I just wondered if any of you ladies who have had gestational diabetes wpuld be able to give me any advice on what to expect pre birth and after birth just so I know what to expect as having an elective section because I do not want to stay in there any longer then necessary! Thank you so much in advance sorry for rambling on! Appreciate any comments x

I has gestational diabetes and to be honest it was really well managed. I had regular weekly appointments and both the baby and I were really closely monitored.

There was talk of inducing me at 38 weeks which is normal for GD I understand but in the end DD arrived early at 35 weeks so it never happened.

As an added complication I also have Addison's disease so during labour I had to have a steroid IV as well as an insulin IV. I'm not sure which caused it (or if it's because she was early) but the day after she was born DD was whisked off to SCBU for 10 days with low blood sugar.

Today she is a perfectly happy and healthy 6 month old.

Thank you so much kinsman so glad your little one is okay. It's just all new for me and abit unnerving as I had a midwife that I knew doctor etc and now everything has got to be changed. Did you stay for the 10 days in scbu or get discharged from the ward earlier xx

I had GD last time and this time (25 weeks currently) and had an emergency c-section, with an elective planned for this time. I had to test blood sugar for a few days after the birth. All was fine. DS's sugar was also tested for a few days. Unpleasant for him, and for me to watch, but all was fine. I'm planning another section this time, and early plans for that have been entirely unaffected by my diabetes. They've barely mentioned it as its under good control at the moment. I was discharged after two days. I felt it was too soon and will be trying to stay longer this time if I think it's necessary.

Thank you quesadillias! See I'm the opposite I'd much rather be at home if all is well due to the experience last time was horrible I was in 3 days last time 2 days on the ward 1 day in the scbu because my.son needed antibiotics couldn't wait to get out. Was told before gestational diabetes that you could be out in 24 hots after op but not sure now with being diagnosed. Dreading it lol x

It might depend on how long they want to test the baby's sugars for. Obviously you con do yourself at home, but I don't think I'd be comfortable doing it on a newborn. They did my DS for two days, so Maybe that was a factor in when they'd let us go. But they might decide how long on a case by case basis, I don't know. Hope you get to leave whenever is comfortable for you.

I'm going for a gestational diabetes test in a few weeks and I am expecting it to be positive after having a 10lb baby in a previous pregnancy and a baby born with low blood sugar.
Do they induce all pregnancies at 38 weeks if the mother has gestational diabetes?

quesadillas · 25/06/2015 13:42

I'm dreading the hospital too, but hoping for a private room this time (twins.) The ward was utter hell, so fingers crossed!

Superexcited, I was induced at 40 weeks as the diabetes was well controlled, no signs of big baby or anything. My hospital policy was to induce 37-40 weeks depending on how they thought the diabetes was affecting you.

Not sure hun I was gonna have an elective section at 39 weeks and the midwife said might have to be brought forward with gestational diabetes. Are you having growth scans? They give doctors a good opinion my son as said was 8.12 lbs so 62nd centille and this one is measuring 2.7lbs at 27 weeks which is just over 50th centille. I will say though that they have lowered the boundary massively amd will treat you as having it even if your blood is only the slightest bit over. Good luck hun xxx

I had gd in my last pg. I was induced at 36 weeks due to other circumstances.

I was kept in for three days (two nights) as DS was just below full term but also because they needed to check his blood sugars, which they did every day, but they always came back negative.

I was on the ward the whole time, not ideal really. wish I had a private room. the ladies on the ward were all very young had all had c-sections. and the lady next to me was such a whinge the whole time. the nurse opened all out curtains at one point so we could all get to know each other but nobody was chatty.

will probably be the same thing this time round. the only good thing about staying in so long is that we properly got breast feeding established.

Hi just wanted to say I'm in the same boat! Had an emergency cesarean last time, truly horrendous experience of staff,.ward and other patients throughout the entire thing and ended up discharging myself early because it was so bad
Have just this week discovered I have GD and started monitoring my bloods etc over the past two days. Am trying to get my head around the very medocalised approach to birth this brings
I had been planning a home birth so this is a big adjustment to make!
I hate the idea of an induction and a.cesarean, don't want either and am.starting to feel like they're inevitable! Not helpful..
Will be watching this thread with interest.

I had a cesarean before and unfortunately my recovery was not smooth - repeated infections, lost a litre of blood during the op and no one ever tested my iron levels and I was incredibly anaemic for a long time. But it was an emergency cesarean after 27 hour back to back labour with only gas and air and I was a complete wreck afterwards! A planned cesarean would be very different I think.

Fingers crossed baguette if i were you I'd avoid carbs a load of sugar and don't drink alot of milk a few days before it to save you having to go through this ridiculous things like this for 0.3mmole difference lol. Ovumahead i completely get you one as in labour for 5;days seriously hospital twice sent back with co fecking coda mol had a sweep cancelled inbetween and when I was admitted was 19 hours of non progressive labour then emergency c section didn't need the stress of the ward was just awful x
