Early labour - help please!

I'm being induced today, got the pessary in at 7.30 and been having period pains since 2 which became regular contractions at around 4. Now every 3 mins and pretty painful. Managing with the tens for now.

But I was examined about two hours ago and was completely effaced but only 1-2cm dilated. This meant that dh had to go home as can't go to labour wars until 3-4cm.

I feel a bit awful to be honest. I can't believe I'm labouring alone and on a strange ward. I really want to stay in control and get through the next few hours when hopefully I can dilate a couple of cms but finding it hard going.

Please encourage me!!!

If contractions are strong then they will be doing something, hopefully he'll be able to come back soon. In the meantime can you have the lights nice and low to try to relax (!)? You're doing really well, try to stay hydrated and keep positive - every contraction is a step closer!

Could you have a bath to kill a bit of time until they let him some back?

Aww that sucks! I wish they'd sort this out, it is not very helpful to take away your support when you need it Angry.

You could either try and relax and get some sleep or do opposite and get walking or bouncing on a ball if you have one. How's your pain? If not too bad then could you distract yourself with tv or movie? I hope things get moving soon.

You can stay in control. Just try and relax and think about how your body is doing what it needs to be. The pain is your body working hard to help you deliver your baby. Also don't forget to try and sit upright, forward and open to help baby move into a good position.

Most of all don't forget your baby is coming! You get to meet your baby soon

Thanks everyone! I'm on a birth ball with the tens machine so trying to stay upright and mobile. I'm just worried that the pessary will stop working - or is it my own body doing the work by now? It's bloody painful whatever it is!

Not sure when to ask the midwife to examine me again, they don't seem so keen to. I was thinking in a couple of hours time if these contractions continue but I don't want to be disappointed.

I'd wait a while if you can. If you'd spontaneously gone into labour at home you wouldn't know how far along you were.

Quick update: I didn't dilate enough overnight so had a shot of pethidine to get a couple of hours sleep (hadn't slept the night before). Woke up still contracting so hopefully I've done enough so that they can break my waters this morning. Then they'll put the drip up I think - il probably go for an epidural at that stage.

This is so far away from my "birth plan"!! Hopefully baby in the next couple of days though Grin

You're doing really well! Do you know if you're having a boy or girl? Is this your first?

Glad you managed a little sleep, you are doing really well so just keep going! Keep moving/bouncing as much as you can and do what you need to do to keep yourself calm and (fairly) relaxed.
Cheering you on! Whats happening now may not have been on your birth plan but it won't be long now until you have your baby in your arms. Sending you Thanks Brew and Cake!!

Yes my first. Having a boy Smile.

I've dilated enough to have my waters broken later. Feel ridiculously excited about this!

Thanks for the encouragement everyone. X

Pinkbell123 · 18/02/2014 13:00

They're really busy so my waters haven't been broken yet but finally on labour ward so at least have my own room and some gas and air. Contractions are still coming strong so hopefully properly in labour now.
