Pregnancy

Anyone else got pregnant at, ahem, 45?

I can't quite believe it! Just found out today after wondering where my period had got to.

I know it's quite unusual, so just wondering if anyone else has been been through this?

Not me but many congratulations!

Huge congratulations :)

I did it at 40 and 43 - I'm now 50 but feel about 35 (25 in my head!) Didn't feel quite so good with the interrupted nights but hopefully they won't last long.

Enjoy your surprise :)

Well yes, but it was 44 (had DS2 at 45) and was very planned. :)

Congratulations!

It wasn't too bad, but it was a worse pregnancy than with DS1 (at 39/40) - more acid reflux starting much earlier (12w, just after the nausea went away); SPD this time around; polyhydramnios towards the end of the pg which allowed DS2 to swim around at his leisure and resulted in me having a very managed labour (cervical ripening, followed by ECV, followed by ARM with syntocin drip - not lovely) but I managed to get him out by myself.

Am quite a bit more tired this time around and having a few more problems with bf'ing, but that may not be age-related, more that DS2's tonguetie wasn't dealt with until he was 5wo so his latch isn't so great.

So long as you are relatively fit, and look after yourself a bit more than you would if you weren't pg, you should be fine. I'd also recommend taking pg supplements throughout, to help keep on good form. I started taking extra vit D halfway through as my vit D levels were checked and had dropped quite a lot, which can be bad for the baby.

Chances are you will be labelled a high risk pg, purely because of your age. You might then get consultant care; your hospital might have a high-risk midwife team (they might not, I'm in Australia, they did at my hospital). You may find you are more "managed" through your pg - I had to have 3 glucose tolerance tests, and was scanned far more than I had been with DS1 (again, might be to do with the difference between Aussie and UK systems though, DS1 was UK born). I did get swollen ankles this time around too, didn't with DS1 but luckily no VVs (phew!)

My darling wife became pregnant naturally at 44 and a bit (very wanted). Easy, healthy pregnancy. No issues at all, and tests came back as low risk for genetic problems. Phew!! Our daughter is 5 months now, and the joy of our lives. Be happy!

Thanks everyone. I already have DC aged 8 & 7, but I'm now with a new partner and although we've been careful, it obviously wasn't careful enough! I'm well aware that nothing may come of this pregnancy and that even if it does there may be challenges along the way, but we feel very happy and blessed for now. Smile

thumbwitch - thanks for the advice
feetheart - I had DS at 39 - so I kind of remember the nights!

My grandma got pregnant with my uncle at 47. At first she mistook it for the menopause!

He's now a hale and hearty 40-something himself.

I'm 43, VERY unexpected pregnancy (dc1 25 dc2 23 DGD 2!!! ) and didn't expect it to progress when i found out (i have some other minor health problems) now 25 weeks and all going really well. first 18 weeks were really hard, a lot harder than i remember from first two now feeling 10 years younger than before BFP. really looking forward to joining the geriatric new mum's club.

congratulations Thanks

FooFighter and rosiedays. Many congrats to you both! I hardly slept last night thinking about what this could mean to our lives. For one, my Mum will kill me! Shock. I expected to feel horrified when the BFP came up, but I just felt very happy and kind of 'calm'. Anyway, very early days so we shall see.

you should feel like a spring chicken compared to Halle Berry who's in the same condition at 46!
they called me geriatric at 37. The f&ckers.

EasterHoliday I've alway thought Halle B and I were very similar in many ways - this latest sychronicity has just confirmed it. Wink

stamping oh i get the 'my mum will kill me thing!!!' LOL at our age!!! I really was on emotional rollercoster, I struggled to be happy for a long time and i really did greive for the life i wouldn't have anymore. life involved lots of travel, scuba, nice hotels, and generaly being very selfish.
seeing the changes in DH (it's his first and he's 12 years younger than me) and realising how much he (quietly) wanted a child has really helped. (he's been amazingly supportive)
Little one is right now kicking away and with each kick i love her more. it took a while and a lot of soul searching but i'm so looking forward to doing it all again with the wisdom of age and a supportive partner.
I really wish you lots of luck. xx

rosie thanks for your message. I don't know how to feel either. I am very much in love with my DP and he is really happy about it, which I wasn't expecting. I keep swinging from panic about money and logistics (and abject fear of telling my parents (!)) to feeling that it's definitely what I want and feeling really excited and happy. I'm happy to hear that you are now in a good place with it all. It's very exciting. x

minky Huge congratulations! x

I had ds2 on Sunday aged 40. The midwife gave me a very firm talking to about contraception before I left (made me feel about 15). She said they get loads of 40+ women with natural conceptions and, unless we want another, to take the fertility crash post-37 with a pinch of salt as it is clearly meaningless at an individual level!

They'd had a 46 yr old in having her first a few days before - healthy baby, straightforward delivery. Good luck!

Gorjuss · 09/04/2013 12:13

My friend had her 5th at 47 and she's a brilliant mum.

Report
Thumbwitch · 09/04/2013 12:18

Apparently, and this is not necessarily scientifically proven, lots of women have a sudden fertility surge just prior to pre-menopause because the ovaries go for a "last chance" egg dump, which is why twins are quite common in the over 40s!
