Pregnancy

12 week scan worries (first timer)

Tomorrow I will finally be having my 12 week scan. This is my 1st pregnancy and I'm so nervous for the whole thing.

I've had a lack of typical pregnancy symptoms like morning sickness etc, I've really only had a bout of tiredness, sore boobies in the first few weeks and put on weight around my middle.

The 1st thing I'm worried about is that I'll have my scan and there won't be a baby in there. Is that normal to think that???

The 2nd thing is that in my 1st MW appt I was weighed and placed with a BMI higher than the healthy bracket. I've heard having a bigger tummy makes it harder to do the US scan. Is this true? I'm a size 16 (more 18 now) and do carry weight on my tummy, so I am a bit worried. My hospital letter said I should come to the scan with an empty bladder, but I've heard it's better to have a fuller bladder when you're a bit chubbier.

Are these typical worries?? Or am I being daft?!

Yes it's normal I am afraid. Very stressful. best of luck to you. If they have said empty bladder then follow that advice. If they decide they need you to have a fuller bladder they will give you a drink and ask you to wait for a bit longer.

Good luck

Hiya

Totally normal worries!! With my dd i barely had symptoms & didn't expect anything to be there at the 12 wk scan.some people are just lucky with symptoms, heartburn was bad later in the pregnancy so I defo suffered then . I hope the scan goes well :) re bladder I would do what the hospital letter says you never know they may have different scanning equipment.

Thanks Heels99, I keep telling my hubby my worries but he is just excited! Typical! I don't think I would feel as nervous if I felt more "pregnant"!

If you are worried about your weight, remember that eating for two actually only means eating the equivalent calories to one banana extra per day.
Having said that, I ate everything in sight for first trimester (twins). But after that appetitie normalised. And I never had morning sickness or any sickness so try not to worry about that. They will have had all sizes and shapes of people to scan!
Good luck. It is very nerve wracking.

Totally normal worries.

I felt exactly the same with both DDs. With DD1 I couldn't really believe I was pregnant and was going to have a healthy baby - but I did and she is now a super lovely 3yo.

Good luck tomorrow op Flowers.

I felt exactly the same. With a BMI of 29 my scans were perfectly clear! I then felt the same worries before my 20 week scan and again all was well. Also my early symptoms were a blocked nose at night and being slightly constipated - neither what are seen as 'warning signs' but Dr Google convinced me they were enough to do a test, so you may have symptoms you just don't realise are to do with pregnancy!

Heels99 I have been eating just a normal amount of food, maybe smaller portions as my appetite at teatime hasn't been huge. I've been drinking lots of water too. I don't know how anyone could "eat for two" as I just feel full a lot of the time.
I think I'm over worrying about my size, I'm not the size of a whale but I am carrying a bit more weight than some.

LittleGreyCatwithapinkcollar I think my BMI was 31. Talking of stuffed noses, I have permanently had one since before Christmas when I did my test!! You're right, I do think that everyone around me who have had babies tell me stories about their chronic morning sickness with heads down the loo throughout the day... I suppose I've been waiting for it to make an appearance.

As everyone has said, totally normal. I had almost no symptoms and having been extremely ill with DD1 I was VERY paranoid about something being wrong.

Of course it wasn't and I'm now in third trimester with DD2 and suffering every symptom going so don't worry, it will come Grin

As for scans, my BMI is 35 and I haven't had any problems (have had scans at various stages to check if placenta had moved) and it was never a issue.

Gemzybelle that's good to know, everything seemed like bad news in my first MW appt - higher risk of pregnancy diabetes from BMI, possible Anti D issues as I already knew my blood type was RH Neg, blah, blah! Hmm

Oh I had all that too. My consultant looked almost disappointed when my GTT came back as clear for diabetes he was so convinced Grin

I'm also Rh Neg and aside from a routine anti d injection at 28 weeks have had no issues Smile

I was genuinely surprised to see a baby at my first scan with ds and with my current pregnancy I took a pregnancy test the day before just to be sure!! I've never heard anyone struggle to get a good scan when only a little bit over weight so try not to worry too much.

Hi girls

First time paid for ICSI for us and last Monday (26th) got a BFP which I think I am still is disbelief about so maybe some of you can confirm this but today makes me 3 weeks pregnant (if you are counting from egg collection) but have read it is 14 days before egg collection you start counting from confused!

Anyway I have my first scan to check for a heartbeat (or heatbeats we had two put back!) on 19/2.

I do not know how I am going to last until then and then last until the 12 weeks. The worrying is never over! I fully expect there to be nothing there!

Glad to read I am not alone feeling worried, scared and daunted by it all!

Thanks NickyEds, fingers crossed tomorrow will give me and DH the same experience. Tonight calls for a warm bath and a face mask and maybe 1 ginger nut biccie. Wink

anroga I'm so happy for you and I hope time flies as quickly as it has for me! I did a test when I was 4-5 weeks and 12 weeks seemed a million miles away but it has just sneakily crept up on me!

Are you me? I also have my scan tomorrow,I have had some symptoms yet I'm terrified they'll be bad news tomorrow. This is actually my second baby yet with my first I was just excited. Good luck for tomorrow. Fingers crossed for both of us.

Until i saw my baby in there, I was worried about the exact same thing. I had to have a full bladder and I have no idea how I kept it in. Even the sonographer was impressed! Lol.
It was a relief as soon as it was on the screen

It's funny isn't it how different hospital want different levels of bladder fullness. I just thought they all had the same equipment, haha how naive I am!

I worried about the weight/scan thing too. I have a BMI of 33 and wear size 18 clothes but ALL my weight is on my tummy. There was no problem at all, at this stage the baby is really low down so they are more in your pelvic area anyway. Only difference might have been it hurt a little bit more when she pressed but it was insignificant really.

Good luck and enjoy it!!

Report
MissTwister · 03/02/2015 13:11

Oh and I was convinced it would be bad news. Literally about 90% convinced. I didn't even look at the screen until she said there was a heart beat! I'd also told my husband not to get excited until the sonographer said it was fine and he said he didn't know when he was allowed to be happy so kept looking at me nervously.....all was fine. And he was super excited at the jumping baby!

Report
LuceGoose85 · 03/02/2015 17:42

I went for my scan and it all went really well!! The baby was wriggling around so the sonographer was struggling to find a good angle for the measurements! Just need to wait for my blood results etc but a huge weight has been lifted off me and now I'm buzzing with excitement!! Thank you all for the support you gave me Smile Smile
